I was at Grateful Dead Night balancing my handmade guitar upside-down on the tip of my finger and my "friend" knocked me on purpose.

Didn’t they do a series of final concerts a few years ago? They milked a fortune out of fans thinking it was the last chance. Now they’re touring again?
That’s kinda a scam

This is exactly what I imagine happens to and near deadheads. I met a lot in Colorado and it never ceased to amaze me how they blamed other people for getting themselves in bizarre situations. "So I was candy flipping at this massive venue and some guy handed me an 8th of mushrooms so I said Fuck It and ate them all. Then I couldn't find my friends and I ended up locking myself in a bathroom for 2 hours. After I started coming down I finally ran into my friends, drunk off their asses, and I was like Yo guys what the fuck, I was losing my shit and you bailed on me?! They said they were sorry but fuck those guys."

How is this like me coming home from and open mic and maybe being a bit cocky and balencing my $3000 guitar from the tip of my finger and my friend being a dick compare to that? What I did takes skill.

I want to be able to balance a guitar from the tip of my finger, toss it in the air flip it, catch it and go into a song.
I've only tried that with fucking toys.
I almost did it one time on Venice Beach and this guy behind me got really mad cause he thought I was throwing the guitar at him.

I think it's a toss and step. You toss up with the right curve and step back out of the way as it comes down.
I think I have it worked out aside from the power to get it up and the wrist flick to turn it.
I should be practicing, there is this POS toy guitar outside that got rained o. I can use.

Not at all. It was the last shows as "The Dead" and the last time all the remaining members would share the same stage. They never said they would stop playing music. The fans don't feel ripped off and we would be ecstatic if they did a come back show.
Chicago that weekend was amazing. Probably the happiest Chicago has ever been. Tye Dye as far as the eye could see. They had a Grateful Dead art exhibit in the Field Museum that weekend and when I went to go see it I noticed that my GD art was on display . I stood in front of it for an hour and told everybody it was mine!
That was when I met Sheekle in person too. He came and slept at my hotel for a night.

Here is my favorite
Mountains of the moon>Duprees Diamond Blues>Dark Star
love Cant Come Down too.
They say I've begun to lose my grip My hold on reality is starting to slip They tell me to get off this trip
(I had shit people around me who did not understand what I was going through and almost got taken to a mental institution. "baker acted")
They say that it's like a sinking ship Life's sweet wine's too warm to sip And if I drink I'll surely flip I just say as I take a nip
I spent a night out of my mind walking a country road barefoot talking to the moon and the earth and the sky watching cloud faces and the moon changing shape in response. All I could get my ipod to play was cant come down and east infection by Gogol Bordello.
Started having "memories" of a terrible event that happened in 98 when that song came out and I was just 4 years old. Memories of playing in the backyard with my family and then people started turning into monsters and i was in the bushes with my little brother protecting him. Woke up the next day as a kid with my neck turned all the way to the side inside of some cabinets.
Also of be ing taken to Mars and trained by the Amarzonians (martian amazons)
Man i could just keep going. Ive been working on writing it all out as a journal chronologically but it is kind of hard to remember the progression of events. Started at the gorge in june of last year.

How do you not know their music? Do you not like music or do you have bad taste in music? What about "Casey Jones" or "Touch of Grey"? Do you know of and like those songs? What about some live emotional "Stella Blue"? Oh man, I could go on and on.
One of the best bands ever and IMO the best band ever. I honestly feel really bad that you have been living this long without the Dead in your life. For a while I thought they were just OK then one day it clicked and everything fell into place. I felt the music, emotions, and energy and realized that I was listening to music that will never die.
At first I didn't really get the improvisation and long 20 minute songs and now I live for that. I like when they're playing a song for so long that I forget which song they're playing and then they start another song in the middle of the first song and then finish it like 2 sets later. Even after all the members are gone and even after the current cover bands are gone their music and culture will still be here and still be talked about. They made the world a better place and continue to do so! Long live the music!

Just not really into that jam band scene or sound 🤷♂️

It often sounds incoherent or poorly fleshed out. I could never understand the appeal. I tried high as balls and it made even less sense.

