Forums are dying

Maybe this is just my own experience and not reflective of anything. But I feel like it's not just the shroomery that is tanking. I remember a time where Reddit and 4chan were on the bleeding edge of both popular and internet culture. While they are both still used, I don't think the youngest people are involved anymore. It seems like Twitter and Instagram have almost entirely replaced that role in our society. You cant go a week without hearing about a racist tweet or some shit, but forums can't even get blamed for drug trafficking anymore.
What gives? Or am I just wrong and its as strong as ever and only this site has lost popularity?

Forums are more of a "on the internet" type thing. Being "on the internet" is a sitting in front of a PC/Laptop thing. Yes, most people with phones don't open up a web browser and start going to all their sites. If there's a site they were gonna use it, it's probably already an app. Forums are such a niche thing that if you're a part of the niche, you're also a person that uses a PC/Laptop to be "on the internet".
If you're following a link somewhere on your phone, it was probably found on a website like Facebook.. Instagram, etc. That's like the jumping off point for phone users.
Hopefully what I'm saying makes sense. It's just that there aren't as many Desktop/laptop internet surfers these days in comparison to the amount of "cellphone surfers". I'm glued to my PC 12+ hours a day, and will go several days without even touching my phone so I don't really fit into that niche. ".com" anything is dying, because everyone is using apps now.

Forums are sadly a dying artform of communication. Perhaps its too outdated for the young people out there.
HOWEVER, Mushroom Cultivation is a very active forum, so for information/learning/teaching situations, its still very much relevant!

I strongly disagree. Reddit is very different, since it's essentially a generalized discussion board for any topic out there, whereas Shroomery is a much more focused forum, that is unlikely to attract the general population, which is what reddit does.
Additionally with the explosion of social media[ most people are on facebook, instagram, or twitter for the online social interaction, and forums as a whole are a dying form of communication. I think there will always be forums, but going forward many forums I think will have a decrease in traffic.
So I don't think its accurate to say that the Shroomery failed, just that as with any forum, the internet has changed, and so have the websites and applications that people use.

I think it's probably a result of falling computer ownership combined with lack of computer skills as a result of falling ownership. To be honest I really don't mind it, things were crazy and not good there for a while.
I remember when the internet was tiny back in the mid 90s, and I wouldn't be sad to go back to that era. It was probably the best time the internet ever had.

Depends on the forum, those that are updated and have apps are thriving. Reddit for example, I don’t use it much but it has a app and gets a ton of traffic. This forum is pretty out of date, posting pics from a phone or a tablet is a pain. I get the appeal of using social media. I’ve been posting my hot peppers and other hobbies on insta and facetube more than forums myself.

I like it the way it is.
I used to be on Totse back in the day and just prefer this type of style.
I don’t fuck with reddit or Facebook. Hardly even IG.
Edit:
I do wish it was easier to share videos on here directly. And not have to upload them on YouTube or whatever and link from there.

Yep. It's all due to the way they design their apps and websites. They design them to be addictive

I realize reddit is huge and therefore generalizations are silly, but I have been on a few drug subs that seem populated by teenagers who know very little about drugs. I would be cautious about which information you listen to there.
Also I can't name a single user there, the shroomery you actually meet people and and recognize names and sort of have a better idea of who is who. For instance i check the RC vendor reviews an have no idea who is a legit consumer and who is a fake account to promote their own operation. I read a review and have to research someone's posting history to try and guess if they are legit. I trust people here way more.
I don't know if forums are dead, like every niche subject has a forum. No matte how small or specific. Its actually a great way to get information from people who experts on the most specific shit you had no idea there was a community for. Its easier to find info on a board than a facebook group too

Forums for life. Bump to keep Shroomery alive.
Edit: in all seriousness though, the internet is just getting dumbed own. It gets less useful every day as resources get buried at the bottom of search engine algorithms or get taken down by governments/corporations/interests/lack of funds and communities die and devolve.
That's why we got to hold on to the light that we have here I guess...but in all honesty the internet is now much less a thinking man's tool and more of an immediate gratification machine. I guess it's time to gather up, organize, and print all the resources you can muster from it and keep them safe and go back to finding truth in the woods...

Forums aren't dying, interest waxes and wanes for all things. Forums are thriving, Reddit is a great example. I've been saying for years that even Facebook isn't much different from a forum. People use forums, they just need a reason to. Reddit in particular is so large we probably lose people to them just because people trust them as a resource. But as Reddit gets shittier and legalization only getting closer, the best I can say is hold on to your asses because eventually this place will be so busy that we will need another forum just to deal with the bitchy pubbers who are getting lost among the traffic

Psychedelics warrant (in todays world) a niche response and sensitivity that you wont find elsewhere.
My foray Into the forum world was born of an experience that just could not be shared elsewhere.
I cannot see that changing anytime soon.

