Agar bleaching?

Well Im still new to agar but Ive been noticing that when healthy myc. starts to colonize agar that it bleaches the agar that its laying on and it extends out a bit past the visible growth. I use the red pre-dyed agar agar strips, more of a fluffy cube strip.
I dont think it has anything to do with the pigment degrading because all of the agar around it stays red and when bacteria or mold are on the agar it doesnt change the color at all. With the bacteria it makes it stand out even more and with the mold it just stays red a become a bit less glossy looking from underneath the dish.
I noticed it when the growth in the plates was getting larger and it was really visible in thinner poured plates. Then what really made me think was after I did a transfer a small piece of agar landed on top of a large colony of healthy growth. I didnt want to move it so I just left it there figuring it would be fine. I come back 12 hours later and the piece that was laying on top had lost all of its color and was almost completely clear. I had to know why.
I was just curious to see if anyone has noticed that also? Does it happen with the other colors of dye? Is the myc. cleaning the agar before it colonizes it? Does it have something to do with that thin clear layer of whatever it is that you can see after the white growth?
Im interested to learn why and any info is great. I wanna know where that dye is going lol

I don’t use the colored agar but you can see this even on uncolored agar, just not as obvious. Fungi are a bit like inverted stomachs, that secrete digestive enzymes to break the sorounding molecules down to then absorb when ready. They seem to secrete metabolites that can get ahead of their growth to better break down the substance they are trying to grow on.

This happens with food coloring. Rarely i would color plates to keep recipes separate. I find absolutely no benefit to coloring agar it only helps hide contamination imo. People say it helps visualize contamination. My opinion is translucent agar is easiest to visualize everything on.

Huh, so they really are eating the dye. I wonder what its made of that theyre able to break it down. Yeah I was having trouble finding the telephone agar agar powder but they had this strip stuff. Ill have to go to another Asian grocery to see if I can find some. I will definitely try clear agar out when I run outta these strips. Thanks for the info guys

Most likely FD&C red #40. There's only a handful of food-safe dyes that are commonly used. Blue1, red40, yellow5, a few others.
Interestingly not every species can break down every dye and the rate they break it down varies too. Morel and oyster mycelium for example break down FD&C blue 1 super fast. Tampanensis breaks down blue 1 too but not as quickly. Some species don't break it down at all but I can't recall off the top of my head which ones.
