Is this mold?
    #26437305 - 01/16/20 06:40 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hi, spawned 1 BRF cake to shoebox on 1/8. Substrate was coir/verm, spawn to bulk ratio 1:5 (probably way to high, but I didn't read about that until right after I spawned it, of course). Cased with straight coir at time of spawning.

Are those thinner white tufts mold?  Or is that just more mycelium?

Thanks for your help!  First grow

It looks like extremely healthy mycelium and the clearer fuzzy stuff looks to me like cobweb mold, I’m not positive but get a closer pic.

Spray it with hydrogen peroxide and fan the living fuck out of it as often as you can and you may possibly be able to save your tub.

ah shite.  Thanks for your advice!  I'll put up a better pic soon.  Is the fanning because mold forms when it is too wet?  I thought things couldn't grow on straight coir?

I’ve seen loads of grows using straight coir, it literally makes no sense to me.
People say you need nutrition but I’ve seen 100% coir grows push out the same fat mushies and same flushes that horse poo does.
It makes no sense but whatever.
That being cobweb mold, like I said you can “try” to save it, as I have multiple times in the past by extra FAE and spraying with 3% hydrogen peroxide. BUT! Make sure it’s not completely soaked or it will catch green mold almost every time.
Or
You can put it outside in a shady area and cover with more coir and have a healthy outdoor grow, I’ve also saved tubs just by putting them outside and they put bigger mushrooms out anyways.
Outdoor is much better than indoor( just my opinion)

Thanks!  Yeah, it doesn't seem like anyone quite understands the straight coir grow phenomenon yet, at least as far as my research has shown.  I sprayed it down with 3% peroxide so we'll see.  I also flipped the lid on the shoebox and have it half off to get lots of air in there. Do you mean make sure it's not completely soaked with peroxide?  or water?
As far as putting it outside, it's winter here now, so I don't know if that is an option.  Would I leave it in the tub or take out the substrate, put it in the ground and then cover it with more coir?

Either or, too wet can be a problem. What are the temperatures where your at currently? Night and day.
And if the cobweb gets too bad then you have no choice. I dig a hole the width length and maybe a half inch deeper than the height of your cake, put wet cardboard on the bottom, then place the cake in the hole, cover on the sides and top with coir maybe a half inch.
BUT I live in Florida so much conditions are different than yours.
Much easier for myself

Here is the same shoebox again after I sprayed it down with peroxide:

Indoor temps or outdoor temps?  Outdoor is 25-35f at night, 35-45f during the day.  House is set to 67f but I have an extra space heater going in my growroom.

I'm having trouble understanding what the proper moisture level is supposed to be during the tub consolidation period. There is some condensation around the sides of the tub, and the cake has started separating from the walls.  What do I do about the casing layer? Does it look moist enough?  I am using the unmodified shoebox tek.

From the looks of it your cake looks just fine. Get a macro shot if you still have fuzzy cobweb looking stuff.
It’s separating from the walls because the mycelium has colonized and tightened all the substrate together.(at least that’s always been my assumption)
That’s a great thing, it means your cake is close to ready once it starts pulling away from the walls.
And I highly doubt any cubensis would survive your outdoor temps.
Your cake looks good.

If thats cobweb your fae must be really low.

Yeah, I think I had the lid on for too long during the colonization period with a substrate that was too wet :/

Close to ready for pinning?  I have already had the cake in my understanding of fruiting conditions, but nothing has been happening.  Also, I put a layer of straight coir on top after that last photo as a casing. Starting to wonder if that was a bad idea. Good news is, the mold seems to be under control.

Yeah from the picture it seems like it is gone, good FAE probably took care of it along with the assistance of the hydrogen peroxide.
And yes when it starts to seem like the cake is Shrinking in size is when I put it into fruiting conditions. Then depending on what strain I’m growing, it will start to pin in 1 - 2 weeks.
Be patient it will happen.

Hey sorry it took so long.  Have already gotten plenty of shrooms across a few containers.  Ashamed that I ever thought nothing was going to happen  Basically, I turned a shoebox around one day and saw these bad boys growing from the side so I birthed the cake and put it in a bigger chamber.  Since then it has been non-stop harvest.  The only issue I'm dealing with now is very low potency, but that's a topic for another forum.  Thanks again for all of your help!
