Bell Jar Cake
    #26440078 - 01/18/20 11:34 AM (4 years, 11 days ago)

I didn't fell like dealing with small cakes and decided to use a bell jar. Why don't people use larger containers then the 1/2 pint jars?

1) I used the typical PF ratio with a few changes. 2 parts peat moss, 1 part oat/brown rice (1 cup oats, 2 cups rice), 1 part water.

2) 15 minutes in the microwave.

3) Inoculate with 12cc to decrease colonization time.

Not planning on using a fruiting chamber. I will take the lid off and enjoy what I get. If needed I will cover with a container to keep humidity high.

Bigger jars take forever and will stall out a lot

I think if that worked it would be a popular method by now. All those little jars are fiddly, but if you do it properly it gets you mushies and it's worth it. (Until you go to agar and grains!) PF tek works because of the small size which means it doesn't need shaking, and the mycelium has a chance to colonise the smaller amount of material before contaminants can dominate. It should also have a dry verm layer on top, and a good sealing lid with some kind of filter for gas exchange.

Microwaves can be pretty filthy inside. If you don't have a pressure cooker, steaming in a big pot might be a better option.

The bell jar might make a pretty fruiting chamber for small cakes or cakes spawned to bulk, but I don't think it will work for this.

defo pretty. inspired by big gulp grows i've seen and i love me mini bell jar grow.

this jar is from scented candle but know there is a coffee brand with similar jar (douwe egberts) i'm gonna target in future.

agar from 1st transfer (was impatient - so pretty clean MS myc) to grain to coir . removed plastic collar/grip around rim of jar's lid so that chamber sorta mimics glass petri dishes in terms of FAE mechanism. took top off when 1st fruits bigger than pins

tubs from same grain already contamed so anticipate same soon for jar but super pleased at how its turned out in circumstances. i think its a lovely little thing for amateur like me. wanna get 10+ to scatter around the house, give as presents and that!

oops, btw agree with previous posts for cake. but bell jars with loose lids are possibly good candidate containers for mini grows, maybe...
