Advice on prep and eating of A. mella
    #26430158 - 01/12/20 06:48 PM (4 years, 17 days ago)

Wow, found four clusters of A. mella growing under decaying oak and bay laural not more than 200 feet from my front door!

PIC 1 and 2:  Old cluster, just want to confirm this is A. mella.  Spore print is indeed white.

PIC 3:  bastard banana slug is headed full steam for my mushrooms!  (So fast he ruined the shot...)

PIC 4:  Rising cluster found just 15 feet downslope from old cluster... I plan to harvest these... any advice?  I know to cook them well. Thanks!

Yes, those are Armillaria mellea. Just eat the caps and discard the stems, they are far too chewy and fibrous to use.

Looks like Armillaria to me. I've never tried them. They never seem appetizing to me with how they parasitize trees and spray white spores everywhere.

I usually only eat very young ones.  Those are older than I would consume.  Make sure you cook them thoroughly.  It can also help to parboil them before using to reduce whatever toxins cause some people issues.  If you haven't eaten them before, start small.  Some people can't tolerate them.

Yeah, you can boil the stems and make a stew... probably with some potatoes and garlic...
