Film by Louie Schwartzberg - The Magic Beneath Us - Shrooms really can save the world
    #26424530 - 01/09/20 12:13 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I found the press release and trailer for a new film on the benefits of shrooms of all types and the positive effect they can have for consciousness and renewal in the world:

Fantastic Fungi:

Documentary trailer:

Website:

https://fantasticfungi.com/

"Imagine an organism that feeds you, heals you, reveals natures mysteries and could help save the planet today."

More wide eyed mysticism on my part I suppose:

6 ways Mushrooms can save the world - a Ted talk:

Could these types of ideas be a part of something that changes our perception of how we align ourselves within the ecosystem of our world? Can we learn to alter our economic and social systems to better fit in to the health of the planet or is it too late?

First paragraph from an article on Graham Hancock's website:

"In the process of decaying, the wood releases its nutrients. Those nutrients become available to other organisms in the food web, including the fungus, which distributes the nutrients through the mycelium. After many challenges, these networks come to the surface and form mushrooms, the reproductive structures of fungi. Mushrooms are literally “the tip of the iceberg.” When we see mushrooms, there’s actually a vast network of mycelium hidden in the ground beneath them. Only about 10 percent of all fungi produce mushrooms. But when you pick a mushroom, you stand upon a vast, hidden network of fungal mycelium that literally extends underneath every footstep you take. These networks are the foundation of life. They create the soils that nourish all life on land. Without fungi, we do not have soil. Without soil, there is no life."

I saw the film in December at a special screening. The films entire second half is solely about psychedelic mushrooms while the first half covers a handful of non psychoactive mushrooms and their possible uses for healing, bioremediation etc.

It was a good film but it felt a bit too shallow.

Thanks for the review. I assume you probably know quite a bit more about mycology than the general public.

Maybe the shallowness was an attempt to get people who know little about shrooms interested in the subject..

At any rate, it is nice to hear from someone who has actually seen the film.

I saw that article on another site and thought it looked interesting.

I’m no Paul Stamets or RogerRabbit (our shroomery mycologist god) but yes, I know more than the general public.

It was definitely a film geared towards emotions. It centers mainly around Paul Stamets (but it features a lot of others like Michael Pollan, two John Hopkins participants as well as one of the guides). It was more of a “wow” film, the directing was great and the cinematography was astounding. But the knowledge was lacking. They quickly presented the idea of mycelium for bioremediation that Stamets has been studying, they go over how Stamets used Chaga or reishi (forgot which one) to help “cure” his mother of something (these parts weren’t all that memorable because they didn’t present enough information to really pull you in). They dove into Stamets mega dose psychedelic experience and then the remainder of the movie was all about the psychedelic mushrooms (which I think was the hidden agenda of this film). This part was done beautifully and listening to the John Hopkins participants on their psychedelic experience did bring tears to my eyes.

So that was my issue with it. It had an agenda that it didn’t want to come out and say (understandably so since psychedelics are still looked at as “hard drugs” by the ignorant).

Anyway my take was this
Beautiful cinematography/directing
Good narrating (Brie Larson)
Well Paced
Exciting topics and discussion
Emotionally moving

I think it’s a decent movie. A great movie to introduce to people NOT into mycology/psilocybe mushrooms because it gently eases them into these things and shows the the beauty behind it.

The producers were at our screening and did a Q & A. They themselves basically said that the movies objective was to present the astounding benefits and possibilities of the psilocybe mushrooms.
