Laughing Gym?
    #26425320 - 01/09/20 07:39 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat:
Greater Houston area. In grass, 1 - 6 feet from an oak tree.

Gills:
Attached gills from best I can tell. Light yellow. Irregular? Above/inside cap immature, hang below cap mature.

Stem:
Most 1-2" in length, largest are almost 1" in diameter. Same color as cap, yellow with brown/Orange streaks. Ring around stipe. Firm texture, moist

Cap:
Under 1" on immature, 2-3" mature. Convex on immature, flat/raised edges on mature. Color yellowish with orange/brown stripes.

Spore print color:Rusty orange

Bruising:
None observed.

Other information:
Close up pictures attached, I believe I got all the required angles. I did the spore print on an immature cap, cut off, over several days it still flattened out. I haven't been able to find any look alikes to the laughing gym it could be.

Definitely looks like Gymnopilus junonius to me. And best ID request ever created by someone under 5 posts. Kind of cool to see them growing in grass too. Is the oak tree dead?

Thanks so much for reply! Oak tree is alive. There are Live Oaks in another part of the yard ~150´ away that also have a small bunch of these guys growing
~1´ away. From all the pics I've seen they match, just want to be 100%.

I just thought Gyms only grew on dead wood, so maybe there's some other dead wood under the grass or something. Definitely wait for some other folks to stop in.

Looks like BLG to me.  Check pins and aborts for bruising .  Making tea with  fresh fruits is the best way I’ve found to avoid the bitter flavor.IMHO.

I saw some aborts but didn't photo, will check in the morning. I don't recall any bruising. That said, I've also read that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't psychoactive? Also I'd be interested in qtys to make tea for level 1, but I suppose that's for another thread/section. Appreciate all the info so far and welcome any others. Y'all are great!

Where in the world are you? Definitely a gymnopilus species of the spectabilis-imperialis clade.

No this is a laughing Jim

Nah but in all honesty I don't have much experience/knowledge about these. Does look similar. As was said before though from what I can gather they generally grow on decaying wood. The oak was live but did it look sick/decaying around the part they were growing on? I don't know if this even has to be the case though tbh so I'd definitely wait for a ti to chime in.

This clade of Gymnopilus often grows at the bottom of old and large oak trees, I've found them there many times before.

Is junonius also mycorrhizal then?

No, it's saprophytic, breaking down buried wood.

I's likely Gymnopilus junonius group, a lookalike would be G. ventricosus but I'm not sure if that species grows that far east; I don't believe it does

Some part of that tree is dead. Probably buried roots

:whathesaid:

This mushroom fruits terrestrially a lot more often than people seem to think, fruiting from buried dead wood

That makes sense, especially given the relatively close proximity to the tree.

150 g fresh should be. Level 1 ish. I found potency varies a lot with this species I usually try to do around 300g fresh for level 2-3 experience.
