Omphalotus olearius, and ???
    #26431393 - 01/13/20 01:46 PM (4 years, 16 days ago)

Habitat:
Near Folsom lake, in the foothills west of the Sierra Nevada range.

1. The suspected Jack o' lantern mushroom was growing out of a live oak stump.

2.

The mystery mushroom was growing out of the duff near live oaks and pine. I only found 1, and it was definitely past it's prime. I couldn't get any spores out of it.
It the cap and stem reminded me of shiitake, and it had a very pleasant mushroom smell with a vague hint of shrimp.

Gills were attached to the stem

Stem was solid, 2 inches long, fibrous, and shredded into strands when I tried to snap in half. No bulb at base,

Cap: was fluffy and pillowy like a shiitake. About 2.5 inches across

Bruising: slow to bruise, rusty brown eventually.

Thanks, guys!

The "mystery" looks a bit like Armillaria, but that would normally imply there were more growing nearby.
But this specimen is so beat up it hasn't many features left necessary for a good identification.

Could perhaps also be Tricholomopsis.

Thanks! I'll check into Armillaria and Tricholompsis and look back for more of them.

Happy huntings!