When you improvise live music on the spot they can't all be zinger's. Some shows are better than others for that reason and also because they aren't perfect musicians and by that I mean they aren't like a "pop star" that plays the same song in the same way 1000's of times. When you do that you can make "crisp" music.
The Dead make "loose" music. When you see the Dead you get a new show every night, even if they play the same setlist, it would be an entirely different show. That is part of the appeal and the other part is enjoying the shows with a crowd of like-minded people. The crowds, the lot, and the scene is as much a part of the show as the music is.
I'm not sure what you mean by makes sense? The lyrics are great and timeless. The music sounds great and gets the crowds going. They had a wall of sound and are responsible for turning on more people to LSD and shrooms than anyone, including all of the Darkweb. They're a cultural phenomenon. Also, the Grateful Dead was a touring band that played almost 3,000 shows and was always meant to be listened to live. They are not a studio band.
If you ever decide to give them another chance then go to a live show with on open mind for fun and musical exploration. If you can't make a live show watch a whole concert online.

Made sense as "why is this so big." I get what you're saying with the music, overproduction has killed many band's careers, especially with punk and rock. Like Page's purposeful mistakes, but those mistakes are supposed to be there. To jam is an experiential thing, you gotta be there in the moment. It's almost like vicarious enjoyment. It's just not my thing.

That’s kinda a scam
I didn't get to Chicago, but I got to see the rainbow at Santa Clara.

That must have been pretty magical! I love when the music just happens to go along with the weather. I remember once when the Trey Pistachio Band was playing a set at Summercamp and there was a thunderstorm going on. The beat of the song was going with the wind. Like when the wind picked up, so did the music and at the same time there were tents and canopies flying through the air. Then the lightning started striking at the same time the drums were hitting hard, on beat with it all.
I need to see more Dead soon. I think Phil is going to start doing free shows soon and then DSO is coming to town. Wonder if there are still tickets available

Sui I went to the Santa Clara shows. I remember the plane trying to make a peace sign and failing utterly, all the roses wrapped into the grating with pictures of pigpen, brent, and jerry. The cops in there damn helicopters telling us to leave.
also the viola lee blues and the alligator I was offered some acid after the second night (seems to be a recurring theme for me, not once have I tripped in a show, feels like some vast conspiracy to only have acid become available to me after the shows, has happened many times now. no one wondering around saying acid, im just complaining now. Makes me feel like there is something wrong with me) witch I took since i had not been able to get any before either of the shows. Then I smoked a bowl of opium a friend offered me and passed out on the side of my van. I woke up short of breath and feeling awful like i was dying, no visuals or dilated pupils, with cops 15 feet from me yelling at everyone with bull speakers to disperse. I saw all the heads passed out on the grass not waking up. Because i felt so physically bad i was concerned that there was something wrong with the opium and all these people were dead.
Of course they werent, and I ended up being ok.

There was acid everywhere. I gave away a tenstrip and a free ticket to this couple that needed one. I was getting miricles to try to get better seats. there were so many free tickets around. I got prolly 5 miricles holding up this huge piece of quartz. O did a whole circuit of the stadium and blessed it balancing that piece of quartz in the palm of my hand before the show.

Free tickets were to be had, My family didnt have to pay for either night, even got a parking pass for the first night free. Second night my dad wanted me to just barge through security in my brown ford van witch did not work. maybe back in the 90s when people were tearing fences down. I dont really like being apart of that.
Something about me i think people see and decide not to offer any around me. I feel Like i just get a glance and then they look away. I have pretty good hearing and pay attention to whats around me but thats just how its been in my experience.
Im frustrated and fed up with it, it became an obsession of mine to trip in the show and dance with everybody, the more it eludes me the worse it is.
Given up on the shows now. I think I might be supposed to travel alone, away from the chaotic energy of the masses.

