In general I absolutely agree, OP. However, I'll always frequent forums; they're the ideal for my form of expression and personal convenience. Reddit is shit. Shroomery will always be here.

Correct me if I'm wrong; but I don't feel like you get the same sense of community outside of message boards/forums.

I've been a member of many and there's always that sense that you're hanging with a bunch of old friends once you've been on them a while....

It will only destroy what you are not.

Forums aren't dying, interest waxes and wanes for all things. Forums are thriving, Reddit is a great example. I've been saying for years that even Facebook isn't much different from a forum. People use forums, they just need a reason to. Reddit in particular is so large we probably lose people to them just because people trust them as a resource. But as Reddit gets shittier and legalization only getting closer, the best I can say is hold on to your asses because eventually this place will be so busy that we will need another forum just to deal with the bitchy pubbers who are getting lost among the traffic

Psychedelics warrant (in todays world) a niche response and sensitivity that you wont find elsewhere.

My foray Into the forum world was born of an experience that just could not be shared elsewhere.

I cannot see that changing anytime soon.

Thank goodness for the shroomery and long may it continue.

I took a, what, 7 year hiatus from the Shroomery?  It's dying.  I came back specifically for the cultivation aspect, but the Pub is definitely not what it used to be.  And that's ok.  Those who wish to keep providing content will do so and the rest will move on.

The Shroomery is still a special enough place for me to visit, and it's provided me so many great memories and I've met so many awesome people over the years.  I mean shit, I went to a gathering in Vegas and had the time of my life.

It is. And it's inherent to what it is, too.

Shroomery caters in terms of its subject matter primarily to a fairly young age bracket, let's say 18-25. These users are the most likely to move wherever new technology takes them. They went to Facebook when that came up, to Reddit, then on to Snapchat and Instagram, etc. Looking at the few forums I frequent, I see that the ones that are doing well are the ones that cater inherently to an older demographic, which tends to coalesce with the focus of these forums. In my case, analog/film photography and vacuum tubes but surely there are other examples. Subject matter that is popular among old-timers who have at one point gotten the hang of forums when they came up and they don't really feel like relearning other communication styles as new platforms pop up.

I remember a few years ago there were fairly widespread calls on Shroomery to implement some kind of mobile interface; this was around the time tapatalk came around or maybe even a tad earlier. For understandable reasons, administrators resisted this, arguing that the technical capacity wasn't there to undertake the effort and pointing at the convoluted and difficult to change architecture of the Shroomery (essentially running on a heavily modified version of a proprietary CMS). I think that was basically an implicit (and perhaps unanticipated) decision to let this thing run its course and die off eventually. In any case, I myself felt it was a decision that impeded any future potential of this place.

Frankly, I'm surprised it's still here and attracting some traffic, but comparing to what pops up now, especially in the Pub, compared to a decade ago, today's content is a far cry from what it used to be. Which makes sense; if you basically are very good at catering for a specific group of people and don't have the ability or infrastructure to attract a new generation, then you're essentially stuck with that specific audience while you sit and wait for it to wane. And wane it does; people grow up, make families and lose time and interest in whatever happens in this place, and sadly enough some even meet an untimely fate in the hands of the scythe man.

But as the song goes: it's all right, it's all right now.

first off, what does "dying" mean?

It implies an ending or failure to exist anymore, at least to me.  And no, I don't think that's happening.  Associating exponential growth with success is at the root of this IMO.

Very well put.  I registered in July of '04.  I had just graduated high school and the internet was really taking off. I was 18 then. I'm fucking 34 right now.  Thirty four. It was so different back then.

I don't see the Shroomery ACTUALLY dying, but definitely losing popularity.  The cultivation aspect of it is unmatched and will always be a thing.

I think we've got a similar perspective; I joined in 03 and I was in my early 20s back then. I suppose you also look for different things at that age. Still, it's a pity this place doesn't "do it" for me anymore. Used to be inspiring to read the huge variety of topics being brought up here, but now it mostly seems inane banter. Much less about how society works, personal development, science or even somewhat reasonable discussion of religion and spirituality.  I mean, trolls and harsh posters have always been around, as have the mindless jokers and nihilists, but even they seemed more involved a decade ago. I can't quite make out what has changed more - me, or this place. It's a bit of both for sure, but the change in this place seems quite significant, and definitely for the worse.

I've been on a few forums and the good ones always develop groups and cliques. One time in particular, a subforum of folks actually just made their own forum. We all pitched in to keep it running, it's still used from time to time after 12+ years or so. When we splintered off though, the site seemed to wane. It recovered, but was never the same. The shroomery's problem is that too many people wanted their little corners of the internet with their internet friends, and folks only have so much time to give. How many IRCs have there been? Or the discord? It's all people who used the shroomery to get something else, and don't really care to give back or put their faith back in to the place that gave them the things they appreciate  . Eventually those people will be replaced, but it's just a big wound on the community every time someone wants to take members and go somewhere else. Or someone gets banned. The place ain't dead, it's changed. Seasons come and go. It might be a little wintery right now but spring is on its way

I mean, vinyl records are increasing in popularity, anything is possible. But some things do die. When was the last time someone made a new variety show like from back in the 60s?

And even when things don't die, they often become so different as to be nearly unrecognizable. I adore old blues, like I'm talking 30s era blues. Nothing made today really strikes my fancy, it's all funk-fusion or jazz-fusion or whatever. The shroomery by essentially definition cannot evolve. It's owned by one man who doesn't even make a living off of it. Sometimes I wonder how often Ythan has considered just throwing in the towel. Which could mean selling it, but whoever bought it would almost certainly change it a bunch.

The main theme I seem to be getting from you all is that there are just so many options. When Ythan started this in what, 97(?), there was probably literally nowhere else to find accurate info about drugs. Erowid came along soon after but it was more of an enclycopedia than a forum.

If you look up "Shroomery" on urban dictionary, the first result is just mocking this place. Maybe it really is only this site and everyone is just distributed more evenly throughout the internet.
