All right my friends...

2018 was an amazing season.  2019 proved a bit of a disappointment.  2020 is off to a slow start given that it’s january 8th and no one has posted any active finds...

I almost don’t want to break the seal with such a pathetic specimen but ladies and gentlemen I present to you, for the first time in 2020 on the Shroomery (in Florida lol), the elusive psilocybe cubensis.

Whatever, it's the first find of the year to the 2020 Florida season.  At least we didn't have to wait until February or March and I think the rain this weekend will kick it off nice for yall in the central/Southern area of the State. Maybe even in the panhandle if the temperature/humidity doesn't drop right afterwards.

Found me a new pasture to hit this weekend. I saw over 100 head of cattle in there a few weeks back, and methinks should be about ripe for picking now 🍄

I just moved to Florida in October and haven't found any spots to hunt yet but a TON of boletes pop up in the parking lot by my apartment. They don't use pesticides or anything so they're safe to eat and delicious. Pulcheroboletus rubricitrinus is so tasty.

That was the 1st time I've been to this place, hopefully, I can get back in.  The owner knows my mom and some of my acquaintances so it's a good possibility.

I only had time to check out one pasture quickly and the Panaeolus cyanescens were everywhere, but only saw 3 Ps. cubensis.

I spent the weekend in Tampa at an Ecuadorian San Pedro ceremony. That was my first ceremony, first drum circle, and first San Pedro in 20 years....FUUUUUUCK that was the most amazing thing I've ever done!!!! If any of you haven't been.....GO!!!!

Being my first time, I didn't know to bring an offering for the family. My friend didn't tell me that part...I felt terrible about it, and in the morning we all got to talking about mushies. I looked over, saw a herd of cows in the adjacent pasture, and offered to teach everyone how to ID cyans. We picked about ½oz and shared them among about 12 of us, had a nice low level mush trip, and enjoyed the morning until we were all good to drive again.

Thank you all for your help in my learning to ID cyans. I was able to share the knowledge with a whole group of people who will all be able to benefit from it for the rest of their lives!!!

Mush love everyone! :mushroom2:

That's what it's all about my friend, sharing the love.

Your friend deserves a kick in the junk for not telling you about the gift slash offering. PM me some information on this if you don't mind, sounds like it could be worth making the drive.

I agree that it sounds cool and welcome to the shroomery, I too was interested in this but I'm pretty sure that it would be considered sourcing and that's against the rules for obvious reasons :cop2:

whoops! I guess i should have changed the question to take the convo off site :/. Regardless thanks for the welcome , i hope to start (complete beginner noob btw) hunting soon but this cold front is killing my vibe :mad2:

I have a cow pasture literally walking distance from my house right next to the everglades, never looked there before 2 nights ago and really only found turkey tails on some trees, and some super small mushies on some dried up cow patties. Gonna go look again when its gets warmer for sure.

It's all good!!! When you hit the pasture focus on old turds because they never grow in fresh manure, only the aged stuff. If the temps are in the mid 50's and up it's worth looking.  I have found cubes when temps hit the 30's but they are small and seem to hug the patties and are potent AF.

san pedro ceremonies are done in a very closed circle among friends. it's not something you bring someone you just met to.  they are very clandestine.

Yeah... has mixed reviews. From my understanding they have a few dozen people at a time, so it's not a very personalized experience with lots of guidance for first timers. However, the staff is said to be very friendly. Take all of this with a grain of salt though, as I've never been myself... just what I read when I was looking into it a while back.

I've got an out of state friend coming from up north and so I'm going to be taking him out on Sunday morning, I believe this will be his first hunt in FL and I believe it's going to be memorable.  I'm going to bring some oyster plug spawn and my drill and inoculate some logs along a path I hike.  Will be fun and I will check on them and update him; this makes me remember I need to get some wax!!!

AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals

Will be attending this year, looking forward to seeing what I can find in the area, haven't hunted Gainesville but I know there's some nice spots down there.