The trick is to be nice and look people in the eye. Stand tall too. Also offering people a beer, lemonade, or shrooms can help get the ball rolling. The easiest way to get doses at a Dead show is to just ask 1 or 2 people your age. Most people at shows are holding.
I didn't get offered any doses at Chicago, but wasn't really looking either. It was definitely there if I wanted it. I did find a bunch of drugs and stuff when leaving the last night/morning. That was awesome!!!

A buddy gave me an old tie dyed Grateful Dead tshirt when I was like 13 years old. Super cool shirt with bears sitting in tea cups on the front and a dragon on the back.
The front said Grateful Dead and the back kind of puzzled me. It said Scarlet Fire. I wasn't familiar with the dead at the time but thought it was a really cool shirt and I wore it all the time. Until there was no collar and all the hems were gone and was riddled with holes and faded. Eventually I stopped wearing it but kept it in a box for years.
Fast forward 15 years and I'm working the harvest at a weed farm in CA and one of the owners shows up for the full moon in October and doses pretty much everyone on the farm. I was one of the last to get dosed and didn't realize what was happening. I walked up to where everyone was gathered around the campfire and my buddy tells me to hold out my hand. I was like, ok, and held it out palm up like to receive something. Didn't realize it was supposed to be a back of the hand liquid drop thing... so the owner smiled and gave me a puddle that was enough to slosh out of my hand a little on it's way to my mouth.
Fuck.
Anyway, spare you the tripping balls details.... but someone blasted a Grateful Dead set over and over all night long from his pickup truck stereo. It rang loud and clear through those Sierra Nevada hilltops and I could hear it perfectly from anywhere I walked through the woods that night. It was incredible. I had never heard anything like it. Probably the 3 or 4th go round of this set on repeat, I'm starting to get some lyrics. Scarlet Begonias is playing. What a great song! But wait... it doesn't end, but kind of... just continues into another song... (didn't know about the jam at this point). This song is Fire on the Mountain. Another great song! As I'm sitting there enjoying the tunes and tripping balls and watching the full moon, it hits me.
Scarlet Fire...
Scarlet Begonias into Fire on the Mountain...
Holy shit! That's what the tshirt is referring to!
Felt like a weird personal prophecy coming true or some shit.
I love the stories in their music. So good.
Thanks for starting a Dead thread!

The dead does something to me that no other musician has accomplished. The chills, the tears, all of it. Friend of devil was the song on repeat during my First ever experience with the sacred alkaloid (Psilocin) and something has been rocking my brain ever since.
I lit out from Reno, I was trailed by 20 hounds. My mastiff just had 20 puppies (only 13 lived but she birthed 20 hounds.)

Great story man.. I’ve got many a good memory from meeting dead head’s just out and about, because we recognize each other. Or, shows, lot parties ha
It’s not over. It’s Phil!s 80th birthday and he’s out playing celebrating the music. It’s also their 50year anniversary I think? John Mayer is killing it in Dead & Company

I was probably at this show
Also met Blue Lotus's guitarist a few times, he was childhood friends with an old friend of mine. They were even in a band together for a bit I believe.
Wish Blacksheep still happened, I also knew the people who threw it. Some old hippie friends of my family.

They got no love for San Fran this touring season. I might get some DSO tickets to hold me over until I can see them again.
Is Dark Star the best Grateful Dead Cover band? I've seen quite a few that were amazing and I think they are the best. I have even heard a few people say that they are better than the Dead.
Does anyone have a favorite Grateful Dead Cover Band?

Just found this thread, bring back the dead!
Is there communities of dead heads around the world people know of? It would be so cool to be able to organize 'bush doof' style events with the dead as the house band Like minded people bring good vibes

I went to a Golden Gate Wingmen concert at Phil Lesh's bar the other day. It was better than most local Dead tribute bands, but was nothing like DSO or Dead n Co. It seemed like guys that just got together to play and didn't really know each other well enough to do good sounding improvised jams or maybe they just had an off night. They did do a eally nice "Ramble on Rose."
The show started off by Phil Lesh ripping me off for $5. Then I got a Makers Mark and Sprite for $8. Next I got a Makers Mark neat and they charged me over $10.
Besides that I met some nice people, heard good tunes, and would do it all again. This time I would yell out requests for better songs and bring my flask with me.

