Only A Conduit said: Im amazed to see ovoids this late in the season. Question: do ovoids smell the same as weilii?
I think all psilocybes have a similar smell. Maybe not identical, but similar. There is probably variability among the different species, likely driven by differences in substrate and conditions. I’ve never found cubes but find it hard to imagine a dung lover smelling the same or as good as a grass/wood lover.
My experience is pretty limited, so maybe someone else will chime in.
To me ovoids and weilii both smell pleasant, kind of earthy/mushroomy, but not like other mushrooms. It’s tough for me to describe.
The weilii I’ve found didn’t exactly blow me away with some distinct scent the way some people describe. I was honestly expecting more given the hype. Maybe my nose isn’t as sensitive. Maybe it depends on how moist and fresh they are.
Still, I’m always wary of potential finds that don’t pass the sniff test. Once you know the smell, I think it’s a good tool to help in ID’ing (but obviously can’t go off smell alone).

ovoids buried and decaying wood on floodplains for Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata. also woodchips. for your best chances of success, hunt areas where there is an adjacent watersource sometimes overflows. box elders usually proximate and a preferred media. Leratiomyces ceres (in fall/winter) and Clathrus stinkhorns (in spring) have also have been a decent indicator in my experience. (season is Feb through early June)
weilii recently disturbed earth (new development in the past 2-15 years, where nature is beginning to take cleared and/or landscaped land back over with mosses, briars, herbaceous plants and developing trees) usually with young pines for Psilocybe caerulescens. also the grasses near the areas mentioned before. Lacrymaria lacrymabunda often found fruiting in suitable habitats. (season is may through end of November)
cubes and copes weathered cattle dung for Psilocybe cubensis and active Panaeolus/Copelandia species. stable shavings are often an idea habitat. Panaeolus cinctulus will also fruit from decaying haybales sometimes. Well manicured, lush, fertilized lawns in fancy schmancy neighborhoods also hold active Panaeolus on occasion. (season is all year round depending on weather)
gymns woodchips and decaying wood for active Gymnopilus species (season is all year round depending on weather)
general tips 1. check this board regularly, when others are finding them your chances of finding them is greatly increased.
2. check any suitable area you find regularly. check it at varying times after rains. if you visit a spot 3 days after rain every time, you might never know that they're starting to fruit on day 4. if you visit a spot a week after rain every time, you might never know they're starting to fruit after day 2 and withering up and disappearing before you're getting there.
3. if you're hunting a large area, move very slowly and change perspectives by getting closer to the ground on occasion. sometimes mushrooms that are nearly invisible from one perspective jump out at you if you're crouching down or sitting.
4. take the same route there and back, for the same reasons as the changing perspectives rule. i can't tell you how many times I've stepped right over a bunch of mushrooms on the way to another spot but then spotted them on the way back.
5. if you find a suitable irrigated area make special note of it and hunt those areas when there's no rain in the forecast.
6. when you're first starting out, please at least try to ID every mushroom you find. if you don't want to do an ID request here, throw it up on MushroomObserver.org and see what the community says, you can even set it up to email you when a name has been suggested. if you don't want to do that, just PM me a picture and we can figure it out. It will sharpen your focus and train your eye. if you know what everything you find is, finding actives becomes a whole lot easier.
7. at first, finding mushrooms will not be natural for you. as you put in hours, they will start to jump out at you and eventually you'll be so good at spotting them out that people will think you've developed a super power for doing it.
8. hunting in the morning always seems to be more productive to me and there's probably a million little micro influences (i'm most focused/productive in the morning, I like it to me cool, I feel like there are definitely less people around, sometimes the dew can makes things I wouldn't normally see standout, ditto for shadows, morning is my favorite light for photography, etc) why that is true for me but other people prefer mid day and others prefer the afternoon. try each many times and see what you prefer.
9. eliminate as many distractions as you can. take off your sunglasses. take out your earbuds. put your phone on vibrate.
10. teach yourself to enjoy a multitude of outcomes. if you make actives the one and only thing you're going to be excited to find, you might find this hobby very frustrating and your patience and attention span will be short as a result. find other aspects of the hunt that make sure your feedback loop ends with enjoyment. find other edible mushrooms = enjoyment. take pictures of a really cool bug = enjoyment. walk up on on some deer peacefully munching on grass = enjoyment. find a russula with a yellow stipe = enjoyment. find a bolete you have never see before = enjoyment.

ID requests go in the main forum.
ask any other questions you have in here, everybody is nice and wants to help. And if they're not nice or don't want to help we are generally dicks to them until they come around or leave.

Thank you for the miniguide ghostly! I do appreciate the effort and I saved a few of those key points in some notes for later on when I need to remember certain species for certain areas. Good looking out
