It looks like it might have bacteria around there since it looks like it didn’t fully colonize.

I’ve had crazy dense side and bottom pins like that before and ended up fruiting them like big cakes.

They ended up alright but smelled funny and triched out after the flush.  It had a weird spicy fruit smell, kind of reminded me of cider. I had three tubs do this all with the same smell.

Good to know -- I figured as much -- think I should fruit it as is, or break it out into a SGFC?

Well the main reason I went with the hc was I had absolutely no pins on the surface so I had nothing to lose.

It looks like you’re gonna have a decent amount on that side though so it might be worth doing.

Is it just that side?

It’s funny in the first pic I posted the blue lines were from days before the pins showed up where the colonization had stalled out, so I traced it to see if it was moving.

Then it ended up being almost a perfect line of where the pins formed.

The conditions are better there than they are on the surface. I used to get side pinning like that, especially in shoeboxes. My substrate was either too wet or I didn’t distribute my spawn thoroughly. Can’t say for sure what’s happening with your grow. More info needed. Post surface pics too.

It's a shoe box with 100% coir. I definitely didn't distribute properly and left some quarter sized chunks of myc. Colonized very fast but I used like a 2:1 spawn to coir mix.  Top conditions are very moist. There are small beads of water on an all white surface but in a healthy way from what I can tell.. It's looked ready to pin for a week. I have mini pin patches like this on all sides.

Not mixing evenly shouldn’t matter, it might just take a little longer to colonize.

Are there surface pins?

Pack it around the edges a little more next time. Still be gentle dont want to pack it alot but it helps alot with sidepins in unlined monos. Also try not to move the shoeboxes or totes after spawning or the jostling can make microclimates for sidepins just like that.

Use a liner. The sub is shrinking and air is getting down there. Looks a little wet too.

The bottom of the tub is not flat either so when the sub shrinks it will raise up and get even more air down there.

Notice it's happening right where the tub is changing shape. 👍

Got a bigger mono/tote? Carefully flip it over and place it in that

Definately have to ride out the storm on this grow. Great idea for the time being.

Being new to the hobby I was always up in the air about liners until I seen PastyWhytes Ez dialed mono tek he posted 4 months ago...

Even the MycoGods use them!! LOL
