shook my jars right after i put in agar wedges. how big of a mistake was this
    #26431350 - 01/13/20 01:24 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

i can add pictures if needed but the title says it all. i did a little (lot) drinking and i rememebered that you wanted to put them on the side so you can see the growth. my first thought was to shake them to get them on the side rather than to tilt the jars. im afraid that ive destroyed the myc and ruined the grow. i did 4 jars of oats using the tic tac toe method and shaking them right after to get them on the sides.

Yeah it'll be fine. The myc will be disturbed but it'll bounce back. What you can do in future is roll the grain jars in your hand so that the grains cover the wedge as much as possible. This will give the myc lots of contact with the grains helping it to 'jump off' a bit easier then say a single point of contact. It also avoids sticking the wedge to the side of the glass where no grains can make contact.

rad. thank you guys for bringing me back from being too worried. theyve only been sitting for about 2 days but i cant see if anything is happening. i know this is a hobby for the patient. my biggest worry was that on some of the agar i can see that it either rubbed off or has collected in the middle. of the wedge. theres only really one or two that i can see that well on the sides of the glass.

Ive tried shaking and not after agar wedge inoculation. I think shaking has a slight advantage speed wise so long as you're careful not to get the wedge of agar stuck on the glass above the grains with your first shake

I thought you were supposed to do that to bury the wedges?

I’ve been dropping all the agar chunks then very slightly tilting the jar and smacking it rapidly. Makes the wbs jump and rotate, and hopefully rub myc all over.

Usually see it jumping to the grain by day two.

i like to place the wedge close to the side but not too close to where it sticks and then lightly but firmly smack the jar from the top to push the wedge down along the side so its still able to be seen. but thats just me. u gtta b careful tho cuz sometimes them fuckers will stick rite on the top and that sux when that happens. now that i think of it i think there is even a video on here somewhere somebody posted showin damn near exactly that method although i cant remember who posted it

I get faster colonization with shaking right away, however, I use big wedge, or a whole pasty plate for my grain masters

lol I had a couple big ones stick so high this morning I went back in and poked em off with the scalpel.

Hopefully I didn’t contaminate it but it was worth the risk instead of having so much good myc go to waste.

I like when they get so buried I can’t see them, then eventually see tons of myc poking through. It’s cool seeing it grow when it’s against the glass but I alway feel like that’s a whole surface that could be spreading to the grains.
