Anyone here ever buy a 3D Printer? 1

I'm thinking of buying myself a 3D printer towards the end of the month as a self birthday gift. I've been wanting one for awhile now, and lately I've been starting a bunch of pet projects in my spare time that a 3D printer would be useful for.
The first thing I'm thinking of making with it is this https://fossbytes.com/diy-raspberry-pi-recovery-kit-survive-post-apocalyptic-world/
Has anyone here bought one? Did you regret it? What did you make with it?

A user named madmodder owns one. He inspired me to get one.
Im planning on buying this model in the near future: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2018-Upgraded-Full-Quality-High-Precision-Reprap-Prusa-i3-DIY-3d-Printer-gI/254345373895?epid=2295800134&hash=item3b382a68c7%3Ag%3ASvIAAOSwONBZFAbz&LH_BIN=1
I haven't quite figured out what 3D software Im going to use yet.....
Ive been wondering about printing objects like a diamond. Does one side need to be flat so the object doesn't become unstable as its being printed?

That looks pretty cool I'll check it out. As far as I know I think one side needs to be flat yea for it to be stable. You could maybe print a mold of the object and print into the mold.
So if you want print a diamond shape, you could print a mold of the diamond with a flat surface, and then print the actual diamond into that mold.

Ah i see. Makes sense. I was also considering like a "half-diamond" idea of print half of it with the face looking up (sliced vertically) then printing another copy, then super gluing the two pieces together. But i like the mold idea better.
My friend modder just told me about "Thingiverse", a huge collection of cool, practical 3D models to print. Check it out: https://www.thingiverse.com/
Also just found this site called "Pinshape": https://pinshape.com/

Yea thingiverse is super cool, never heard of pinshape before but I'll get it out. Do you have any ideas about what you want to build for your first couple of projects?

Im gonna start small and simple like print a small pyramid for example, maybe even print out one of those "calibration tests". After that, going to print out some pendants or jewelry or gizmos like cell phone stands for example. Ive found some glow-in-the-dark filament online. Cant wait to play with that! I got a lot of great ideas for glow-in-the-dark, both practical and artistic.

Its a little more spendy but the practicality of it wins me over. Plus it looks awesome
Ive been looking up "keychain thingies". So many interesting ones. Some might be copyrighted thou, cant sell those. But a glow in the dark keychain thingy would be pretty nifty.
Another idea i got was printing unique chess pieces and try sell them online.
With 3D printing, the skys the limit!

Yea it seems extremely practical, one of the things I want to make is a computer case for my single-board computers, glow in the dark ones would be stellar, make it super easy to plug/unplug cables in the dark.
Keychain thingies are a really great idea as well. Thats one of the things I want to leverage 3D printing for is selling "stuff" on the side. 3D printing seems like a really easy way to capitalize on your creativity since you don't need tons of specialized tools and devices to make things.

Yeah, exactly! A custom-made computer case sounds awesome! I saw some custom-printed homemade "Gameboys" that used Rasberry Pi's and looked like the original Gameboy. Really cutting edge stuff.
Eventually I wanna get into custom designing. Found this cool review YouTube video of various Free 3D modeling software:

The only draw-back is they are cloud-based, so you need fast internet.
I just recently downloaded FreeCAD. Been playing around on it: https://www.freecadweb.org/
Its pretty complicated but it looks like pretty powerful software.

Ah yea that would definitely be a drawback then. Dont think I could do that at my house, canadian internet is so damn expensive for shit speeds.
FreeCAD looks pretty sweet, probably worth learning despite it being complicated, would probably pay off in the long run.
That mushroom lap looks awesome! That would be really cool, 3D printing your furniture and stuff like that.

Tinkercad is super easy to use and you can actually do some pretty useful things with it. I recommend fusion 360 for non organic things and blender or zbrush for organic. Feel free to message me with any questions or help. Been 3d printing for about 2 years. Honestly, I wish I would have just bought the prusa off gate. I learned a lot building my own but so many damn problems. The only issues I've had with the prusa are with the multi material/color unit. But it is awesome to print with different colors

The prusa mk3s is the one I'm currently eyeing. Should hopefully be pulling the trigger on later next week! First thing I'm thinking of doing is printing a case for my heltec's
Anything you'd recommend to try as the first couple of things to "print"?

I own a couple, they're useful if you know some basic CAD or just download other people's models.

I finally did it. Finally bought one.
Went with this genetric one. The design reminds me of when I used to be a mechanical technician at a manufacturing plant: https://www.ebay.com/itm/TRONXY-X3A-Auto-Leveling-DIY-3D-Printer-Kit-220-220-300mm-Size-Support-NEW/283722966136?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
Got this PLA filament variety pack. Hope it works out: https://www.ebay.com/itm/20-Colors-1-75-mm-PLA-Assortment-3D-Pen-Printer-Filament-Lot-Refills-Non-Toxic/173164858601?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
And this GLOW BLUE FILAMENT
Im sure you can guess what I got planned for that special filament.
Its gonna be a great journey into the world of 3D printing with various plastics. What an wild idea.
