Foraging Etiquette
    #26428585 - 01/11/20 05:44 PM (4 years, 18 days ago)

Just wanted to hear some points of view and get some additional information regarding the harvest and transplanting of wild mycelium. This was my first season foraging so I'm still learning about everything and was very nervous at first about making sure I did everything correctly so as not to disturb the health of the patch while picking. I see a lot of people online who dig up a piece of mycelium from the public patch to transplant elsewhere which I've thought in the past would be great for tricky populated areas. I was just wondering if this harms the overall health of the patch or will that mycelium regrow? Any input is appreciated. Thanks everyone!

No harm in moving some mycelium to start a new patch as long as you don't rape the old one to do it, a little will go along way. You can use stem butt or colonized woodchips, ether or both would be okay.

Spreading the love is always good and having a safe place close to home to harvest your favorite species is even better. It's safer to walk out back in the garden than raid the landscaping at a business or public park.

Thanks for the input. I'm still figuring things out so the more scientific points of the mycelium mat and how it's growth or lack there of still confuses me sometimes so I tend to err on the cautious side. Appreciate the knowledge!

Best practice is to try not to disturb the habitat. Do as little damage as you can to protect the habitat. Don't tip over logs, pull out grasses, rake the ground or leave large holes. If you protect the habitat then you protect the fungi.

Picking a few mushrooms with attached mycelium to start your own patch won't do much, if any, harm.

Ripping large chunks of earth out of the ground will likely be detrimental if this practice is repeated. Disturbing colonised mycelium prevents it from fruiting.