1st time my brother and I have ever had the chance to spend this much time together, can't wait.

Anyone else going to the races?

Gainesville is good huntin when the weather is right.  Been really dry lately though.  It’ll rain but immediately after the humidity drops to 40% for a week straight.

gainesville is great for hunting! the weather is qterrible for hunting at the moment, though....i hit my favorite pasture and left with 3 cubes and a cyan after 2 hours. we need one good solid rainy day to get the conditions back on par.

pasture lands are the best bet actives,  cubensis and pan. cyanescens, Gymnopilus would be next, if you are around lake worth or palm beach  ovoidiocystidiata has been found.

yeah buddy!! florida is packed to the gills with cow & horse pastures. it is not hard to find a good one. any north of orlando-ish right now is dormant for about another month, where things slow to a crawl and you're lucky to find a handful of em. mid march, things should pick right back up full swing as long as weather cooperates.

Last year I had some of my best 200+ gram hunts in February.

This year has been awful.  Every time it rains it is immediately followed by weeks of bone dry weather.  Today is the second straight day of rain here so perhaps there might be some fruiting this weekend but I doubt it.  Need many consecutive days of high moisture to coax the mycelia out of hibernation I guess.

What’s going on?!?

I’ve been two three pastures within the last week looking for actives and it’s been bone dry.
I don’t understand because we had a rise in humidity and nice rain. The conditions seem right, I don’t seem to understand. I haven’t even seen non actives.

cubes don't just grow just because there's animals present. you're either not looking in the right pastures, or if it's that dry, it may not be raining at that particular pasture. florida weather is weird like that sometimes. find a pasture with good moist soil and lots of inactives...that's a good indicator fungus likes the growing conditions. start there.

Hey Kinoko,

Thanks for the reply.

I understand that cubes don’t grow just because there’s animal present. these fields are usually  filled with mushrooms inactive and active.  The conditions seems right that’s what I just don’t understand.

then you need to learn to be patient. we've had a long dry spell. thing take time to start back up sometimes. look for a different pasture that is producing in the meantime.

nice! i knew that rain would do us some good. i hit my favorite pasture the other night, and the owner had done massive construction...ripped down fences, cut down trees, and tore up huge sections of the field. guess i'm down my best pasture this year 😒

still waiting for some to pop up in my yard. i switched the donkeys and goats to a mix with oat several months ago hoping that would boost the production some. we'll see!!

Generally At The Beginning Of The Season The First Few Or So Good Rains Are Getting Things Ready By Moisturizing The Manure. Then Spores Germinate, Then Mycelium Grows & Thrives For Awhile, Then Sends Out Fruits.

The Season Is Very Early My Friend, Give It Some Time, Be Patient & Keep Looking, It Will Pay Off:cheers:

it depends on your recent rain pattern. if you've had a month and no rain, then a storm, you're not going to see much unless you get more storms over the next week or two. if you've had several storms over the last couple weeks and this is just another, i'd go out two days later. mushrooms don't grow overnight. they take about 5-10 days from pin. moisture evaporation produces pins. iow, rain, then dry a day or 2, then rain....and so on.

also, look for lots of inactive mushies. if you see nothing inactive from the road or fence, you're wasting your time looking for actives.

tampa is a great spot!! you should have NO problem finding anything....if you've had any of the weather i've had a couple hrs north of you lately, you should certainly be able to easily pull an oz or 2 in the right pasture. i prefer east tampa in cow/horse country, rather than coastal, personally 😉

There Are Many Ways To Get Into A Pasture.

The First Is (TRESSPASSING) :omgz:

Find A Pasture That Is Not Right Next To Any Main Roads, One Down A Dirt Road Somewhere.

Find A Pasture With Alot Of Tree/Bush Coverage, Not Just An Open Field.

Find A Pasture With Some Woods Running Next To It. Walk Through The Woods To Get In - Out Pasture.

