Holey stolelee, that playing in the band took me somewhere..
Can't speak for Dead and co at present or even the last 7 or so years. When they first brought out Mayor I thought it a joke.. But he shreds, or was at the few big venues/festivals I saw them at. Obviously with a pop singer being the lead, it'll raise eyebrows and bring in... A different crowd.
It might make some purists/older heads cringe, but this is how the music never stops. So if John Mayer is responsible for the surge of new blood that'll keep it playing once we are truly dead, and opening new eyes of the world- so be it.

It just pisses me off everyone shit all over John Kadlecik but John Mayer is somehow now like God's gift to deadheads or something. I just can't leave that fact alone.

I like Mayer. But Im a guitar player and I can see his work is well studied,, his rig is basic and not to many designer toys on his amps. That's playing .. I liked his youtubes and insta lesson too, his vocals are not to bad. Sugaree is probably my fav..

I think DSO has its own grove. There's a little speed with the band, as they covering the sets of the past.

Derkstar is who I followed the closest, totally fell out but hope they've kept the vibe. They always had a very intimate and kind crowd, ontop of the mind splitting performances.
Chief, who cares what or who. Its about the music, not the politics*
My recommendation is to eat more L.

Not much of a roaster, and you're not in any minority. Many made the transition after Jer passed. Trey is a god in own right. The few shows I went to were scary, and my friend got robbed. Hard drugs instead of psyches. Could just be a regional thing, not sure.
Have touched on this before, which got me to really question what it is. The only thing Ive come up with is perhaps trauma bonding.. I listen to other jam bands. But nothing 'clicks' with me like Dead does. Their work has gotten me through some very dark times, and no others can make me smile, laugh, and cry. Listening every day is mandatory therapy for me. Neighbor behind me yells, 'Turn it up!'

Phish is good. Its just a completely dofferent style imo. They defintly jam tho. Even if i dont like the tone or the insyruments or general vibe, their improv os killer, and they kill it. Lyrics are pretty cool from what ive heard. And honestly everythong ive heqrd from phish just sounds like phis to, which is cool, kinda like late deqd i guess. But the dead had awesome acoustic, anything with pig and the harmonica was its own class, and mickey really added a whole historical/world aspect to the shit pretty much all the time. And the deads lyrics are obviously timeless, i dont care what your favorite phish song is. I would be interested to listen to a reccommended phish acoustic set.

@ birdeatingspider, I love Brent's sound them early months, especially during that PITB....
Ozzie Ahlers is on the keys for that March 1 , '80 JGB link above....you should check a track or 2 out, great sound he's got....wonder why he didn't make it out with the band more??

Not that my opinion means anything, but as far as the whole Mayer thing goes....meh...not a fanboy.....but whatever....it's getting kids out there.
I actually wish mickey n billy take over n put bobby in the back seat.....let them invite some guest percussionists and just get weird.....Without Hunter adding his contributions, it's all soooo........

CHeifM4sterDiezL said: Yeah but we've seen all those guys play a million times over the years and Mayer is a complete joke. The crowd is even worse its funny cuz I've been going to grateful dead events locally for years and years where the fuck were any those people you see at dead and co? It's all like middle aged mouth breathers who's favorite song is like trucking or Casey Jones. I don't know who's giving those idiots money and booze but they sure seem to have alot of it. I mean I can't wrap my head around it who's giving someone so fucking dumb that much money? Then I'm sitting in a literally stadium full of them just full to the brim with these idiots so a soon as I'm done waiting in line for my $17 fuckign bud light I pretty much have to get right back in line if I want to drink enough beer to hold a buzz for a fuckign grateful dead show fucking have to walk a mile to smoke hash because if try toke up in the crowd you'll be the only one with the balls to smoke at a dead show filled with yuppie idiots that some crocodile dundee looking security officer spots it immediately and hassles you. Then when your buddy tells him to suck his dick some third man in throws a drink and some major scuffle breaks out and your ejected before set break. I mean what the fuck kind of vibe is that for a dead show? How is that fun in anyone's mind? I really like the other side projects like Billy and the kids which features Aaron magner of the disco biscuits and last time they had Billy strings play. Those shows blow anything dead and co out the water. Way more chill vibes and less of some kinds clip show money trap for middle aged idiots. That's the vibe I got money grab shitshow.

I've never been to a Dead & Co show...but from the videos I've seen, the crowd I've seen, and stories and I've heard from friends of mine that have been....
...that is basically exactly the sort of impression I've had of the scene/vibe at those shows lol.
The few times I've tried listening to some Dead & Co I just can't really get into it...for the most part it just feels like it is lacking energy/vibe. The energy/life in the crowd also often appears flat. In general there just seems to be a "commercial" vibe about the whole thing.
JRAD reminds me of the GD and has more of that "vibe" going on more than Dead & Co does lol.

Yah I like jrad over even DSO. That has Tommy Hamilton of Brothers past. Thams absolutely shreds. He plays with that Billy in the kids project sometimes too which is dank and some times like Reed Mathis of tea leaf green. I mean those are all some my fav musicians randomly coming together to do some wierd shit with kreutzmann and others thats the real continuation of the evolution of the sound