I took a, what, 7 year hiatus from the Shroomery? It's dying. I came back specifically for the cultivation aspect, but the Pub is definitely not what it used to be. And that's ok. Those who wish to keep providing content will do so and the rest will move on.
The Shroomery is still a special enough place for me to visit, and it's provided me so many great memories and I've met so many awesome people over the years. I mean shit, I went to a gathering in Vegas and had the time of my life.

It is. And it's inherent to what it is, too.
Shroomery caters in terms of its subject matter primarily to a fairly young age bracket, let's say 18-25. These users are the most likely to move wherever new technology takes them. They went to Facebook when that came up, to Reddit, then on to Snapchat and Instagram, etc. Looking at the few forums I frequent, I see that the ones that are doing well are the ones that cater inherently to an older demographic, which tends to coalesce with the focus of these forums. In my case, analog/film photography and vacuum tubes but surely there are other examples. Subject matter that is popular among old-timers who have at one point gotten the hang of forums when they came up and they don't really feel like relearning other communication styles as new platforms pop up.
I remember a few years ago there were fairly widespread calls on Shroomery to implement some kind of mobile interface; this was around the time tapatalk came around or maybe even a tad earlier. For understandable reasons, administrators resisted this, arguing that the technical capacity wasn't there to undertake the effort and pointing at the convoluted and difficult to change architecture of the Shroomery (essentially running on a heavily modified version of a proprietary CMS). I think that was basically an implicit (and perhaps unanticipated) decision to let this thing run its course and die off eventually. In any case, I myself felt it was a decision that impeded any future potential of this place.
Frankly, I'm surprised it's still here and attracting some traffic, but comparing to what pops up now, especially in the Pub, compared to a decade ago, today's content is a far cry from what it used to be. Which makes sense; if you basically are very good at catering for a specific group of people and don't have the ability or infrastructure to attract a new generation, then you're essentially stuck with that specific audience while you sit and wait for it to wane. And wane it does; people grow up, make families and lose time and interest in whatever happens in this place, and sadly enough some even meet an untimely fate in the hands of the scythe man.
But as the song goes: it's all right, it's all right now.

first off, what does "dying" mean?
It implies an ending or failure to exist anymore, at least to me. And no, I don't think that's happening. Associating exponential growth with success is at the root of this IMO.

Very well put. I registered in July of '04. I had just graduated high school and the internet was really taking off. I was 18 then. I'm fucking 34 right now. Thirty four. It was so different back then.
I don't see the Shroomery ACTUALLY dying, but definitely losing popularity. The cultivation aspect of it is unmatched and will always be a thing.

I think we've got a similar perspective; I joined in 03 and I was in my early 20s back then. I suppose you also look for different things at that age. Still, it's a pity this place doesn't "do it" for me anymore. Used to be inspiring to read the huge variety of topics being brought up here, but now it mostly seems inane banter. Much less about how society works, personal development, science or even somewhat reasonable discussion of religion and spirituality. I mean, trolls and harsh posters have always been around, as have the mindless jokers and nihilists, but even they seemed more involved a decade ago. I can't quite make out what has changed more - me, or this place. It's a bit of both for sure, but the change in this place seems quite significant, and definitely for the worse.

I've been on a few forums and the good ones always develop groups and cliques. One time in particular, a subforum of folks actually just made their own forum. We all pitched in to keep it running, it's still used from time to time after 12+ years or so. When we splintered off though, the site seemed to wane. It recovered, but was never the same. The shroomery's problem is that too many people wanted their little corners of the internet with their internet friends, and folks only have so much time to give. How many IRCs have there been? Or the discord? It's all people who used the shroomery to get something else, and don't really care to give back or put their faith back in to the place that gave them the things they appreciate . Eventually those people will be replaced, but it's just a big wound on the community every time someone wants to take members and go somewhere else. Or someone gets banned. The place ain't dead, it's changed. Seasons come and go. It might be a little wintery right now but spring is on its way

I mean, vinyl records are increasing in popularity, anything is possible. But some things do die. When was the last time someone made a new variety show like from back in the 60s?
And even when things don't die, they often become so different as to be nearly unrecognizable. I adore old blues, like I'm talking 30s era blues. Nothing made today really strikes my fancy, it's all funk-fusion or jazz-fusion or whatever. The shroomery by essentially definition cannot evolve. It's owned by one man who doesn't even make a living off of it. Sometimes I wonder how often Ythan has considered just throwing in the towel. Which could mean selling it, but whoever bought it would almost certainly change it a bunch.
The main theme I seem to be getting from you all is that there are just so many options. When Ythan started this in what, 97(?), there was probably literally nowhere else to find accurate info about drugs. Erowid came along soon after but it was more of an enclycopedia than a forum.
If you look up "Shroomery" on urban dictionary, the first result is just mocking this place. Maybe it really is only this site and everyone is just distributed more evenly throughout the internet.

