Is this galerina, deconica, psilocybe? Can someone please help with identification of this mushroom?
    #26427982 - 01/11/20 12:08 PM (4 years, 18 days ago)

Habitat:
These were growing on the ground in southern AZ valley, altitude about 2200 ft, in mesquite firewood sawdust and possibly some walnut bark from Oklahoma area mixed in.  It was colder, cloudy and rainy when I noticed them growing.  They are in a very shaded area

Gills:
Look attached. Gills look darker tan or grey to me

Stem:
Length is about 2-4 cm, diameter 5mm, color light brown on mature mushroom, white on younger, straight lines toward the top.  I did not see a ring anywhere on the stem

Cap:
Diameter 1-2 cm, color tan-brown, .

Spore print color:
Dark spore print, looks purple black to me

Bruising:
No blue bruising.  Black bruising on older dried mushrooms.

Is there any likelyhood of this being poisonous or toxic?  Like galerina or a different poisonous species I do not know about?  What other species should I research besides deconica?  Thank you for your help

Consensus is Deconica, which does not have any desirable edible species as far I know. It's definitely not Psilocybe, and not a choice edible, so no point eating it.

Are you concerned with edibility because you ate some? They are not poisonous or toxic to my knowledge and not worth eating

Yes,
4 days ago, terrible gi symptoms but no vomiting.  Headache, ears ringing, cold hands, some tingling in hands.  Some disorientation.

I have been taking large amounts of milk thistle for past 2 days in case that may help.

Not sure about edibility of Deconica species. I haven't head about any deadly ones though.

You oughta fill out a poisoning report for NAMA. They track all potential poisonings. No one knows if something edible until they try it. GI issues are not unusual, even with some known edible species for certain people, but be very diligent about your symptoms.

Do submit a report though, you’d be helping out someone in your shoes down the road.

It apparently likes sandy soil so it's absolutely a contender.

Okay, thank you for the link.  Do you think more serious symptoms would have presented by now, (day 5), if it were a galerina mushroom?

According to the wikipedia article on amatoxins (found in Galerina species among others), serious symptoms
will occur by day 2 after ingestion:

"Amatoxin poisoning shows a biphasic clinical pattern. An initial (12–24 hours) period of acute symptoms is
followed by a period of relative wellness that lasts for 12–24 hours. After this period, hepatic and renal failure
supervene with death typically occurring from day 2 onwards."

That said, your mushrooms are not Galerina or any other amatoxin-containing species.
Are you perfectly sure you didn't eat any other kind of mushroom that aren't in your pictures?
And, how many of these depicted ones did you in fact eat?

Two,  they were growing in a 3 foot area.
They looked like the ones pictured.

Maybe the milk thistle is causing me to feel this way.

Although, the symptoms match closely to Coprine, minus a few symptoms. I did not drink and have not drank alcohol.

Okay, but even if it was Galerina, two wouldn't be enough to get the best of you.

Well, considering the stated side effects of milk thistle, you're probably right. I don't think your mushrooms contain coprine or any other mycotoxins.
Apart from the coprine containing species of Coprinopsis, there are only a few other dark spored species that are poisonous, and only mildly so.
They are Hypholoma fasciculare and Leratiomyces ceres, but they look very different to these ones.

I think you can leave it at that and calm down, just make sure you don't eat unidentified mushrooms in the future.

No worries.

Do some research on species occurring in your area. There are two interesting species of
Psilocybe growing in AZ, P. aztecorum and P. hopii. They have been found only a few
times, apparently at quite high altitudes.

Keep in mind that critters live in mushrooms, if you are having symptoms of diarrhea that's persistent it could be a parasite as well as something in the mushrooms. Go see a doctor if symptoms persist.