I'd Take GGW over D&c any day. Prefer it over regular ole Dead personally. Was gifted a ticket to see em off Shroomery during their first tour, started recording and streaming shows soon after. Listened to both those shows a couple times now and loved em. That band changed my life ~ about to hit 3 years without a drink after an experience listening to em (link is in signature if anyone wants to give it a listen) When they play together, they form a musical entity. Perhaps it was you who had an off night after Mr. Lesh gave you his famous shakedown
First time I've ever heard anything negative about em.

Heck Yeah!!! That Phil Lesh Quintet looks fantastic too!
Interlocken was one of the best festivals I have ever been to. The last time I went was in 2015. I would love to go again, but now I live on the West Coast so it would be hard to travel there with camping gear. You'll have a blast for sure. Enjoy it to the MAX!!!
My only complaint was the hot hot heat. Next time I would try to bring some kind of AC or maybe just a giant block of ice in front of a fan blowing on me during the day.

I had a last minute change of heart with lock’n festival. It’s just out of my price range. I decided to ride my motorcycle to Saratoga NY from VA to hit the rye bread festival. Going solo the wife has been informed and she’s not too pleased but the chance to party with some cool Shroomerites is calling me.
7 hour motorcycle ride through NY? Fuck me

Dude, I was just about to post this. This is my absolute favorite version of Mountains of the Moon and the song that got me into the Grateful Dead! There is something so poetic and mystical about this version. Most people I talk to who claim to be huge deadheads don't even know what song I'm talking about, let alone what version. Right on!

I spent my entire life trying to own a restaurant.... Trying to own someone elses restaurant.... Now I live in a trailer with 3 kids 3 cats and 1 wife... Ive given up the life goals to take better care of the little boogers. Ive traded 40 hours a week for 120 miles a day of driving to therapy and back. 3 hours 2 days a week of dance lessons. Some times it feels like its worth it. Sometimes it feels like giving up on life. Some times I tell the truth... Sometimes I lie.... I almost never take Casey Jane's name in vane. I've only done cocaine once in my life in 2009. It was my 18th birthday. I still will never take Casey Jane's name in vane. Its 1:03 am. I'm pitch drunk. I'm typing nonsense into an old thread about favorite songs. Maybe the songs aren't dead. Maybe they are just grateful to have ever been sung. I love you. Like you love you. Rest of you too. Even the ones that aren't the twos. Know what i mean? I sure don't. God speed.

Please DO NOT give up on your dreams. This one is completely attainable. Just start small and invest any money you make back into your business. Here is an example of how I would do it. Get a large barrel smoker and start selling ribs, tri-tip sandwich, and brisket to neighbors on the weekends. Include the kids for cheap labor and extra tips! Maybe put it on a trailer and sell at the beach or parks, maybe even at Homedepot. Give good deals, be extra nice, and have them to tell their friends. That word of mouth will get you more customers and will also give you a customer base. Next get a food truck, and then work into a restaurant if you still want more.
If you smoke it, they will come!
I know a few people who opened restaurants and this is how they did it. We also have a popular thing in my area called a pop-up restaurant, that could help you. What kind of restaurant do you want?
Back on topic. I can't get the song Good Lovin out of my head. Not a bad song to have on repeat. It could be that Macarena or some shit. Someone told me of a local Dead show on Wednesdays near me. I think I need a dose of the Dead. Might go in a couple days if I still have the bug, and the energy,

I'm the daughter of Deadheads, my daddy has deadbears circling his arm.
I'm the girl with rings on her fingers & bells on her shoes, obviously into the blues, Scarlet Begonias tucked into my curls, certainly not like other girls. I'd only turn you over to the feds if you did something equally as fucked up to me, tho.
Serious joke played on me by the world never allowing me to be at one of their shows, I had their 1972 Veneta, OR show on DVD, I'd watch that beauty on repeat, even though there was a man swinging his dick above the stage for most of the show...

