WBS Spawn Moisture Issues and Ideas to Try to Fix Them
    #26434056 - 01/14/20 09:56 PM (4 years, 14 days ago)

Hello, Everyone! First attempt at growing is currently underway and I think I may be having issues with the moisture levels of my WBS spawn.

Although I spend a lot of time on here reading and learning, I didn't strictly follow any one tek because a friend of mine who has grown successfully before is guiding me through the process. I decided to just trust him and follow his advice instead of following advice on here this time. He learned how to grow from the owner of a farm in Humbolt that he worked at.

We roughly followed the classic PF Tek with a lot of little variations.
So far I've inoculated 3xBatches of 12 jars. There have been moisture issues with every batch. For the next go around I plan to follow pcubmycol's WBS prep TEK outlined in 'THE WBS to POO TEK in full.'

First batch my friend prepped the WBS and I took notes. He started by soaking the WBS in a pot, collecting all the floaters, bringing the WBS to the brink of a boil and then reducing the heat to simmer, stirring somewhat regularly in-between. This process took about three hours until we started filling our jars. About a week later he said a few of the jars were too dry and so he suggested to rehydrate them. We poked a syringe (used for a previous inoculation, steralized by running 91% ISO through it a few times) through a sponge soaked in ISO  and the polyfil fresh syringe into the polyfil (medical tape)and injected distilled water into the dry jars. The jars were inoculated on 12/29 and the photos below were taken today. Many of the jars from the batch seems to have dry and wet spots and aren't colonizing evenly, but are ultimately working out. Here's those two 'reydrated' jars

In addition to moisture issues, the temp has been a bit low (high 60's) and I ordered a few seedling mats with a thermometer today.

I attempted to inoculate the second batch with 8ml from a B  syringe on 1/5. On the advice of my friend, we decided to try and stretch those 8ml out over 12 jars. i'm concerned that I may have stretched the liquid in the syringes too thin, I think the WBS is too moist and am worried about contamination or other issues that could arise from it, but I am hopeful that controlling the temperature may help them.

I did a g2g transfer for 12 jars from the healthiest looking jars from 12/29 on 1/11. There is mycelium on the top of the jars, but I'm worried that the jars will eventually be ruined by over-moisture OR by failing to remove the corn kernals from the WBS (new batch of birdseed) while prepping it.

What do you all think? Are the last two batches probably screwed if I don't do something? What would you do? My idea is to take the 1/11 batch and out of the 12 jars punch another hole in the lid and put polyfil over 4 of them, but maybe to use a more breathable fill than medical tape? I also thought I might sanitize my glovebox and dump the contents of another four of the jars together and mix them up evenly, then put a heating pad under them and try and get as much moisture out of the WBS as I can and then re-seal them. I was thinking I would see what happens if I just let the other four go.

If any one of those three work better than the others, I was thinking I'd try the same thing with my B  jars after observing the results of the g2g jars for 24-48 hours.

I'll wait a few hours to see if I get any feedback here and if I don't then I'll just go forward with my plan. If that happens and anyone wants me to update them on the results, lemme know and I will.
Should I go through with my plan?

Those jars look fucked. To prep was, soak for 6-12hrs, remove floaters and rinse thoroughly, heat to slightly below boil.  Use polyester filling, the kind from stuffed animals. There are tons of teks on here for wbs prep.

Id start over, the prep has produced far too wet grains

and use the photo upload here

WBS is the easiest thing to use.  Boil water and add the seed to it.  Half hour later its ready to use but u can leave it in there for 24hours

Use micropore tape, its easy, just use 2-3 layers

Do yourself a favour and buy some millet instead of wbs

Are you using agar?

I have never boiled wbs, I just leave it to soak overnight, drain well, and PC. They have always looked quite dry afterwards but I haven't had contam issues that Ive been aware of yet.

Wbs i bring water to boil in my pc, pull it off and then drop in the wbs once the water stops bubbling.

Sit an hour, drain and rinse, and then sit a while.

I started letting it sit overnight a nd filling jars in the morning. Load and pc.

Worked good for me

Tyvek is free at the post office and has worked better than mp tape for me, although using a syringe I put the tape over the hole after.

Okay, I'll get some micropore tape from a pharmacy and try it out.

I'll also give millet a try after my current bag of WBS has run out.

I want to try agar eventually, but for the time being I'm just doing straight up g2g or spore innoculations.

Youre using a syringe straight to wbs?

Did you use a pressure cooker?

Agar is the first thing you should use.  Its great fun and next level for this hobby.

I did, but the only one I have access to at the time is my girlfriend's 6L Instapot. I'm going to get a larger capacity stovetop pressure cooker as soon as I can.

I've been reading a ton of WBS (and other) teks and I think that I'm going to first use the two 5 gallon buckets with 3/16 holes drilled in the bottom of one to filter the corn and sunflower seeds out of my WBS, then follow a tek like you describe and one like tattersail describes and compare the results with a g2g transfer.

Thanks for all the foodback!

After reading Bod and Pasty's agar teks today, I completely agree that it would have been best to start there in a lot of ways and I kinda wish I had. As soon as my budget allows, I'm going to invest in all of the materials necessary to start using agar.

For getting seeds out it’s way easier to just fill the bucket with water. They all float and you can scoop them out with a strainer.
