just to clarify this spot isn't deep in woods. it's a couple dozen or so yards from a parking lot at the bottom of a steep incline with youngish sweetgums and pine (mostly sweetgum). They fruit from the sloped area as well

For all the Panaeolous hunters here, when could we expect this season to come to a close? What time of year have you found your last fruit(s) for this genus?

For me personally I can find cyans up until the first hard freeze in December if it hasn't gotten too cold by then.

Same last year I was finding them in low to mid 30s and high of 40 through December.  All the low laying areas of feilds that hold fog several hours into the morning/noon. Tend to fruit a lot because they keep getting that extra water

Got some questions my peoples
Any validity to the statement that weilii's thrive in areas of leaking sewage? Does the leaking sewage act as some sort of odious irrigation system? Would the fruits then be toxic to consume??

Personally I feel the fact they thrive in those areas above sewage lines  has less to do with leaking sewage and more so bc they're regularly getting disturbed by large machinery to tame plant growth.

What do you guys think??

I think it can be both.  Most of the ones you're finding along a sewage line are because it has been mowed down and disturbed.  There are other areas that have the weilii mycelium that don't have any readily available food and as soon as there's a sewage leak they start popping up.

I see weilii as a secondary or tertiary mushroom that don't break down the hard ligons and cellulose that a lot of pioneering mushrooms do, but instead go for the partially digested, but still nutrient rich substrates, similar to cubes and pans on manures.

I saw a video by Alan Rockefeller and he was asked if it was OK to eat mushrooms picked from highly fertilized lawns. His answer was it was OK because the quantity that would be consumed would be so small.

I subscribe to this thought process too. It wouldn't be a problem unless you consumed large amounts for a long time. That said though I would be more worried about the bacteria and such that would be im the area of the mushrooms, theres some pretty nasty diseases associated with human waste.

You sure about this? You're saying they get the nutes to promote fruiting from sewage?

Less numbers than spring and much harder to find due to the leaves and vegetation

I haven’t found any myself, but look for floodplains, and box elder maples, and wood chips.  YT has some good videos with wisipishrooms.  I thinks that’s his screen name.

Found this little cluster today.  110 g's wet.  It was in a yard so no habitat shots.

I have been to flood plains that are literally nothing but box elder and piles of fallen limbs and debris from when the river overflows but without any luck. I went many times this spring.

You guys didn't let me down,  I logged in hoping to see some weilii. How would y'all rate the season this year?  I haven't been around to see for myself.

Nice find onefortheroad, haven't seen any at most of my spots yet.

And so far so great Doc! It's been such a wet, productive year for us.
