Been scoping my neighborhood and immediate area (E. Cobb) for about a week now, walks every morning, some hikes here and there... and nothing... Hate to ask the stereotypical noobie question, but damn, how are you guys finding all of these?? I've heard Gwinnett is a hot spot, but I have to imagine there's some treasures to be found in E. Cobb right? Don't wanna spin my wheels tho, if anyone's feeling generous, LMK some tips. Been trying to stick to spots with red clay, pine trees, shady, etc. but so far nothing. Obviously no one wants to share their spots, but if there are any "known" spots that you'd recommend a new hunter to try as a first pass, LMK. My yard and 'hood are exploding with amanitas and boletes, but those aren't doing me any good.
Obvious answer is "just keep looking" I know... hopefully i'll have a post of my own this season in not too long. Til then, enjoying all of these awesome pics, thanks for sharing, every pic I see gets me a little more familiar with the tell-tale characteristics. Cheers.

Cliff- looking under pines burned me out. Truth be told, I learned a lot about local fungi and identification by searching pine and clay, so it was ultimately quite valuable. With that knowledge I was sure as shit when I finally found target species. Young pine and sweetgum are good indicators of previously disturbed soils, but that habitat can be found for miles on end.
If you want to key in on some other aspects of habitat, then take a look at some of these areas:
Slopes graded in the last 5-10 years, sewer line access trails, slopes associated with creek beds, apartment complex drainage management slopes, and hilly clearings for the running of telephone poles. Focus on areas that maintain moderate moisture and shade. Too wet, too dry, too shady, or too sunny are not beneficial.

Forsyth County. I am glad I got what I did but I could’ve had a northgahunt kind of haul if I didn’t have to destroy most of them.
Sorry I meant to put Forsyth. Forget where I was.

FSHuntings said: I sinned today boys. It really hurt to be honest. I found three massive patches and I had to mow them all due to people watching me. Massive patches I am talking I probably slaughtered 150+ weilii.
Fuck me man.. I got a picture of one of the patches and I will have it up later.
Damn. I would have had to have picked as many as I could if they asked, I collect them amd put them in coffee tables as decorations or someshit
I missed this somehow. That’s a good idea. I know they do not know anything about mushrooms. They have chanterelles and oyster growing all over the property and never touch them . I just would be wayyy to nervous to ask. My nerves would get to me and I would look so nervous.
