Humidity problems in SFGC
    #26436568 - 01/16/20 10:46 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I let most of the cakes pin in my 1/2 pint jars pin before birthing. I’ve have had 11 cakes in a SGFC for a week and only have one fruit that matured.  Some of the other pins grew a little on the other cakes, but have stopped the last couple days.

This is a basement grow with a dry climate. I have the SFGC on a shelf about 4 feet away. Today I touched the perlite and it’s bone dry. Today I harvested matured fruit and I had a little difficulty cutting through because it was so dry.

I have 2 questions. Should I redunk my cakes and if so, how long? A few cakes have some fruits that are about 1.5 long.

I’m thinking about ditching my SGFC and rerinse the perlite to use in a monotub instead. Any other suggestions? I’ve seen this problem can be common and many people seemed to have success with this solution.

I appreciate the help!  P.s Something is wrong with my phone and I can’t upload pics!

Yeah I’m going to do a bulk mono grow next time. I just rerinsed my perlite and put it and my cakes into a unmodified monotub to see if conditions improve. I don’t think the cakes seem super dry, they have a pretty good weight to them, but the mushroom stripes are blue. From what I read that can be a consequence of lack of humidity in the SGFC.

Also can fruits with blue stipes recover in proper humidity?

Basements are usually cold. Whats the ambient temp down there? This could be contributing to slow fruiting.  Btw, perlite is not at all useful in a mono tub setup except for making a mess. Imo it would be best finish with what you got, and then throw that sgfc in trash when the project is done.

Dial in your growing conditions, and the fruitd will come. Temps should be at least 68F. The perlite seems dry, well rehydrate it. Cakes seem dry, give them a mist. Did you setup your sgfc correctly? Post some pics.

It gets down to 60 or a little less at night. That’s why I have the wall heater on. Temps range from 65-75 in the SGFC with the heater on. I mist and fan constantly and the perlite’s still bone dry.

I followed the SGFC tek. Most cakes were already pinning when birthed. The stipes on them are blue... my phone is finicky so I’ll try to upload pics

I wonder if it’s too late to break them up into coir.

Good luck man, I only did one round of cakes just to get the experience and hated it.

Like 6 weeks for this

Wbs to coir shoeboxes is so much easier.

Oh my bad. Didn’t see the WBS to coir tek. I think I may try that next

The SFF shoebox link in my signature is pretty set and forget. Hard to make a ton of mistakes if you make sure surface conditions are nice.

Just make a mono, line the bottom with wet perlite, place cakes in mono. I just recently did this exact thing with a mini mono done like patsy's ez dialed mono, except I put a shoebox inside instead of cakes.

The moisture from the perlite will not evaporate without holes on the bottom at the very least.

Well it worked just fine, as you can see. I don't see how it's any different from putting a wet towel or soaked coir in the bottom of an unmodified tub.

SGFC' are finicky ime and I hate them.

Edit*

This is the same tub on it's 5th flush:

Trying to run it into the ground but it just keeps going.

Id recommend adding another bag of perlite and trim those foil "plates" down to a small circle. Try to leave the perlite as open to the air as possible.

What worked was having that mino dialed in correctly. The perlite contributed 0% to your success. Nice shoebox!

I fucking hate sgfc's too! What a pain in the ass they are.

Ok good to know, because fuck perlite as well lol.

However I have confidence that the perlite is contributing. If there is enough airflow to cause evaporation on the sub then there should be evaporation on the perlite as well. This is just common sense imo.

The same idea is employed in this humidity chamber except this tub has holes.