Find A Pasture With A (Canal, River, Stream, Creek) Running Through It, Dress Up In Your Fishing Gear & Go Fishing, All The While Collecting Fungi.
You Could Even Kayak To A Pasture Through A Waterway.

(I DO NOT ADVISE YOU TO TRESSPASS) But..The Main 2 Things You Don't Want, Is Someone Seeing You From A Road, Or Someone Seeing You Out In The Pasture. This Is Why An Open Pasture With Roads On All 4 Sides Is Not A Good Selection.
Remember, Don't Dress Like A Hippie Or A Thug, Dress Like A Country Boy Or Nerd & You'll Be Fine

The Second Would Be (NOT TRESSPASSING)
These Are The Better Ways To Get Into A Pasture.

Ask For Permission. Don't Lie, Tell The Farmer/Land Owner You Study Fungi & Your Interested In Taking Pictures Of The Fungi That Grows On Their Land. Be Very Respectful & Know What Your Going To Say Before You Walk Up To Him/Her. Don't Stutter Or Say "Uhh".

Offer To Pick Up Trash & Other Debris, Offer To Do Some Chores, Offer Them 20$ Everytime You Come To Hunt, Offer Them Fish, Shrimp, Or Crabs You Catch, Offer Them Edible Fungi You Find On The Land, Etc...
You Could Also Buy Your Own Land & Your Own Cows. If You Have The Money.

Sorry This Got So Long, Im Bored.

Haha, I love it though.

Yeah, I think my first plan of action will be the asking permission. There are plenty of pastures around my area all within 30 minutes to an hour drive. And I'm pretty charming and look innocent, so that should definitely work in my favor.

My next question would be, it's supposed to rain the next 3 days 80% chance, and then the following 4 days isolated at like 40%chance.

If I go after the 3rd day of rain, will the field be too wet? Or should I wait until the end of the week/ beginning of next week to leave time for the fields to dry a little bit?

Hey thanks!!! It did take a month or so of scouting up and down from Titusville to Jupiter, going out a bunch of times before the mushrooms found me

i would wait 4-7 days after the first rain in the series, and then start hitting pastures every 3 days or so.

I have found them up to 14 days after as little as a 1/16 inch of rain, humidity is a major factor for fruiting, especially if temperatures reach the dew point at night and humidity is high during the day.

However, keep in mind that the largest flushes will occur within the first 5 days after rain but this all depends upon humidity staying up above 60%.

If more people will contribute to the data collection thread for this species we can get a much better idea of how they fruit.

If I'm lucky this week and find a pasture owner that will let me on their property, I'll be sure to input all the data!

I Knew They Could Fruit Without Rain, Because I Saw A Post Of Yours Showing Some Nice Cubes You Found From Just Dew & Humidity.

It Rained Pretty Hard Here All Day Yesterday & Some This Morning So I Went Out Not Too Long Ago, But Didn't Find Any.

The Ground Is Soaking Wet Though, So I'll Be Going Out Looking Damn Near Every Day.

Let us know how your search goes today! I plan on going out for my first hunt tomorrow, but probably can only go once or twice this week.

But I did find a field that I have access to without trespassing, so I'm really excited now!

That's awesome, be super respectful and expect people to approach you and ask questions,  I pick nonactives as well for when people ask questions I can show them the nonactives. Also,  pick up and dispose of trash, glass, nails, old horse shoes, etc. the owners will appreciate it and see that you are not a shitbag. I also bring a hammer and nails to mend fences while I hunt occasionally. There's always something to be done on a farm/ranch so when you get permission from the owner it's a good idea to pay it back and make some new friends.

I will be seeding a couple local fields in Seminole County, the cows need some spores.  I'm thinking of stuffing a bunch of spores into bread and places them throughout the field.  Apparently cows like stale bread so why not smother it in spores, inject it with spores, all the likes.    I went out last weekend and nothing, litterally two inactives.  We just got some heavy rain, and then some more rain.  I want to go out in an hour or two but I'm not going to; I've got to much work to do and I know it's going to be bare.  I will wait another week until this shit gets going nice.