that clip is ingrained into my head. Cannot unsee. The last time I saw all the surviving members together was at Rothbury 2009. Not a great show by them, but then again it’s never been the same since Jerry died & none of the post-Jerry shows I caught were all that great tbh. Lacked the magic for sure. I’m also a bit too young to have caught them before he died, so it was worth it for the experience. But anyway, I’d eaten a bunch of paper, and was also dope sick at the time so I got restless & wandered from the shroomery crew trying to work out the restlessness. Saw a group of young girls in hippie garb looking shocked & amused. They looked at me, looked away, then back at me, then away to the same place. I followed their gaze & saw a couple giant, dreadlocked, bearded & overall hairy hippie dudes hula hooping butt naked. Dicks helicoptering around & all.

Grateful to see a Dead post in the pub. That was one of the reasons I recall finally signing up years ago. They always hold a special place in my memory. I have a four month old, and haven't gotten to any live music in nearly a year. I need it.

Dead N Company is streaming a professionally shot concert every Saturday for free on Nugs.net. Every Sunday they are doing a free Widespread Concert and I'm pretty sure they are doing a free show everyday while the virus is happening.
I'll put up a link for a reminder tomorrow!
Enjoy the shows!!!

Funny...I've been into mostly electronic music and bass music for the past 10 years or so.
...but as of the past 2 to 3 years or so I've been getting way deep into rock & funk & jazz & blues....and in particular the Grateful Dead , for the first time in my life lol .
I had been familiar with the GD for a long while, and the history of the pranksters & acid tests and that "scene" from back then...but all I heard from them was their studio stuff years ago and I just never really vibed with or got into it. Several of my friends have been into the dead for a long while, it just never rubbed off on me and I never really listened to a recording of them play live and jam out in full glory lol.
Well in a very stereotypical/cliche' manner lol, one night while high on LSD during a friends birthday a few years ago we listened to a live recording from one of their shows sometime in the 70s...and needless to say, I fell in love lol.
Ever since that night I've been listening to them at least once or a few times a week lol, only live recordings...and I've been diving into and exploring a lot of music from the 60s & 70s, lots of rock & jazz/fusion & blues. I listen to all sorts of different music but every few years I go through a phase/change in what I mostly listen to, and I've been going through that lately.
Sounds crazy...but I'm just now discovering how immense the music of the 60s & 70s was. Gosh dang, as far as music goes what a time to be alive that must have been.
This past week I just listened to JRAD for the first time, and fuckin' eh' ! In some other thread I saw Dark_Star mention something about Joe Russo/JRAD, and as soon as I read that name I remembered one of my friends who's into the dead was telling me about JRAD a while back one night and I realized I never checked them out...Well I just did last week right after I read that post by Dark_Star and dang!...They nail the GD so nicely along with having a bit of their own style,....but they rock, they're right on point. I dig em' A LOT!...TBH I dig JRAD a lot more so than the little that I've heard from Dead & Co....JRAD instantly became one of my favorite bands this past week lol. Sooo so good!...They definitely have a vibe and energy to em' .
Listening to JRAD right now actually.
Just saw JRAD is supposed to headline the "High Sierra" festival this year, damn good looking line up in general....but I am pretty sure events will still be canceled in July with the virus going around. I don't have the $ to make it anyways even if it does still happen lol.
But yea...the GD has had me soaring at such high & far out places and has given me such gnarly "feelings" and has tickled my brain & body in ways that electronic/bass music never got close to bringing me to lol. I still enjoy raving/dancing with bass music and a large proper sound system, I dig all sorts of electronic music, but live music has a warmth & soul to it that just isn't there with anything electronic.

JRAD is great.
I’m actually re-watching the dead and co shows from this summer at the gorge at moment. Got puddled upon entry to the pit so it is fun to watch it just drunk and stoned!
I know not everyone is a dead and co fan, and nothing will ever match the original lineups highest of highs. But Mayer is really fucking good and enjoys himself while playing the music. That’s all you can ask for, good music and good vibes.

I've never knowingly listened to a GD song all the way through. When I've clicked on 'tube' links on other threads I've turned them off within a minute. I guess you just got to be their to appreciate it.
Imagine my surprise when I recently discovered that Garcia, from said "GD" played on one of my favourite albums from the 70's.
A track I still often listen to to this day.

