I got one of these off of eBay.
Dayton 1TDU2
It had a dent so the price was cheap. Works great with that filter. I use 2 layers of prefilter.

I'd recommend the 1TDT8, it has a high and low setting of 797 and 549 respectively... it also has a flange so it's easy to bolt to your hood. I ordered it from Zoro and was on my doorstep the very next morning, no shipping cost either.
This is the blower I'm using on the flow hood in my signature below. The filter is a 12x24x6 Flanders, and I'm pretty sure even with the blower on low, and with a mini HEPA filter blocking the intake, it's still overpowered. BIC flame goes out when I get around 6-7 inches in front of it. on High I can't even get it within a foot of the flow. I have yet to have any contams on 60 plates so far, however.

This is a little overpowered but as far as dayton blowers go its the best fit for 2x2, the 1tdt9 will work but be on the slow side and as filter age they produce higher S.P. So a hood built with a slightly overpowered fan will last longer before the filter needs to be replaced.
The 1tdu2 is what FP sells paired with the 2x2

Craigslist look for squirrel cage blower or furnace blower.
Find one that is a suitable voltage (115 or 220) thats around 1/4hp 1000rpm. That should do it for a 2x2 and will cost you anything from free to 50 bucks.
Clean it real good and paint it if you like. No need to drop the coin if you dont want to or cant. You'll need to tweak it a bit and test each of the variable speeds that most SC and furnace blowers come with but it's pretty easy

I've also got the 1TDT8 on a 24x24x12 Novatek hepa. I wired it wrong and it shocks me whenever I touch it but other than that it works well enough.
I've read that HVAC shops or scrap yards can be a great place to source nice used fans, alongside the usual adivce of craigslist, eBay, etc.

I'm sure you won't regret it. Just be sure to seal the back compartment behind the filter really good so you get mad airflow through the filter and not out the cracks of the box.

Does it matter where the blower is positioned on the box? i.e, does it need to be dead center in the plenum? My flowhood looks best when the blower's edge is 3/4" behind the hepa filter, so it's not centered in the plenum but much closer to the hepa. I'm worried that by having so much downward force so close to the hepa it might impact the horizontal flow through the hepa filter, but I don't know much about this stuff. Alternatively, the air only has one way to go, and that's out the hepa, so part of me also thinks the same force would be directed outward regardless of blower position. But if this is true, would the still be capable of being laminar?

@ your instincts are correct, Angle it slightly away from the filter or install a baffle of some kind to direct the air away from the filter
@OP Good choice, I have a 2x3 with that blower and its perfect so if you ever want to upgrade you can still use the same blower, I recommend building a box around the filter and putting a couple thick prefilters to bog that one down for a 2x2. The hood will last for a really long time that way as long as the box is big enough that the fan doesnt overheat. Make sure to leave plenty of extra space around it for air cooling. They generally heat the room up a few degrees either way though just fyi.

Thanks! I'll put a baffle together then before finishing her up.
Edit: I have no idea what a baffle is. Any tips on what this should look like in my situation? I may just KISS and go with the blower in the center of the plenum (is that the optimal spot, or should it be more towards the back?), I'd just have to do some rewiring then. And yeah sorry to threadjack! I didn't think it meritted it's own, but I've been unable to find any info on where to place the darn thing and I'd like to know before cutting into my top face of plywood. TIA

Haha its all good Iβm just teasing, best thing to do would be to angle it towards the bottom back corner, anywhere as long as it isnt blowing directly onto the filter, Across the filter may be less of an issue but Iβd personally avoid it.

pfff I have no idea, other than enough to pass the lighter test :^) I pencilled this all out before purchasing but that scrap of paper is long gone. I just know I've got a filter that works with my fan according to previous calcs. The prefilter is a 14"x14" pre allgergen filter.
Any tips on the blower placement though? Specifically, center of plenum vs closer to the back? I can't really angle this one too easily, it's got a flat mounting face (I could of course build some shim-like stuff, but that sounds like some work). I'm waiting on picking up a jigsaw then I'll get to it, I feel like the farther back the better, probably? Most examples I see though tend to be dead-center.

I didn't bother building a box around the blower. Didn't really see any reason. Its lighter (already really heavy) and can access the blower easily if something happens. I cut the prefilters to the size of the blower inlet and duct tapes them to the side.
I wouldn't try and angle anything. Just center it on the plenum. If that doesn't work for whatever reason, you can move it back some, but I wouldn't go left or right. You want an even flow of air. It probably doesn't matter, because the filter is supposed to decent back pressure. Thats why it takes such a big blower. The plenum has to pressurize before air will move through the filter.