I've almost legitimized my business and once that's done I'm making cards and I will be tALKING to every land owner, and I mean every landowner to ask for permission on their land.    I'm hoping 1 out of 100 say yes.

Good luck on your hunts yall!

EDIT:  I'm going to meet up with another member on here to go look for some edible gourmets, he said he has a reishi and an oyster spot.  If I die everybody hunt this mofo down.  I'm going to message his username to a couple friends just incase lol

yo newbie here, trying to find spots for my first hunt, been driving around Ocala area like crazy most spots are too open any suggestions on finding fields besides what has already been said in this thread? Also how would you contact landowners? I feel kinda weird driving down private long driveways onto someone's property, and then to go up and knock on their door. just paranoid as hell. was gonna just try my best to cultivate at home, but living under my parent still, it isn't so easy

Hey all, I found my first cubes!

In a pasture in the treasure coast.

Went for a walk, on the drive home decided to take a back road, saw some cows and pulled over to admire the cows.... welp there was a shining white object about 40 feet out and you know I had to scope it out. Made a dash and found these sweet babes.
Ended up with 36 grams wet. Just about perfect if ya ask me

Just spent an hour in my favorite pasture. No actuves that I found yet, but the trenches and mud are gone, the grass has regrown, and the antellarums are fruiting. I should be swimming in cyans in a week or 2!! 😁

Wish I could find a decent cube field, though...should be exploding right about now.

Looked in shaded forest area with dung and sunny pasture. Didn't find a single Cube. Only found non active Pan species.

I'll try again soon

Went out found two cubes, a handful of pan cyans, two or three cubes, some pan foes, some pan cincts.  My buddy hit a local field that hasn't been hit in years and found a plehtora of pan cyans.

I didn't have my mycology bag with me so i wasn't able to keep the samples seperate.  NExt hunt I'll share photos when I properly tag and identify.

gainesville 😁

here's a few rules...not theories...rules i swear by:
-DO NOT hunt populated/downtown areas....look in cow/horse country.
-NEVER park right next to the field in which you are hunting...parked cars draw eyes from passers-by.
-hunt in either private pastures which can't be seen from the main residence after 2am, or a commercial pasture DURING THE DAY on a weekend, in the rain....NO ONE WILL BE OUT!!!
-follow the antellarums!!!! if you can see something that looks like a cyan from the road, it's an antellarum. it WILL be habitable to pans and cubes.

should help some of you het where you need to be. 😉 good luck!!!

* some of this advice is seriously risky af!!!!! be prepared to run, defend yourself, talk your way out, etc, if you follow this advice. it is not necessarily the best legal advice, to say the least.

if you haven't been hunting this last week, you're making a MASSIVE mistake!!! GET OUT THERE PEOPLE!!!!! i'm pulling in 2oz every time i go out hunting, and in an hour my collection bag is FULL. i leave cubes in the field every single time because there are so many i'm actually just cherry picking the best ones.

head out of the city to cow country, bring a poncho, and hunt IN THE RAIN. NO ONE is looking what's happening in that pastures while it's raining. i'm finding cubes and cyans growing off the same damn patty in MANY cases, the weather has been so favorable here!!

the second pic caught my eye while driving by because there are soooooo many cubes!!!! i slammed on the brakes, pulled a u turn, snapped a pic, and marked my gps locaton. i'll be back for those babies!!!

Just Wanted To Throw That Out There, So You Don't Jump A Fence, Only To Find That The Mushrooms Are Just Non Actives

I've Never Seen Cubes Grow In Formations Like That. Not To Say A Few Of Those Singularly Growing Ones Aren't Cubes, It's Very Possible.

I See A Horse In The Pic So I Assume They Are Growing In A Horse Field.

yes,  Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens but next time please start your own id request thread instead of posting in a thread that specifically says no ID request.

