 Advice for a singer?

My friend and I are going to start a band this summer, and I'm going to be the lead singer. There's one problem: We don't have a P.A. system. I realize that most venues have one, but I need something for when we're practicing so I can hear my voice. I was thinking of asking my parents for something like this as a birthday present, but do I really need something like that, or is there a better option? What do you do for vocals when you're practicing?

go to a music store and rent a pa system...you'll get monitors, and whatever else you need..
we had one for a month, two monitor speakers and three mics
we paid $170 for one month,,,
