Shoeboxes, round 2 issues * 1
    #26432028 - 01/13/20 07:39 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Hello all!

So this is my second round of growing in shoeboxes. I had 0% contams in my BRF cakes (yes I know BRF is not the best for shoeboxes, but I have a lot of BRF I need to get through) and converted that into two shoeboxes (coir, verm). I was pretty proud that I didnt have any contams and everything but after a week, I'm a little concerned with the progress. My first shoebox was rather seamless, perfect temperature, lighting, humidity, etc.

However, with winter time, I now have less sunlight, lower temps, and dryer air. I know that mycelium sometimes grows on the top layers, but this didnt occur last time I grew in a shoebox...it also seems like it may be dry. Suggestions?

Looks fine to me, timetables for colonization vary a lot and I feel often times are exaggerated. I've had spawn runs on larger grows take up to three weeks so just be calm and try not to check it so frequently. Mother Nature isn't a Swiss watch.

Looks a little dry.  I'd give it a light mist.

Thank you thank you. I was concerned that it was something I was doing wrong with all the mycelium growth on the top that I haven't seen before. What is the reason for this (out of curiosity?)  I will def make sure to mist. Do both look like they need misting or just the one without the bag?

Also, any tips on when to mist when not to mist? I feel like I'm terrible at it. Last time I misted on my third shoebox flush and it started to get moldy. Not sure if that was just due to the flush number, to much mist, or just didn't need the misting.

Just mist enough to put small water beads on the surface.  Make sure not to over do it.  One time should be enough.  There is nothing wrong with the mycelium growing on the top.  Thats what it does.

Misting can be confusing IMO but as Ricky previously stated your substrate appears to be dry and below field capacity. When preparing your subs you should grab a handful and squeeze it and just a few drops to a small stream should run off. A trick that I have found is shine a bright led light like on your phone or an led flashlight and you will be able to see a fine mist on top of your substrate, not puddles of water. GOOD LUCK

The second one looks real dry to me.

What’s going on with the first one, there’s random dark streaks or spots in the sub, is water dripping on it or something?

Overall the myc looks pretty good.

Random dark streaks are just patches where mycelium hasn't grow. I lightly mister a few days ago and that really seemed to help. No longer looks dry and an ever so slight glisten from the moisture. I'll make sure to update in a week on the progress. Thanks for all the help!