Welcome to the shroomery, I look forward to seeing more of your observations.

I Agree With Psilocybe Cubensis & Panaeolus (Copelandia) Cyanescens, But The One With The Reddish Stem, That Does Not Bruise Bluish, Is Panaeolus Papilionaceus Or Similar

KinokoKomodo you’re the man!

:mushroom2:

Here are my finds after a 6 mile hike today in southeast FL. The first 4.5 miles there were no mushies in sight, but at last a gleaming white object caught my eye.
Turned out to be a perfect little cluster of Psilocybe Cubensis 46g wet. And 2 baby pans a little later.
Thank you mush gods !

P.s I bring a bag for trash along the way, always feels good picking trash as well as shrooms.
:peace:

if you haven't been hunting this last week, you're making a MASSIVE mistake!!!

That second pic is fucking incredible. Would love to see more pics of that spot.

If you are along the U.S. Gulf Coast anywhere,  now is the time,  it's been prime hunting for the past 2 weeks,  don't let it pass without getting your feet wet.

I literally just left my pasture and it was in full flush,  didn't have time to hunt the whole thing but it was definitely worth the effort.  I will post pictures when I get back but I managed to pick about 75 cubes in less than an hour.

hit a long red-light so here's some pictures. that paper bag is a large grocery sack

don't forget to submit a data collection sheet for your cubensis observations

They are all cubensis, it's waterlogged. the reason I hunt in the rain when it has been raining for several days because they will rot fast.

already gone, I donate them to friends whom are using them as medicine. We all started using them for fun decades ago but have learned their true value as medication.  I used to have terrible migraines until I started dosing again on a regular schedule and I can honestly say that they have almost disappeared completely compared to the several a week I had in the past. They have also been beneficial in treating my anxiety and depression, I get the same benefits from LSD but it's almost impossible to find,  only seen it around a few times over the past 30 yrs and that is only because someone living near big cities where it's more popular shares the love. Last dude here was named freaky Freddie and he just disappeared one day to never been seen or heard from again.  He always had the liquid 🔥 and when he left it never came back.

Yeah, I feel you on that. psychedelics are amazing for the mind and body.  I am shooting myself in the foot for using my last bit up on heroic doses.  Should have saved them for micro dosing. Honestly contemplating HBW again since nothing else is around my area rn.  They really should be legal even if it’s in a medical setting. You are an amazing friend for helping them out!  Putting the work in to pick them to give them away is commendable!

old manure is best, fresh is never good

edit: for the northern Gulf coast of the U.S every other day is perfect right now in my opinion. I haven't been paying much attention to Central and South Florida's rain fall but if it's anything like what we have had for the past couple weeks,  it's prime time.  This new tropical system in the Atlantic is going to keep it going, but I don't want it to get into the Gulf personally.

Yesterday was hot, but fun! Collected around 30g dry in 1.5hrs, all caps tapped vigorously, snipped carefully with scissors, and gills blown out.

Happy ride home!

Bittersweet... spent about 2 hours dodging mosquitoes and giving my shoes a fresh mudpie bath to finally stumble across the elusive cube. Unfortunately though, this 2g white whale was all I was able to find. Didn't even see any of the pan ants that I usually find all over the place.

Best of luck. Tell us what you find. Sandy hill is the habitat I believe.
This thread is really quiet this year. Anyone have an assessment of conditions and bounty lately?
SW FL curious...seems almost too wet out there now but haven’t been out in a couple weeks.

Very good signs indeed! I'm treasure coast area if anyone wants to hunt or forage. Super new to mycology and to the area, but I do photography and don't mind doing the talking to get field access. Or if anyone knows so good areas to check that would be great too. Happy hunting!

I am too, though probably a tiny bit south of you. I'd like some foraging buddies but my half blind ass can't drive

No worries there. I'll send a PM, maybe we can get a few members to come out for a hunt
