Supposedly these can cause negative health effects, although I think only in immunocompromised individuals

Ok so I have two questions.
1. Why do some people post the ID template with no answers?
2. I know this species also occurs on the west coast, but is it common? I think it was the first species I noticed on my hillside (Santa Cruz Mnts, CA) in October. Interesting that Siegel and Schwarz consider it "Edible, but small and rather tough." More to the story??

Because when you select ID request as a category of new thread, this template appears automatically. But then they either don't know the details or just can't be bothered to enter them.
What I would like to know is why do people think a mushroom like this could be psychoactive?? Where did they hear this?? Is someone spreading misinformation? Or do they just assume any mushroom cozld be psychoactive? I'm afrid I'll never understand...

I guess most people can't be arsed to read the stickies on how to look for mushrooms and post adequate id requests.

The public's general knowledge of mushrooms is, in my experience, very limited, especially in western countries. When people think of mushrooms, it's often either the supermarket buttons or toxic species ("toadstools"). Or, as with many of the new members on here - the hallucinogenic ones. And that is often limited to knowledge of them, not so much about them - other than that they'll make you trip.
I can imagine that, without the basic knowledge of mushroom identification, being in the woods or wherever and you see lots of different mushrooms that don't resemble buttons or fly agarics, it might be tempting to believe they are hiding some "magic potential". After all, mushrooms have been shunned and shrouded in mystery in a lot of countries for a long time.
So it doesn't really strike me as weird when people make erroneous assumptions or carry some obvious misconceptions on the topic. After all, as myco-obsessed as we are in this forum, we're fringe outsiders.

It's interesting to me that we really are on the "fringe," and all we're doing is thoroughly enjoying an aspect of nature. I've been immersed in nature all my life - it has so much to offer. Every time I ride in the Santa Cruz Mountain here with my mountain bike group, I can't help but notice how few of my fellow riders pay any attention to the nature around them - the plants, the trees, the birds. When I jumped off my bike to observe a mushroom, one rider immediately pegged me as "looking for a high." That induced a hell of a discussion with everyone - I am working on these people; they need to witness the fringe!
Oh, and Log9... have we answered your question? Welcome to the Shroomery and thanks for posting! I've been wondering about this species - it's all around my hillside.

I think it's funny to watch people walk by huge flushes without noticing. Then again, the majority of the public walks around like zombies staring at screens.
