Australia ? Where to find canning jars
    #2643180 - 05/05/04 10:40 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

This cat I know who grows in perth
has been using bourbourn glasses with tape & foil
instead of the canning jars for too long.
What type of stores do I look in and what name are they recognised by here?

TDG have you even read your feedback?

trev you can get the proper jars at k-mart here, they have a selection of jars and preserving jars... but you dont really need them, glasses with foil works just as well.

trev, I've already sent you a PM.

For any lurking Aussies, K-mart (said to stock the American style mason jars -- both tapered and shoulderless), Magnet Mart (if on the east coast) as well hardware stores, be it BBC or Bunnings ect. Then there's homeware stores too (places that sell pots & pans), also check the homeware depts in David Jones, Grace Bros, Meyer and Target.

I have to admit, hunting down canning glassware downunder is a PITA. It took me a while to find it. So keep looking, it's out there. The only Aussie brand I know of is Fowler.

There's no walmart in Australia.

Foil topped glasses is rediculous in work load to output. Been there, done that. It sux. Canning jars with whole grains is the way to go. But at a pinch, it would do.

What do you mean by workload with the foil tops? It takes a few seconds to put the foil in and stick a rubber band over it. Obviously its only an option if you are doing pf tek with brf, not for grains or anything like that.

You've not only got the fiddly double layer foil top to fold up as a lid or rubber band it on, you also have the 2nd layer to add too, that ensures the whole lot stays free of the wet stuff when PC'ed so you retain the correct moisture ratio. That's a lot of foil sheet cutting/tearing to even start the PF tek. Only if you're rolling buds up to deal would you be playing with more foil.

Let's look at the PF tek:
It's not just the foil on glasses, you must have your vermiculite, water and BFR in correct ratio and well blended to carefully load the glasses with plenty of air spaces in the media. Compaction must be avoided. You don't get that worry with grains or the complication of ratios, there's a number of pre-soak grain teks to cover a newb. For what it's worth, the PF tek ratio made for 5 glasses will blow to 6 glasses, as there's approx. a 20% air filled increase.

You also have to wipe the top 10mm to 15mm clean with a damp tea towel so contams don't "wick" on down in the PF tek. That's fiddly.

Finally you have the contam barrier dry verm layer to add, talk about fiddly.

Now in that time I could prep a dozen or more grains jars for every 5 PF glasses with foil with far less mess in the kitchen and many fold the spawn/subtrate to play with and cheaper in outlay too.

What's more, there's four inoculation sites on a single PF cake, be it foil tops or solid lids (as per the shoulderless mason jars). That's 400% the contam risk of a single shoot grain jar. The truth is, you run the highest risk of contams at inoculation (if spore syringes, liquid inoculants and agar have integrity), because contams can "ride" in on the syringe spike itself. The PF tek means four times the flame sterilisations on the syringe spike = more work.

The PF tek is grossly over stated as the tek for newbs, esp. when compounded with foil lids for drinking glass only folks. It's a vehical for syringe sales by vendors. Whole grains is without question the easier path in every sense. This is why Stamets makes no mention of the PF tek in the TMC, he takes the newb directly to grains, because that's the logical path in many genera & cultivation use/applications. If you'd like a pdf copy of the TMC, PM me and I'll give you the link to download it.

I would only use the PF tek with foil tops if that's the only equipment I had available. But once you start grains, you won't go back, not unless you're experimenting with different inert water embellishing materials to assess "bridging effect".

Oh of course its more effective doing a grain tek, it just sounded to me like trev was doing the pf. Ive just harvested from my first grow after following pf tek most of the way and its been a cool experience with good results so its not worthless as something to start from.

Yeah am doing PF tek,... as I have not got a PC yet.
Ive just mastered PF cakes and next step is casings
I dont regret taking my time on PF tek with foil lids cause
its been lots of fun and a fair amount of sucess but it is heaps
Of piss-farting around and its losing its fun (growing).
I guess I was testing the water with the hobby and now I
know I like it I just want to streamline it.
