Learning a trade is hands down one of the best things you can do in this day and age to land a good job, without needing to put yourself into debt for life learning the skills. The trade program I took in college had about a 98% employment rate with graduates, and you would pay off your college loans within the first year of employment.

I'm an electrical contractor. I'm not union and never was. I preferred it that way and it has worked out wonderfully. After getting my license I went back to college and got an electronics engineering degree. I then decided to become a contractor instead of engineering work because the money was better and it fits my lifestyle better. It was a good choice so far.

Working trades is for young guys though. If you do it then I would suggest saving as much as possible so you can hire your own guys one day.

Work hard and take pride in your work and you will make a nice living one day.

Just wanted to echo this. The trades are great for certain people, I myself have done my share of flatwork. But like Lophosaurus said, the trades are a young man's game. You can make a ton of money working a lot of hours, but eventually you'll want to transition out of the manual labor. Save as much money as you can (while still living it up a little), and have a plan:  move up to project manager, start your own firm, whatever - just have a plan to eventually transition away from the manual labor.

I guess my hope is to do it till I can transition into something with my degree.

Finish my bachelors and then hopefully take grad courses.

Im 28, im in good shape atm. Try to take care of myself. So I guess i figure i'm still young enough to get some years out in the trade work without killing myself.

Right now trade work is the best option I can see.

Any trade workers on here?

I am considering joining an apprenticeship.

I am considering carpentry as well as electrician.

Was wondering if anyone on here has gone through these programs or is working in the trades and what they think of it.

I have been working as a carpenter helper / laborer and I do kind of enjoy the carpentry work. More so the rough carpentry and less so the finer details. But this company isn't the best, a bit shady, a bit inconsistent.

Thanks for any info

i've done cabinet work but i never really learned how to do it by myself, always needed guidance, it's like i have a learning block problem.  plus with all the medications i'm on, it was kinda dangerous to operate saws and heavy machinery...can't really believve i used to do all that

I’m a farrier (a person that trims or shoes horses) I make anywhere from $70 to $120 an hour. I work part time mostly and make as much as a full time job. There are draw backs. The real money is in show horses. Show horse farriers make about $200+ an hour. Working on show horses is a HUGE pain in the ass. You are constantly asked to to unethical things because it’s more about winning then the health and well being of the animal. If the horse does not win, the vet, trainer and owner will blame you and you get fired. Also it’s very trending, because if somebody new comes to town, all of your clients will drop you to try them. No matter if your work is better or not.

Now I primary work on pet horses, backyard horses and trail horses. I also work on ex show horses that are totally fucked by the voodoo horseshoeing it received during its show career. Most of their owners are concerned about the health of their animals. I don’t work on gaited horse or OTTB (off the track thoroughbred). What I like about my small business is I only take cash, or barter and I ain’t got to pee in a cup.

I feel starting your own business is always a good option too. I dont believe in college. Especially when we can just buy books and learn ourselves. Colleges are 90% opinion. I have a hard time accepting popular opinions for sure. You say you like construction so build your own business. It'll become successful in the same ammount of time it would take to get a degree. A good idea also if you have minor electrical skills you can look into building grow lights for med patients. If you go this path id suggest looking into cree cobs. Just my two cents. Best of luck in youre endeavours!

I want to get my certifications for heavy machinery and find a job doing only that. My current job has me operating heavy equipment sometimes and when I'm running the machines is the only time I don't feel like I'm working. It's just fun. I can honestly see doing that for the rest of my life and not dreading going to work.

We've all heard the saying do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life and less than a year ago I doubted I'd ever find something like that for myself.. because even something like video game testing or some bullshit would get tiring very fast, but nope, that's it. Running heavy equipment. It's like I'm 10 and they're giant Tonka toys. I can do that shit all day and when Mom calls for dinner I'm gonna be screaming "just 10 more minutes!"

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way.
I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today.
Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear.
I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear.

Picking a trade is hard. I want to be a kid forever!

Hell dont we all haha. I worked as a landscaper for some 9 years before I decided to make a change of work. Life sure was easier back then, made decent money was able to get high all day. After beating my body and tearing a few disc's in my back I realized Id never be able to get enough money to start my own company so I started looking into other trades.

Im glad I decided to make the change, hell im only a 2nd yr electrical apprentice but im still quite young. If I keep up working the amount of hrs I am now ill have my e2 by the time im 30. Plan on getting my contractors license; I did go to school and have at least an associates degree so if all else fails I can go back and continue on to do something else if I have to.
