Beginner - Need advice on optimal ingredients for PF TEK
    #26421047 - 01/07/20 01:03 PM (4 years, 22 days ago)

After some research on mushroom cultivation and different Teks I felt pretty intimidated so I decided to stick with Viran's PF TEK on the begginers section (https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24179086).
The post seems pretty clear and detailed, however I'm unsure of what types of vermiculite, perlite and brow rice flour to use and was hoping for any suggestions.

Side note: I could do with a lower maintenance TEK suggestion as I will struggle to consistently ventilate the tub through the day because I'm only home in the morning and evening.

Cheers

Any verm , fine grade preferred but not a deal breaker.
Any brown rice flour
And course grade perlite. Stick to the sgfc you only need to mist 0 to 3 times a day and no need to fan it

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

if you want lower maintenance don’t do PF tek and just go to shoeboxes or monotubs. the whole process is way easier and less time consuming. the only barrier of entry is buying a pressure cooker which right now I think amazon has a popular one for 40$

edit: it’s 60$ Presto 01781 23-Quart Pressure Canner and Cooker https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000BYCFU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_sxofEbE0SNB7P

You could even do it without a cooker if you make the pf tek jars then break them into coir.

I think shoeboxes are the best for beginners especially if you need a low maintenance option. As long as you prep the coir wet enough to start with you won’t need to mist at all, literally just put the lid on and wait.

I’ve only run a few cakes but I found them a lot harder to maintain than a tub.

Yeah sound. I was planning on buy a pressure cooker anyway and was initially planning doing a monotub method initially but, for some reason, struble to find a clear and upto date post. Any recommendation of what monotub methods to search for or maybe even a link to one? The only thing I was worried about with monotubs is increased chance of contamination when compared to PF TEK.

Cheers!

Yeah I feel like I don't need the volume that monotubs provide since I'll be mainly micro dosing a couple times a week. Any suggestions on a pretty simple and reliable shoebox method?

There’s a few good tub TEKs floating around, but the most important is the spawn. I did a bunch of syringe to wbs quarts and had good results, never lost a jar or a tub before getting at least one flush.

I think wbs is a good one to start with.

After that you just mix the quart of seeds with a quart and a half of coir in a shoebox and you’re done.

Def the most popular. Super easy if you can just get some clean spawn.

If you're going to do cakes i like to add water to my verm first and when it's mixed thoroughly I sprinkle the flour in as I stir. This gives me fluffy consistent cake mix instead of sticky clumps of verm. Also I've started using wheat berries and it's the easiest grain I've ever used.
