Pleurotus ostreatus?
    #26429293 - 01/12/20 08:28 AM (4 years, 17 days ago)

I found something interesting when I was picking some turkey tail biking yesterday. Right next to the Turkey Tail I saw these large meaty mushrooms. I picked one while recording on my gopro to go through my books later. (Should have taken a spore print but didn't). When I went through the books later I became excited thinking I may have stumbled on Pleurotus ostreatus. I need to learn more about trees that's for sure.  If these are some Oysters I will go back ASAP to get them lol.

Habitat:
Bay area California on a stump (unsure what wood type)

Gills:
White and run down a short stem

Stem:
Stubby if present and thick/meaty

Cap:
"6 to 7" in diameter, off white to beige color , Super thick and heavy mushrooms, concave shape with wavy random edges

Spore print color:

I need to go back to this spot and collect a sample

Bruising:
Did not see any bruising after handling

Other information:
Didn't have a smell that I noticed

trying to en large your photos, no luck; keeps loading and loading -_-
Can't say about the mushrooms on the ground, but the fungi growing on that dead piece of would sure look alot like oysters to me. I'd say its worth collecting them..

The photos are not the best. Also not enlarging and I'm unsure why. The LBM's on the ground are in my signature. Those are Psilocybe Allenii. Kind of confuses the post. My bad. I  will go back out. Takes me an hour or so to get there on a bike from the trail head but I will totally go get those to take prints and post better pictures. There was a HUGE cluster on a different log out there but looked over ripe when I found em. Hopefully nobody took these off the log

mmm just make sure they are not too old too eat, check for mold and shit; the aroma is strong when dried..I use to eat them un dried, but you get sick of them; atleast I did. Cooking the water out of them first, before saute ing them is always a good idea;if you are gona eat them without drying.

You should probably wait for an "TI" though, to tell you what they are before thinking about eating them.

Really appreciate everyone weighing in on this! Doc you are the best as always!! And Santa, I rendered some chicken fat last night so I may sautee in that and then pour cream into it with parm cheese. Would be a good oyster sauce over chicken breast or pasta in general. Couldnt get back there yesterday but going this week. Its a journey getting there but well worth the effort with such amazing views and trails.  Ill post more later when I collect em. Still going to take a print just because.

Pleurotus is good with anything, if any of y'all haven't tried them,  don't let the smell through you off, they don't taste like they smell. I didn't care to try them at first because of the way they smell but so glad I finally gave in.

I found the best way for me to try a new mushroom species is to lightly fry it in oil or butter, add it to a bowl of steamed rice with a little salt and pepper.

Oysters I think are great sautéed with a little garlic and an added splash of dry white wine or sherry towards the end.
This works for most species though, but I find oysters to lose their prominence if put in stews together with a lot of
vegetables. I think they work best alone or in simple dishes, as a condiment, primarily for poultry but also good for white fish.
And as with all edible fungi, parsley is a good companion.

Here are some pics of what I gathered today and what seems to be a white spore print. The trail was closed to bikes so I walked out there. They smell good. Hint of fish smell kinda but slight. Question is.. Am I good to try em?