Hope this is alright for this thread lol....If not I'll just stick to original GD stuff.
One of my favorite JRAD shows that I've heard so far. The part with the violinist during the 2nd set is gnarly, soaring!....I'm listening to this show again at the moment.

Hi,
Long time head, second time caller. I know in advance that some people will be highly offended by this post, but..., the Furthur shows hot. Yeah, you gotta poke around a bit to find times when Bobby wasn't throwing the new guy curveballs - but when they are gelling, they be gelling. Plus, sound quality. The free soundboards are top notch. After spoiling myself on dead and company flac, and furthur soundboards, I can hardly stand to listen to the muffled sound of 1970 (some dick's picks I just played). It's a shame really, I thought nothing would ever tickle my funny bone like Jerry, but the show goes on...and the sound quality has improved.
To be fair, maybe I'm not looking in the right places for the highest quality recordings...but for now, I find myself attracted to this iteration.

Thanks for the Further links. My first live Dead related show was Further at the SB Bowl. Good times. Bummed to not be able to meet up for shows this summer but hopefully music is back on the menu by next spring.

A page or a few back I mention a similar story.
I had listened to the GD a handful of times like 10 to 15 years ago when ever a friend was listening to them (albums tho, not live recordings of shows) and I know some of their songs I heard when I was a child....
....I just never really got into them tho. I never understood the appeal and following the band has, their sound/vibe never "got into me". Tho I've always been quite familiar with them and their history and the acid test days and the pranksters and that whole scene & era, I just never got into their music until somewhat recently. I've been into mostly electronic music for the past 10+ years, but then one day 2 or 3 years ago, while flying high, I listened to an actual full live show of theirs all the way through from beginning to end (I forget what show, but it was from the early 70s) and I fell in love!
Since then I've gone down a rabbit hole of rock/blues/jazz from the 60s & 70s....And jeeeeez! . So much great music from back around then!
I'm still into & enjoy many different genres of electronic music but I've been listening to rock/blues/jazz more than anything the past couple years....I listen to a show from the GD and/or JRAD at least once to twice a week. Soul food .

I haven't been listening to much music lately, but when I do listen to music I listen to the Dead almost everyday.
I'm dying for a Grateful Dead concert lately. I need the live music to heal soul. This is a time that I wish I was rich so I could pay the dudes to get together and perform a live show just for me.
I'm going to be crying tears of joy next time I'm rocking out with my Dead family at a live show. It's been waaaaay to long.

I'm a 60 year old who has never been into the 'Dead'. Even though I have worked as a sound man for 'Dead' cover bands (30 years ago?). But listening to the above audio posts, has me appreciating the genius that crafted the music. I was probably (mostly) affected in a negative way by a lot of the poor recording quality of the 'tapes' I heard of the live performances back in those days. I now appreciate what was going on musically, even though I always supported what was going on culturally because of the G Dead.
It makes me happy to see the Dead legacy continuing on into the 20's+. Peace friends...

Sup fam, have been reconnecting with the Dead much lately. Cannot get enough.
It's interesting to me, how my taste has evolved over the years, just as the groups sound changed.
Alas, always has, always will be in top 3. Here's my fav Alligator yet-
I'm in the minority, I believe. Never liked the Godchauxeras(after mulling over this strong statement, I think it's just Donna especially that I did npt care for), but have been learning to appreciate. Just prefer Bobby and Jerry singing, and Brent on the organ(Ron Mckernan not included in comparison). Anyway-
This has great sound/visual quality. Love watching them play, this actually highlights a few things(imo)- The amazing range in sound- coming from a layperson, there's a whole lot going on here. Rare spotlight on Bill ane Phil. Footage of the band doing best, improv off another and jamming.

Difficult to nail down best versions of songs, i wish there were more live performances that featured new minglewood blues.
Here's a good one, sure plenty have seen. Bobby doesn't appear to be feeling it, but the magic going on between Jerry and Brent is amazing to watch.