I wanted to leave the pub
But I like it here , enjoy everybody here
This place gives me good ideas and it makes me more creative
I'm happy that I can be myself here
It makes me laugh
It shows me a slightly different side of myself
A side most will never know
It's not all a big day vs night difference but I dont joke with people out there
Even if sometimes someone messes with you
if they do mean it
I wouldn't take it so personal
All of the people who dont care for me so much
I've grown to really appreciate them
if they never came around again I would probably get sad

I looked it up and the first entry is positive and has 3863 thumbs ups and 153 thumbs downs. The negative one has 47 thumbs ups and 3561 thumbs downs. Both were added prior to the 2010s.

Another thing that really hurt forums was when photobucket hijacked everyones photos. Years and years worth of glogs, photo tutorials ect where broken and unviewable. I believe eventually photobucket changed the settings so the pics were viewable again but for a good few months a lot of sites were basically crippled

Hm, those numbers are extremely suspicious haha. I didn't even know there was a thumb system, it's just what came up when I googled it

magicschoolbus said: Forums are more of a "on the internet" type thing.
Its funny you say that cos I have been on mobile since registering lmao. I am mobile exclusive, I even had to have asante change my profile pic for me once hahaha

If making a mobile friendly version of the shroomery through a service like taptalk is limited to the issue of the shroomery using a custom CMS, I think there is definitely some options out there which dont require a rework of the shroomery architecture.
I just inspected some of the requests sent back when you load a page, and I think it would be entirely possible to have an "alternative" frontend for the shroomery that is usable by something like taptalk, which simply proxies requests to the main shroomery website, or backend.
If shroomery admins don't have the time for something like this that's understandable, but perhaps community members could help out? I've got a lot of time on my hands and would be more than happy to help. I do a fuck ton of backend service development but very little frontend work.

This is my second Shroomery account as I lost the password and recovery email (after a hiatus I forgot email and forum passwords) to my first one. But I have been visiting this site for well over ten years. I don't have facebook, don't use insta or have a reddit account. I'll never stop using these kids of sites. The internet for sure is changing but that doesn't mean this format is finished. The fact it's still here is evidence of that. I'd never put any psychedelic content on social media, this is our home.

Honestly I think it's even like this with my generation which was the last generation to be born without social media. Ever since I completely left social media (facebook, instagram, etc..) I feel so disconnected from my peers, and have an extremely hard time keeping in touch with peers, finding out what's going in their lives, etc...
Personally I like the quality of interaction of Shroomery over any place I've been to on the internet.

I kinda like that shroomery is not at the forefront of the newer generation just for the simple fact you know a handfull of those little fuckers would fuck the whole thing up for all of us, let reddit take them

Until a single subforum does as well as mush cult we have too many subforums.
There are enough subforums that hold 15ish people at a time that if you added them up they would = mush cult (usually about 200 viewers on average currently). They made us too separate back when site traffic was a thing and never adjusted back after all the subforums were dead.
I also think that keeping the growery on this side of the site would help us to stay relevant since people dont usually come here for ganja anymore

I think there's a multifaceted issue, the environment that allowed forums to thrive long ago has changed, and with it things like reddit/IG/FB/Twitter have an easier way to get in front of people's eyes. Years and years ago phones didn't see as much use as they do right now.
Like a lot of other posts here are saying, Shroomery doesn't have any kind of app or mobile integration afaik, and thus if you don't have a PC then the usage of the site is going to be much more difficult.
So with things like general forums that don't have a niche to hold on to, well they were just replaced with other platforms that had much better ease of use and larger audience. With Shroomery it's such a powerhouse when it comes to this one specific topic, and thus it's able to maintain it's numbers and even grow in recent years. It's nice to see honestly.
More than anything else, it just seems like a symptom of a changing landscape, but Shroomery seems like it isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

But about 90% are guests so....no posting from them

I used to rule the boards Shrooms would rise when I post the words Now in the moment we romp alone Hide the threads we used to own
I used to roll the rice After 24 hours in ice Listen as the members would sing Now the contams are dead, long live the pins One minute I held the key Next the mods closed in on me And I discovered all my upvotes stand, upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Shroomery bells ringin Grateful Dead cover bands are singin Be my mirror, the board's shield My shitposter in a butthurt field For some reason I cant explain, I know Ythan won't call my name
Never an angry troll But that was when Shroomery ruled the world..

