Will a 4000k LED do the trick?
    #26424845 - 01/09/20 02:37 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Reading around here I've learned that most people feel that diffused sunlight is best, followed by 6500 k artificial light.

Well, sunlight isn't a possibility but the closet shelf where I put my tubs today does have a nice, 30 inch long LED above it, running at 4000k. I had originally planned to just replace the bulb, but it turned out that this apartment building uses these permanently installed LED strips. I was disappointed when I too the cover off!

I am trying to be discrete so if I need some other lighting it could get tricky.

Is it possible that the 4000k LED might be enough?

I guess no one has ever tried it.

Im thinking it is worth a try.

You can't just put a lamp with the right coloured bulb in the closet?  Or leave the closet door open while the daylight comes in the room through the window?

It's enough if you want less than the best results.

Only one way to find out! Give it a try. Then let us know how you think they did.

It's gotta be better than having them grow in darkness. At least this way you'll have pins go straight up and be more uniformed. They want to reach towards the light so having anything is better than nothing I would imagine.

I personally just use an under cabinet light 5k I got from Walmart for like 10 bucks and it's worked like a charm as far as having straight growing fruits.

To my surprise, there is no electrical outlet in the closet and it would be very conspicuous to run a power cord from outside. And no natural sunlight comes in.

My plan was just to check the bulb and replace it if necessary but I never guessed it would be some kind of permanent fixture like that!

If anyone knows any battery operated lights that might actually work, I'd be very interested!

I bought little battery operated remote control led lights that are about four square inches. No idea what the specs are but they definitely make them.

I’m not sure but you might be able to rig something up with a portable battery for a laptop. I’m sure they make lights with usb plugs, or some adapters. Would be way easier and cheaper to just run a cord under the carpet or whatever. Or just only run the light at night when you’re sleeping if you’re worried somebody will come across it while you’re gone.

Yea I 'm considering something like that.  It seems l ike the little battery operated ones don't last long, but I haven't been searching that long.

If I could find something that was really small, I could stick it to the underside of the lids, let it run during the day, and charge at night, should be fine for this temporary setup.

I have started looking for something like that, but it has to be battery operated and preferably rechargeable.  I only have 3 shoeboxes so hopefully will find something

4000k is warm color temp wise, and I would try to augment it with something, even some blue led fairy lights will help but something over 5000K is recommended.

Ok, I made a decision and now I have a package with these rechargeable LED lights coming.

Looks like the right temperature range, and they battery should allow it to run for about 10 hours on a charge. Since this is temporary, it seems fine to charge them each morning and then run them during the night.

I am lighting up shoeboxes, so I'm really curious how it is that so many people have opaque lids on the shoeboxes. Doesn't that mean the light just comes in sideways and the pins would gravitate towards them? I am seeing mixed opinions on this.

I could fasten the lights to the underside of the lid but that woudl be a pretty bring light just inches from the substrate. It would be easier to light up the bin that the shoeboxes are in (atually big a cardboard box), but that would only make sense if it's true that it doesn't need to come from direct overhead.

Any opinions on this one?

With sunlight indirect is fine, I’m assuming shoeboxes in such a small space you’d be best off putting the light in between them, maybe even on the ground facing up.

Take the lid off when the shoebox has good colonization and replace with a white shopping bag with a couple of small holes it. This gives you more light when you need it most and gives the mushrooms room to grow.

yea I've seen people doing this and it seems like it could work well.

I have some extra shoebox size tubs, and these little lights (which are great, btw) can be stuck to the inside of one. So, I was thinking it might be good to just do a regular dubtub, with the light on the underside of the flipped tub on top.

I know that I don't really need a dubtub and a shopping bag is fine, but since the tubs are laying around I might as well use them , if only to hold the lights!

I would recommend 6000K or 6500K.

Im sure 4000K will work but not sure how well. Would make an interesting experiment
