Strait coir or coir/verm mix is about as easy as it gets. Even some of the most experienced grows have been using it for years. More complex substrates required pasteurization and it can be a bitch to get pasteurization down unless u use a rice cooker. With coir u can literally add water and bring to field capacity then use. Itβs the most forgiving substrate there is and mushrooms love it.

Thanks AstroMan! so you dont have to pasteurise coir before use? I love keep things as simple as possible but have seen so many teks recommending H Poo, C Poo, Gypsum, ground coffee etc. Is there much need for this? Does it affect the quality/overall yield by a noticeable amount? (Sorry English is not my first language).
Thanks,
Limpet

I'm doing coir with a few tablespoons of dry coffee grounds right now on my first try (spawned BRF cakes to bulk in 6 qt shoeboxes the other day) RR says the coffee is really good for shrooms, I'll let everyone know how it goes

yeah, just hydrate and use. boiling it is supposed to help, but it's not required

I'd omit the coffee grinds, it contaminates far too easy, with little to no benefit for cubes

thank you, I'll keep that in mind for my next shoebox. let's hope that the ones I have going are going to turn out alright
it seems like we're in the early days of home mushroom growing, as nothing's nailed down and everything you learn gets overturned a few threads later

The only reason I wouldn't say straight coir for beginners would be because of getting it to field capacity. Most likely you're gonna make it too wet to begin. Having some vermiculite around is a really easy way to find that balance. It doesn't have to be an even mix, you don't necessarily have to follow a 'recipe', you can just add what you need until you reach field capacity.

Thank you all for replie, really enjoy getting ideas from more experienced people. I'm currently growing enoki/tiger sawgill mushrooms, so I am very much looking forward to finding best stable efficient substrate I can use to cut costs.
+1 Footpath, i've a lot of ideas I wish to try but wish to keep things very simple to start with.... though just out of curiosity I have some donated coir which contains 20% perlite and has npk additives (in small quantity). The only thing i'm concerned about is that it has "beneficial microbes"..... is this normal for coir? I was going to use this with another 20% corse vermiculite. Would this be suitable in your experience?

Do you guys just measure water out then add to coir and use it?
I always put in a little extra water and just squeeze each handful to field cap as I go, or maybe over/under depending on the situation.
I could see that being a huge pain in the ass if youβre doing larger scale stuff a lot but for 3 or 4 shoeboxes itβs alright.

been using coir and verm for years. It has worked well. Been thinking about just going straight coir for a while. maybe when I run out of my large verm supply I think I will
