Greetings and Salutations.
Hope all is well.
Long time reader, first time poster.
I need some info please.
Just recently birthed 5 cakes for sgfc. All was going well until I found mycogone growing.. so, I threw them in the back yard...
What info I've found about it isn't as informative as I'd have liked.
Someone please tell me where does mycogone come from? I read somewhere that it could have piggy backed from my vermiculite...
Now that's an issue, cause when I roll my cakes, to help prevent a mess. I'll just roll my cakes in the verm bag.. I've been doing that for a while with no issues however now, I'm wondering if my bag of verm is tamed...
Someone please tell me where mycogone comes from, if it could piggy back off verm. And if my verm bag is now dead..
I have 3 more cakes pinning in jars but imm fearful on using my verm.
Thanks in advance. Will answer any questions yall may have.

How did you ID the mycogone? Not even experienced growers get that right all the time. You sure the bubbles weren’t blobs?
But either way, contams don’t come from verm. And no one will be able to tell you where the contam spores came from🤷🏻♂️ But we can help you eliminate problems that lead to contams. Describe your sterile procedure. How do you sterilize? What’s size jars? Filters? How do you inoculate? What did you use to inoculate?
P.S. poast Pics or this thread is destined to die on page 1.

Sterile tek..
Everything gets iso. Spray and wipe down all sides of sab. Placing Sab on table. All cups iso wiped and placed in sab. In fact all items get iso wiped and placed into sab. I use cling wrap over arm holes before use.
Once all items are in sab, give a few more sprays and let everything sit and await my presence....
...
Birthing...
I birth the cakes, washing lightly off with water, then roll the cakes in verm and place into sgfc. The tin foil is cut to as close as possible to the shape of the cake. The cake goes onto the tin foil, then into sgfc.
The sgfc was iso wiped down and lid before use. The perilite was hydrated and then added to sgfc.
.....
Id mycogone.
At first, I thought it was as you said, but then it started turning a reddish color. I read that amber red color was a clear sign. Once it started turning colors I tossed it immediately and iso cleaned everything. Walls in room, sgfc, everything.
I have no pics of the tam cakes. I was just looking for info about the verm. You answered my question about the verm. Now knowing that I'll move forward with the remaining 3 cakes.
...
Side question.
No matter what I do with sterile tek, I still see many tam plates. I'd say 1 of 4 tams up. Would a glove box opposed to sab work better for preventing tams?
Most tams happen on the side of the cups, that are opened for transfers.
I ask bc the info I find, some say glove box will help, some say it wont.
Thank you for helping me with this. Hopefully the info I've provided answers questions.

1 in 4 is not great. Are you using no pour plates\pastyplates? SAB can be extremely effective. Adding gloves means inducing air currents and defeating the purpose of a Still Air Box. Unless you were breathing directly into your still air box, there isn't going to be a difference in contams present between a SAB and glove box. Only difference would be the gloves stirring up the air. Neither of these methods are themselves sterile, they just provide a controled environment to work. It's up to you to keep contams out. If not using a surgical mask while doing lab work, that may be a good option. I used to subconsciously try holding my breath while working. Masks helped ease my mind as well as guard the SAB from my breath. If you are using no pours, there is a chance contams are coming from the no pour prep. The fact that you say the contams start from the side of transfer cups makes me think they are being introduced during transfer. Watch how much of you scalpel\tweezers overhang into the cup\plate when transferring. If cups are a bit deep, tilting it will help keep your fingers, hands, handle from being directly above the cup\plate. Try not to scrape the handle of blade\tweezers on the side.
I leave my plates unwrapped in my SAB for a week or more while waiting to be used with no issues. SAB are not the epitome of sterile work, but the are absolutely effective more than 75% of the time.
