Questions about brf cake in plastic container
    #26433422 - 01/14/20 03:10 PM (4 years, 15 days ago)

Hello All, I'm new here
I am wanting to try to make my own brf cakes in 1.2 cup rubbermaid containers steamed in a pot for 60 mins. Inoculated with a burma spore syringe, then once full of myco placed in my sgfc. Will this work? any feedback is appreciated. My Sgfc has holes on all 6 sides and is lifted up off the table, when fruiting comes I will line it with damp perlite. Right now it has the jars I inoculated 3 days ago inside, top off of the tote. Those jars are originally from MWG and I'm not sure how they will do, that is why I would like to make my own brf cakes.

If you already have mycelium growth in the other jars, why not inoculate with that, rather than taking chances with the syinge?

Thanks for the reply!
I didn't know I could do that, I'm a bit overwhelmed with info. My jars i got from MWG don't have any growth yet. I read a ton of posts on how unreliable ordering pre sterilized jars are so my faith is low. If they do grow how could I use the mycelium to inoculate? :syringe:

You’d need a SAB and good sterile technique to transfer mycelium from jar to jar.

I do have bods easy af sab. I just don't know how that would work with a brf cake since the top layer is verm. Would I just lay a piece on top of the verm and screw the lid back on?

You’d need to pour it out and put the transfer on the brf.

Really if you’re considering that you’d be better off dropping the myc into a jar of bird seed.

Pf tek is designed for syringes, no reason not to use them unless you have a really dirty one.

Even syringe to grain will do the trick.

Personally I’ve only done a couple brf cakes,  but they were way more work than making a shoebox, and produce much less.

When I first started I made a couple brf jars and a couple quarts of seeds, and by the time I had my first 3 grams off a cake I already had an ounce and a half from my shoebox.

Forgive my noobi-ness but can you explain how the birdseed works? i don't have the space to be boiling bags of birdseed. I am totally willing to get some coir and place into a shoebox, my only hesitation is with getting a second flush on those. Can you take the sub out to dunk? or just fill it with water refrigerate overnight then drain? many thanks :heart:

Oh you’d need a pressure cooker for seeds.

If you’re willing to get coir you can break up your cakes into a shoebox and it’ll be the same thing. I think  there’s a whole thread about brf shoeboxes.

You’ll almost definitely get more mushrooms than fruiting cakes and with way less effort. Just mix it with coir and leave it, maybe mist every couple days.

Idk I just really hated cakes lol. This was my best one

Vs this in the same time

For a second flush you can just pour water in the shoebox and let it sit an hour or two then drain it out and you’re good to go again.

whoa! That's what I want! so I can colonize my brf cakes then shred them into coir for shoeboxes? I have a 55q sterilite tub with holes in it now, can I tape up those holes then do a mono tub like bod does? Also back to my first question, see those plastic cups in my first post? I just want to put two holes in the top with poretape covering them for my brf cake cups, good idea or just no?

I’m not sure about those but if they’re pp5 I don’t see why not.

You’d need a lot of cakes for a 55qt. Shoeboxes are 6 I think. But yep you can shred the cakes into coir and they work the same as jars of seeds or oats.

Shoeboxes are like 80 cents at Walmart usually

So how many cakes per shoebox? those containers are 1.2 cups I'm going to try to make 8 of them.

I guess really you could use as much as you want, just use the same amount of coir. I always use a quart of spawn.

The plastic is a liner, helps with side pins and makes it really easy to take the whole thing out of the tub to harvest, plus keeps the tub clean.
