Can I use a 'dirty' wood shredder for making growing medium?

Hi, I am new to growing mushrooms and I like to start with experimenting with king stropharia. I like to use wood chips as growing medium and I have a wood shredder available for making wood chips. This shredder isn't mine and is used before. My book tells me to 'never use your shredder to shred spent growing media, molds and other contaminants will stick to the walls etc.' Can I solve this problem by pasteurizing the growing medium afterwards? Or is this maybe not so important in case I want to grow king stropharia since this species is quite aggressive by itself and will out compete the potential molds?

This thread was moved from Getting Started.
Reason: Probably will get better answers here.

I don't think king stropharia will fruit WITHOUT bacteria and/or other contams to fight off. You're growing them in an outdoor bed or something? I'd say you're fine. Gonna get all kinds of random spores anyway.

Thank you for your answer! Yes, I will grow them outside, at the border of the forest.

I've used a chipper for shredding Coco blocks and bags of horse poo for different species of fungi and never had a problem as long as everything is pasteurised or sterilised afterward. Are you using spent substrate to grow the stropharia on? If you do run spent and contaminated substrate through the chipper then it will increase the spore load on anything that goes through after and potentially increase the chance of contamination. I would avoid putting blocks of trichoderma through and then using that for a substrate. If it's woodchip, Coco or hpoo I wouldnt worry. Technically branches that go through would naturally have trichoderma spores on them just at a lower level than contaminated blocks.

I see, my english isn't that good, but now I finally understand what 'spent' material means. I am not gonna use spent material. So when I am using fresh wood I do not have to pasteurize it right?

What are you going to be using for spawn?

Some people use wooden logs/thick branches, drill holes in branches, and place mushroom spawn in wood waiting for a rainy day.

not for king stropharia!
... it grows best on straw, leaves, potato peels .... years ago I had a bed with king stropharia ... fermented straw ... grew well. The mushrooms have eaten the snails.

I was thinking of sawdust spawn. Are there other options as well?

I am not the expert on outdoor growing, but I believe sawdust spawn is the most common method I've heard of. Sounds like you're on the right track
