Growing actives on wood logs?

Noob question here. Is it possible to inoculate azuresces on wood logs using plugs ? Like you would do with shiitake? And have them buried on horizontal. It seems so much less work this way than using sawdust or wood chips to create a bed.

How are you going to inoculate the dowels and if its how I think it is, why would you inoculate woodchips and expand that to more wood chips and get fruits the same year.
Check out my signature on how to.
If its possible with logs I would assume it would take years to fruit

selecting, cutting, drilling, plugging, and capping logs is real work. You would still have the labor of spore to agar, to grain, to p/cd dowel bags, (and dowels cost a lot more than smoker pellets, or a truckload of sawdust from a sawmill). You could cover a lot more area with a lot less time and money by spawning sawdust to chips and expanding that. I think most all shiitake producers are using sawdust blocks. Im sure your farmer market growers are using logs, but part of that is they may have an oak woodlot, and or access to oak tree tops from a logging job as a source for logs. Logs are kind of fun grows, and I'm sure they have their place, but from my experience i think I would have been wiser to use my shiitake logs for firewood instead.

I agree with all of that and in a month you can colonise 30 kgs of spawn and make 4 woodpatches where you can get 10 dried oz per patch. Logs are hard graft drilling all those holes, lifting, waxing colonising, hydrating fruiting ect. Id like to see if it can be done though.

I hope to try it in some this summer with gyms and ovoids. I did over 300 shiitake logs on my own one spring, hat was a real chore. I’ve got the sawdust spawn plugger and bits to fit in an angle grinder, and wax, so I figure I might as well give it a try for fun. The logs do make fun gifts.

Its very peaceful work. Weve just cut 200 logs and are letting them set for a while befor inoculation. Make a journal of your active logs and let me see your results later. Im tempted to put some of this aggressive Azures to more masters mix and use that as spawn for a few logs, why the fuck not. Wood active log grow along thread would be a fun idea for a few years............ Im in if you are.

Thank you for the imput. That was what I was thinking. Since I plan to inoculate a few logs this spring why not do one with an active. I don't care when or how much it will yield. But would be a nice addition to the garden.
