Looks like A. Muscaria to me!

I could be 100% mistaken but I don't think there are any look-alikes for Fly Agaric.
As always wait for TI to chime in!

I'd say absolutely! If there is that one there are probably more, especially if it's a large grove of pine.

Great shot!  I've done so much mushroom hunting lately that I keep thinking I'm going to spot a healthy A. muscaria around the next bend.  Looks like I'd better take a break from redwoods and fir and look for pine?

Thanks all!

I've also been hunting non-stop but coming up empty handed.  I pretty much lost hope, then I find this about 10 ft off a path whilst barely looking.  Definitely a morale boost.

It was under a pine tree and growing on a piece of dead wood.  I hear they like birch trees as well.  Going to head back and see if there's more!

In the bay area I tend to find them extensively under pine. Saw some monster specimen from the car while driving down 280 the other week.

Regardless, wait for a Trusted Identifier. I've never found one growing out of dead wood

Not sure if it was growing directly on wood or just near decaying wood...but will certainly wait for an ID.  It definitely wasn't growing out of wood in the way that an oyster does.

Yeah, I've only found them associated with pines, both in the bay area and in GA.

They are mycorrhizal with pinus or possibly coniferous species in general, but I think it is Pinus.

Pinus radiata in this case - it's the most common pine in the bay area.  Further north it's replaced by Pinus muricata, a two needle pine.  Both trees have lots of Amanita muscaria subsp. flavivolvata and Boletus edulis var. grandedulis.
