Instant Pot really works! 1

Hello All, this is my first post ever and I just want to share my experience.
I tried spawning using popcorn for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it's working out great so far. I used 8oz jars with yellow popcorn. I used an Instant Pot Lux model and PCd for 110 minutes. I let them sit for 4 days and saw no contam. So I inoculated them about 6 days ago and I am starting to see some mycelium growth finally. I might have left too much moisture in the kernels, which is why it is taking some time to see the growth.
The point is, Instant Pot works for sterilization IMO....

Funny I was just going to ask this. I wasn’t planning on starting my bulk substrate for a few months, but my GF randomly brought home a cheaper pressure cooker. I was skeptical, it’s an ambiano brand (compared to a instant pot from what I read.) I was concerned it wouldn’t have enough PSI. I read that RR made one that only gets up to 2PSI and it works. Share updates with us?

I’ve used one for all my grows, never had a problem.
The only thing that’s a pain in the ass I doing one quart at a time, but that was fine starting out.
lol it was actually the best thing I bought for mushrooms, because on top of sterilizing shit it makes awesome food super fast and you can just throw it all in and hit a button.
Got chicken rice and veggies cooking right now.

Not sure how well 2psi would do, but the Instant Pot we have gets up to 12psi. Will definitely be posting updates as things progress!

I've got one but never used it except to cook. From what I read, they only get to about 10 PSI which would kill some, but not all contams

I've used it for agar, 25 minutes on high without any issues. I wouldn't sterilize grain in it though... just my 2 cents.

This is what I started with. Did brf, popcorn, and WBS in it with success. Biggest complaint was the size. I have since gotten a large presto so now just use instant pot for cooking, but it will definitely work if that's what you got.

I've used one for over 100 jars. 8qt can for 4 qts at one time. I usually do grains for 3hrs to be safe. I still use it when I have smaller batches. Mainly use a 23qt Presto Induction now.

I just started my first grow two days ago. Im doing BRF cakes. I used an instant pot, on "sterilize" setting for 75 minutes. according to the instant pots user manual, that should be about 11 psi on high at about 239 degrees F. should that be good??? You seem to know what you're doing based on your signature pics lol.

Folks sterilize stuff all the time with just steam at no or low pressure all the time. Bod's sticky in getting started calls out you don't need a PC.
The lower your sterilizing temperature, and the greater your container volume factor in to make have to sterilize longer. I do 10 quart jars in a presto 23qt at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours, I don't know what 8 oz jars equate to, but I'm sure there's some data on here to tell one exactly how long they should at least be in there.
If it were me I would have felt better doing 2 cycles on your sterilize setting, TillerG.

You have a sterilize setting?? If it’s 11psi it’s gotta be for liquid. I bought mine thinking you could adjust the psi and was gonna take it back when I saw it was all presets, but I looked through the manual and found out chicken/meat setting goes to 15psi.
So I do that and change the time to 2 hours.
At 11 you’ll need to cook it much longer there’s conversion charts floating around. For lc or agar it should be fine, not sure about brf. I think half pint cakes would probably be ok, much smaller than the quart wbs I do.
But I’d look in the instructions to see if any settings go to 15, or check how long brf needs to cook at 11 psi.

I do three hours on the “manual” setting for the extra 2 jarsin a cases that don’t fit in my presto. Works fine but the most I could possibly fit in there is four and it’s mad inefficient. Dumb expensive too

For the small volumes that fit in a 6qt instant pot, a 120 minute cook is probably good for grain. I have 4 jars over a month old of rye, wheat, and brown rice that show no contamination. If you have one already, I say use it.

Yeah the brand is Instant Pot Duo Series 6qt. its got a bunch of preset buttons including a sterilize button. its just got two setting for pressure, low and high, says high gets up to 11.9. I saw somewhere online that I just need to add 7-15% to the sterilization time to compensate for the lower psi. But I also found a sterilization chart that shows at 11 psi its gotta cook for 200 minutes. So I guess I just gotta wait and see what happens with my 10 jars, really hoping I didn't waste a whole syringe lol. like I said this is my first attempt at growing.

Even for 10 jars you should have only used about half of the syringe. Each of them only need like 5 drops

I have the 8 qt. My sterilize function only allows for 30 minutes and won't increase any more. Do you run it for a couple cycles? Or am I missing something here?