The only reason why I'm here on this earth is because of mushrooms
My grandfather used to walk all day all night through the mountains picking mushrooms
Stories of planting seeds in war prison , working for food
They used to only eat mushrooms grass and dandelions for a long time
When my father was a kid he used to pick them too
They lived in a litte tin shack up on some hill
Sold the mushrooms on the side of the road , all kinds
There is more to this story
My father told me he found a snake with lips and eyelashes near some stream of rushing water
It moved around dancing at him
He beat it with a stick
No one believed a word he said
Until about 3 other people found it
It lives in a tree trunk
One day I will find it on video tape
It is stright from hell
Some people cant find any mushrooms and they are everywhere
Some guy from Germany at a pub was amazed

Also I can't name a single user there, the shroomery you actually meet people and and recognize names and sort of have a better idea of who is who. For instance i check the RC vendor reviews an have no idea who is a legit consumer and who is a fake account to promote their own operation. I read a review and have to research someone's posting history to try and guess if they are legit. I trust people here way more.
I don't know if forums are dead, like every niche subject has a forum. No matte how small or specific. Its actually a great way to get information from people who experts on the most specific shit you had no idea there was a community for. Its easier to find info on a board than a facebook group too
This
Although I am on reddit most of the time these days, you're spot on with the recognizing names and knowing who's who and all that... I like that.
And the drug subs on reddit, I agree for the most part, but if you go to r/drugnerds you will absolutely learn a thing or two.. There are some other really good subs dedicated to various drugs and psychs out there as well, just can't remember the name of any right now or I'd point you to them... But The straight up r/drugs I just unsubscribed, it really does seem like a bunch of teens talking about how fucked up they got last night.
Are forums dead though?, I don't think so either.
Don't get me started on the facebook groups though, they are fucking cancer.

Shroomery failed.
The Shroomery could go offline forever tomorrow morning and this place would still go down as a rousing success
Thing about the many thousands and thousands of people who came through here over the years
And all the countless aspiring mushroom cultivators that learned to do just that because of this place

Cool song/poem Dylan.
All we need is to record an instrumental, record the lyrics and we got a hit

I remember back in my early cultivation days ('04) how hard it was to find some supplies. The internet in general was such a different place back then. The Pub actually felt like a chatroom with how active it was.
It's also pretty crazy how much information has changed.

Pictures even sucked back then too, and it shows on older posts. I remember having to use my digital camera then connect it to my computer, transfer, upload, etc..
Now it's just, "ok tap upload, files, recent, bang" Cell phone wifi and gigabit internet is bananas.

Your father was probably tripping out, and attacked a snake that was just trying to get away. That would explain the snake's lips, lashes, and dance moves...

Yes maybe
It's honesly how they made money and I seen that tin shack
Love the culture in Italy , it's south not far from Sicily
Love the old people , they hate tattoos and weren't sure about me
Told them they mostly all relate to Italy and geometrics
Told them the stories and what they all mean
Now they love them , they want to look at them everytime I'm there
They will be like take your shirt off

All I'll say is that the Shroomery better not fucking die. I only joined recently and this is the only forum where I feel I can communicate with real people with sincere thoughts unlike 99% of the internet where people have basically become NPCs pinging each other in memespeak.

Stories of planting seeds in war prison , working for food
They used to only eat mushrooms grass and dandelions for a long time
When my father was a kid he used to pick them too
They lived in a litte tin shack up on some hill
Sold the mushrooms on the side of the road , all kinds
There is more to this story
My father told me he found a snake with lips and eyelashes near some stream of rushing water
It moved around dancing at him
He beat it with a stick
No one believed a word he said
Until about 3 other people found it
It lives in a tree trunk
One day I will find it on video tape
It is stright from hell
Some people cant find any mushrooms and they are everywhere
Some guy from Germany at a pub was amazed
.... Bothriechis schlegelii.... They do exist

Hmm
The topic is “forums are dead” and there’s 6 pages of replies... It would seem that this thread is an oxymoron.

Sorry for this stupidity of mine
Yeah I left out that he said it also whistled at him
like the screams you hear in the wind
That's all they used to do , walk aboard in mountains
He remembers every area
abandoned destroyed churches and building around
Everthing is ancient and pretty much uncivilized / unorganized
Bunch of littel narrow roads
Anytime we go hunting it's around 4 am start out in the pitch black
With dogs or wolves howling and barking for miles down hill , on end
Everthing goes silent
Than one dog startes howling or something
It all starts up again like a pack of zombies
They are either wild or only for hunting
I was there a few months ago
Couldnt sleep so I watched the sun rise over the mountains before it came up all I could hear was owls or some animals
The sounds they make it sounded like the english words ( you have adapted you have adapted ) they would all call that
I like that there is no tim hortons or mc Donald's around every corner over there , non at all
It's just like real in my eyes , it's not plastic , not that part
