Argon One case is here, time to try a Raspbery Pi * 1
    #26425780 - 01/10/20 01:30 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

So I've been putting it off for since Pi1 and drooling over the Pi4 since it was released. What I really didn't like about it though was the microcontroller setup where cables come out on all sides like a terminator octopus. Found this case the other day and just couldn't resist anymore. Took me 10 minutes of deliberation and then bought a Pi4 with 4GB and the Argon One case.

With the additional PCB the cables come out of the back now, and there's even a power button and cooling fan too. :awesome:

Probably just use it as a file server and a media center, but can do so much more.

Can't wait to try it out.  :awesomenod:

Holy shit this looks fucking awesome!!! Definitely going to cop one of these for myself. What do you plan on doing with your RPi?

Right now I've got an Pi4 4GB that I use to run plexmedia server, and transmission torrent client web interface, and then also provide networked access to my external hard drive. One of my other Pi3's I use as a PiHole server, and then the other one I use as an I2P router. Then I have all three Pi's joined together in a docker swarm for me to do local experimental development.

Right now I'm using these cases for my RPi's https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07XBKPZ87/ but the Argon one looks so much cooler.

I purchased it to replace my aging media center. I don't know if I'll be running Plex on it yet or just pick and choose what I want and play from VLC. It's just another Linux computer to me, of which I have a few of in the house, so the possibilities are endless. I'm pretty keen to see it's wifi capabilities too. If it's fast enough that'll be great. If not I'll have to install another wall socket. Will have to see how well it plays with the rest of my network but I don't anticipate any issues. If it's powerful enough to do all this and more I'll move my torrent client to it as well, will have to see. So many possibilities in this little box.

I'm running m0n0wall in Debian on a SFF PC as an authenticated proxy, which in addition to stopping unauthenticated outgoing traffic has a massive blacklist for incoming. It's out of support though and I've been threatening to update it to pfSense for years but haven't done it. PiHole looks pretty sweet though. I hadn't read about that before. I might set up PiHole and pass the DNS to that for a while. See how it goes.

Gonna buy a wireless keyboard and mouse for it, sit on my couch and easily watch my online documentaries and vids like I always wished I could. Gonna be so sweet. Oh yeeah!

I think the Pi4 is the first version of the Pi that can actually run plex decently so it's worth checking out. I do have mine overclocked though, and it wouldn't be able to stream quality to more than 1 device.  The wifi with the Pi4 is definitely much better, and is usable this time around, but the ethernet speeds are where its at :rocket:

Sick setup you got there with m0n0wall! pfSense is really cool, I use it at my work and fucking love it. Have wanted to check out OPNsense at some point, but have never got
around to it. I like PiHole a lot, comes with a real nice web interface. All my linux devices uses stubby+dnsmasq, and whenever they're on my home network stubby points to my PiHole, and this setup has been working amazingly so far.

What kind of keyboard and more are you thinking of getting?

Will start thinking about that wall plate I reckon.

Good thing with the DNS encryption, I've never bothered, just set resolv.conf and left it at that. By the time I get home I just want to watch my films and chat on forums. Slacker.

At my work we're running a Linux mainframe supporting a manufacturing plant with all the engineers, laboratories and processing stages as well as the administration. So many interesting technologies coming together all in one place. Other tech jobs I have had in the past pale in comparison, I get bored doing the same thing day in day out so it's perfect for me. Took years to really settle in and I'm still discovering more things all the time.

Dunno on the keyboard and mouse either. Something cheap so I won't cry when I get up off the couch and it smashes on the ground.  I have DasKeyboard and steelseries keyboards on my workstations. Both of them are pretty sweet. After buying the Das I swore I'd never buy another keyboard again. Someone gave me a steelseries though and I am actually pretty impressed. Same MX switches, so it's really not that surprising I guess.

You can also get some pretty cool wall plates that do both ethernet+wifi so that might be somethign to check out too, best of both worlds!

Yea the DNS encryption has been pretty handy, might be a bit overkill when I'm at home, but it's definitely useful while travelling.

Right on that sounds like a cool job!  It's really cool seeing the way different technologies get paired together in enterprise organizations, it's truly beautiful when it's done well.

DasKeyboard's looking pretty nice actually. Steelseries are always great too. Many years ago I managed to save up enough money to buy a ducky keyboard. That thing was amazing while it lasted.

Thanks for the tip on the wifi faceplate. Might be worth it. I had a bit of a peek at what's available. I've got a POE switch at home so it's definitely an option.

Ducky keyboards look shmick as well. Never seen them before. You must have worked really hard to wear one of them out.

I enjoy the steelseries keyboard, though I think the person who designed this particular model was on drugs... check out where the backslash\pipe isn't.  :undecided:

That's why I got it for free, it's incredibly frustrating to program with. Fine for mashing out forum posts though.

Haha yea, couple years of tweaking and coding could probably ruin just about any keyboard

Oh man you would definitely need to be on some drugs to mess that up haha. Would work out for forum posting but definitely not for programming, that would be a PITA.

I've lusted after these for years but have absolutely no use for it. I always intended on learning to code, basic stuff just to really understand how computers work fundamentally. I guess that's the point of why they were designed?

There's a lot of different things you can do with raspberry pi's even if you aren't a coder, and there's also a lot of different ways to learn to code with the rpi! I would highly recommend getting one.

I think they are just designed as a mini-computer. What you do with them is completely up to you. People think coding is "a thing". But it's not. It's many, many, many things that are related in some way. I don't really code, I'm a Linux admin, not a coder. Sure I do some scripting and the like, but that's something else altogether. Sure I understand a lot of what code says, but I don't go about trying to create it I just modify it for my porpoises.

Pi is great for Linux though. Linux is great for understanding how computers and networking works. It forces you to take it on in bite size chunks. Nom nom.
