Why are my jars contaminated only after shaking?
    #26419961 - 01/06/20 08:13 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hi guys, I just flushed my first batch of shrooms which weren’t a total failure. 2 of 4 tubs got contaminated but I still got a whole ounce dry so it could have been worse. Anyways the first batch of jars I was inoculating, I left in a clean tub with the lid on and no holes. I shook them once a week to mix them around to spread the mycelium. Now I’ve made another 9 jars. At first they were all fine until, I started shaking them up to mix them. Then they started growing large amounts of black stuff in side so I threw them. I had about 3 left. They were growing mycelium fine, until I shook these ones up and now they are starting to go black also. Should I leave them in a tub with the lid again to prevent containment’s? Why are they only starting to fuck out when I shake them to mix the grains?

Grain jars need FAE, put some holes on the lids and fill/tape them with something (cotton wool, micropore tape etc.). The mycelium suffocates in a closed jar.

Contams need time to develop, there might be no connection with shaking, or shaking might just sped them up not *caused* contamination. Since there are no holes, no contamination could get in. (Right?)

The problem with your jars is not where you are storing them. I store my colonizing jars on a shelf in a room. When grains dont recover after a shake, it means contamination is present. Whatever you inoculated that jar with was contaminated with mold. Other potential problems include improperly sterilized grains, or the filter on the jar is diffective.

Spore syringes are considered failry dirty.  It's best to put it to agar to clean it up and then transfer it to grains.  A SAB works fine for agar work.  Check out this tek for agar dishes and prep
