Weilii find near Athens yesterday. First weilii I've ever found and I'm super new to foraging. Good stuff! Only 2,but I'll be keeping an eye on that spot in the coming weeks.

Evly, I was planning to head out to look tomorrow. I wonder if your spot is the one I was scoping out? Don’t want to encroach on someone’s patch

Empty construction lot near CherokeeCo. 3 year old developing neighborhood. Honestly, it would be nice to see someone other than the occasional jogger. We can share, doc! Plus I have a feeling there will be TOO many this fall. The surrounding area is suburban with cow / horse farms near by. They were found on a down-hill slope, in a small run-off near the street curb, near an electrical box and street lights; With lots of leafy and grassy debris filling the runoffs. The mowers cut back the tall grass just 4 days ago so I imagine these were narrowly spared of the blade and have been aging since. What leads me to believe this is there seems to be the remnants of some chopped aborts on the side of the large cluster. It also appears that these grow larger in the spring than in the fall. Perhaps the heat spike, on-and-off rain, as well as the fresh grass clippings, attribute to better fruiting conditions. I also think FAE is high at this patch because it is on a very exposed, grassy, downward sloping hill. The blueing is also more intense than when I found them, in the same location, last fall. Same reminiscent smell.

I am very thankful for the knowledge that you all share. I feel like I learn something new almost every day.
Today I took doctorghosty's advice recently provided in such detail a few pages back. One word in particular. Crouch.
I was sort of overwhelmed looking at the habitat head on. But then I crouched and looked again. They were right there waiting on me. Felt like I was just drawn to them.

Yes the crouch is crucial especially in wooded habitats. It can be sensory overload with all of the debris on the ground.

Great job Blue_falcon. Love the colors. I too found these by accident today while I was de-trashing, right before I was about to leave. Last year I was jogging and spotted them when my dog stopped me to smell something. Kinda makes you think they find us.

If anyone can answer two questions that were raised over the years, about these weilii, I would much appreciate it: 1. If these (or P.caerulescens) were used ritualistically by ancient Native Americans and; 2. Has anyone ever found proof of sclerotia production? I've found them with chunky, large bases at the stem, but I'm not sure that is what is meant by sclerotia.

Lol, I was just saying that because I’ve had my eye on a particular paved path in Dekalb. But im sure there’s more habitat than either of us could cover

1. Yes, native Mexicans, the Mazatecs used them.

Will the wet cardboard in a plastic bag thing work for these stipe butts? Or burry them in an old wood chip pile?

I’ve never successfully propagated them but I’ve been sticking stem butts in the hill in my backyard for years

Ah man great finds! I’m going to check that grassy hill that was graded 2018/2019 winter this weekend. I am quite jealous.

Those are always good spot. I do grading all over GA. And when id find some id takenthem to work. Let a few caps drop spores on the tracks. And biry stem stem butts alongbthe shadiest areas around loblobby pines we directed water flow towards

I’ve successfully propagated using stem butts on cardboard in a mason jar- Started with butts on cardboard in the jar with lid loosely secured. Left in cool dark place(In dresser drawer), burping jar every so often to exchange air inside. Once the cardboard began to show decent colonization, I added sterilized pine chips to the jar along with crushed sweetgum balls, pine needles, red dirt, sort of like a concocted substrate. Cardboard colonization began to jump to the wood chips and eventually took over the jar. All of this took place over a years time, always burping jar for fresh air once a week or so. ITS A SLOW PROCESS WITH WEILII. A year later when my concoction was fully colonized, I buried the contents of the jar with fresh wood chips a few inches underground, covered with pine needles and leaves and whatnot. Months later it produced fruit. At that point I spread the “culture” throughout a shady grassy area for nature to take over, slightly buried by compost.

Like doc said, they 100% were used by natives. If I’m not mistaken, It’s one of several species Called Teonanácatl Or “flesh of the gods” and more recently named derrumbe “landslide mushroom” by Oaxaca locals.
I personally believe this species to be sacred and should be treated as such. Much respect.
