Any tips for someone looking to grow coca for the first time? My source for coca leaves is pretty expensive making it very uneconomical to consume coca tea, so I've been looking to get into growing it both to ease up the budget, and for a hobby to do that isn't related to my work.

How many leaves, or grams of leaf, can you expect from a one year old plant? Thanks.

Are these flower buds? This plant is very small about 6" so I wouldn't be expecting them this soon. But normally new leaves look nothing like this. They are generally spear shaped then they unfurl into leaves. Any input from people who hav had their plants flower would be appreciated. Is E. Novo self fertile. If so how you you pollinate it?

And update on my flowers. They've gotten bigger. I imagine they'll open in the next week or so.

And now the flowers have opened. I pollinated them so hopefully I'll get berries. But with this plant being so small I'd be surprised. Anyone know how long it take for berries to start to show? So I know whether it was a success or not?

Hand pollination was only minimally successful for me, I’d recommend repeating often while you still have flowers. Nothing seems to pollinate these plants as well as bumblebees. You’ll know in 2 weeks or so if you’ll get berries. Mine haven’t made any flowers since I brought them inside.
I’ve got some E. coca seeds on the way, I’m putting the nursery together today. Hopefully this will all work out. I really need to improve my winter setup for next winter, my novo are declining as expected. At least I’m getting several chews a week with the leaves that fall off.

That's really cool. Is this an explant culture you did yourself or a website that sells them?
Also i was wondering how long these guys stay in the seed coat. I germinated some 20 days ago and they are all still standing up in the seed. I have close to 20 seedlings so i decided to "carefully" force the seed coat off one of them with two pairs of tweezers.  After i got a piece off it reviled a thick endosperm. I have never seen a 20 day seedling so under developed. How long do those lil buggers stay in there?

I made it myself from a seed i germinated (not germinated in vitro, sterilizing seeds sucks so far imo)..
Just trying to see if i can do it and also maybe i can grow a plant better and bigger through its youth than i can out in the open. And also perhaps i can multiply some and offer em somewhere but its not really so likely it will routinely be worth the time. The practice is nice tho but i focus on cacti.

Hmm i am not an expert on the matter but i think its kinda good for them and for their forced vigor to fight off their own seed coat, and if they can't well i mean i have helped em before but maybe it is a sign that something is not quite so great. Genetics or conditions yknow..

Do you always use blue light?

I know it is for vegetative growth but it's not quite so simple especially when it comes to development, growth modes, signals and proportions.

Use full spectrum light for something like this or at least supplement it with a fuller more balanced spectrum because perhaps less red is giving you poor root development which doesnt give it the power it needs. I realize that it is probably still getting energy from the reserves but i mean still if you throw your development off balance i think it's easy to get some sorts of deficiencies and other imbalances leading to such problems.
possibly throwing off the seed coat relies on secondary growth.

This round i also had one where the seed husk stayed on but iirc it was clear that conditions weren't really optimal and all taken care of.

They were started under white CFL light only recently I turned on the " veg" spectrum LED I will turn on the " bloom" setting also.  I was just trying to save a lil on electricity.
Thanks for the reply your explant is really cool and one day I will gather the mediums needed to experiment. I love the idea of "artificial seeds" it will sure make genetics easier to exchange when the practice is more common.

Coca may be buzz pollinated, it's a special type of pollination that only bumblebees can do. They detach their wing muscles from their wings and use them to vibrate the flower so it releases its pollen.

My plants are looking like shit these days. They’re dropping leaves, which is expected I guess. I usually get some flowering in the winter, but not this time. I can’t wait until they go outside and start to flourish again.

Hey all, to answer my own question it takes about 20-25 days for the seed coat to come off after the seedlings are standing erect. My seedlings are in folded over filter patch bags in a grow tent with LEDs and and oscillating fan. First pic shows the moister second pic show my first real leaves.

Awesome man. I cant believe thats all they grow in 3 months. Im guessing they were kept under CFL the whole time? Have you fed them yet?  Is that a large stretch from the cotyledons to the first set of leaves. Or did you loose leaves?

Haven’t fed at all

Just under lights and a heat mat,

I’ve lost some leaves already,

I don’t even know what to feed them

Those to the right are the same age ,
Just never been directly under the lights,

I am by far not a coca expert but do consider myself to have a green thumb or two. I mean no disrespect but those guys that cannot stand up on their own are lookin weak.
Is there low to no airflow in that room? Are they in 100% moss still? I think they need a lil something more substantial. My first erys are just over 3 weeks now and I think i am going to give them a little 2-2-2 within a week or so

Is there a sponsor that sells e. novo seeds? I’m having trouble finding any.
