How can you tell? The color looks a lot more like Google images of junonious to me. It doesn't have the foreskin on the shaft?

Yeah thats a difference. Junonious tend to have a more prominent veil present.

Some more "pre-dried" shrooms. I knew I shoud've checked this patch yesterday. Most of the pins got fried by direct sunlight. Don't think i'll be finding any more of these guys this year.

I don’t know what that last cluster is but they were pretty and the puppers was obsessed with them.

Thanks Doc! I’ll be checking as long as conditions are favorable. Definitely been surprised that they are still going - although they are certainly tapering off.

Me too man! It’s been a few years since I have had them. I did find a few inactive pins in the leftover wheat straw.

Yeah you said it pretty well a few years ago that "gyms are a novelty item". Btw I love puppy pics

Eh if you’re not going for the full on trip they’re nice. I like to eat them when I do outdoor activities where I still need to be “there” but still have a nice high.

Hello, I would just like to take a moment to thank the participants of this thread each year for your contributions. I’ve been going back through some of the previous years threads and there is a wealth of information that you folks have made available. I’m coming back to this community after an 11 year hiatus. I began picking weilii in 2002 and stopped in 2009 when it was time for me to get sober. Now conditions are such in my life that people I love are seeking experiences with these mushrooms so I’ve decided its time for me to put some of these old skills to use. I don’t plan to visit any old spots at all. Only new spots for me. My experience has always been that they find you rather than the other way around. I plan to share with this thread what little knowledge I have to offer.
I’m really taken aback by how many things have changed in the academic mycology world since I’ve been. The names and classifications have all changed. Psathyrella velutina is now Lacrymaria lacrymabund. Weilii is now caerulescens. And nobody was talking about ovoids back then. We were finding them, we just thought they were weilii. Kind of wild. I would love if some of you could provide some context on that for me

Welcome back og. I'd be curious to see if you'd have any luck at spots from over 15 years ago. Also I'm sure you've noticed that their range has expanded well beyond what it was assumed to have been back then.

Thanks! My old spots were almost exclusively in residential areas in Forsyth county and I’m not going back there. It was easier to get away with rummaging through peoples yards when I was college age. I have no reason to try that now. Maybe the cow field where I found cubes still produces though? That was in north Forsyth. But again, I’m not going back to any of those places.
To your other comment, I knew the assumed range was way off when I met people in 2004 who were finding weilii in south georgia. Like Tifton area.

Ahh gotcha. I'm with ya on that. I've never spent really any time foraging in neighborhoods, mostly parks/wooded areas. It's worth the little extra effort imo.

I was driving to Florida recently through South Georgia and couldn’t help but notice the abundance of red clay and loblolly pines... seems like it would be pretty prime habitat. Maybe there just aren’t people hunting, or if they are, they are exclusively looking for cubes.
