New grower in need of expertise!
    #26412595 - 01/02/20 01:59 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

First time grower here, using a 6qt dub tub setup. WBS and vermiculite to spawn, Pete moss, Verm, hydrated lime and oyster shells+crab shells as casing. So far everything has been going well. Got 3 jars of matazapec at 100%. I spawned one (as a trial run) and set the other two in the fridge for now. My spawn run was perfect, 8 days sitting at 83 degrees, entire tub was white with no contamination. The only thing that worried me was the small puddles on top from dripping condensation. Added the casing layer as evenly as possible 6 days ago (about 1/2” casing throughout). Have another tub sitting loosely on top for gas exchange.
Been misting lightly and fanning 3-4 times a day. The room and tub are sitting at 70 degrees. My questions are:

1. Shouldn’t the mycelium be grown more through the casing by now?

2. Do I wait until the entire casing is close to 100% mycelium before fruiting?

3. How much light should they be getting? I Have them sitting in a shaded room, but they get about 3 hours of dim light through the blinds at sundown.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Been doing quite a bit of research, but research only helps so much when half these sites and forums all have different information!!

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to shoeboxes! They’re the shit

83 is cutting it close to too warm.
The casing doesn’t need to colonize, just keep water and humidity for the myc below it, but over time it will grow into it.

You can skip the spawn run and go to Fruiting immediately, if you have a second tub on top then it’s already getting enough air to fruit.

You should see pins any time I’m kinda surprised you haven’t already.

Light isn’t a huge deal if there’s a window with sun coming in that’s ok.

Also I would avoid any other sites as well as most threads here that are older than 2-3 years. Always check the date. I did the same as you at first reading all the different sites, this is by far the best one.

And fanning is unnecessary, I was super happy to learn that cuz it’s a pain in the ass.

That’s a funky casing recipe, love it.

83F is too hot. If the room is 83, the inside of your sub is at about 88.

You should fruit right away.

If a casing is fully consumed, it stops acting like a casing. Ideally, you don’t want any of it colonized.

They should get at least 12 hours of light. You can put them next to a window or keep a 6500K cfl bulb turned on in the room...or buy a bunch of aquarium strips like my dumb ass just cause it lewks so kewl maaan.

I didn’t see the pics before, looks like it’s knotting so that’s good.

Are those orange chunks crab shells?? I always skipped the shell part.

Did you happen to use a tek from shroomology I think it’s called “Rez effect dub tub” or something like that ?

Thanks for the quick response! Yeah I am too. I read that I should have pins in 5-7 days. Maybe I am getting first signs of pins, I just don’t know what they look like until they get stubby. Rh inside the box stays at 80%. I’m also having a hard time figuring out how much to mist. I usually give it 3-4 sprays out of a mister from about 6” a few times a day. It was at 83 degrees while the bulk substrate was spawning after transferring from jars. Since I added the casing they’ve been around 70. I was thinking maybe I’m not getting pins yet because I have em between 67-70 degrees? From what I understand, lower temps = slower growth. But I’m not too sure how much that would effect it. Also, should I leave a box fan going in that room for air circulation?

Yes the red chunks are the crab shells. I’m following a “6qt dub tub” method on shroomology

I would ease up on misting, that was my problem at first and it is hard to figure out.

If you had pools of water from dripping during the spawn run there should be plenty of water in the sub. My first couple grows I thought it needed to be way wetter than it does. And actually once you get the amount of water the coir needs when you make it dialed in you really won’t need to mist at all, maybe once or twice until the first flush.

Being too wet might slow them down, which is what happened to me. My very first grow is the top pic in my signature it was maz also. I kept it so wet the myc got all weird and thick looking and I thought I ruined it but then all of a sudden it just pinned up.

I bet you’ll see pins by the weekend they come in fast.

Awesome! I’m excited. I’ll ease off on misting them, I think I’m gonna crack the top a little bit and turn a fan on in the room to make sure it’s getting fresh air. If this tub goes well I got two more coming right behind it!

Right on man just keep an eye on it, they can dry out quick with a fan running especially if the top is crooked.

I stopped dubbing them and just put the lid on but only snap one end shut. The humidity in my room is low, like 16% usually but doing the one end thing they get plenty of air but won’t dry out.

You’ll probably have it figured out by the time your third one is done.

Waiting on the first grow sucks I basically lived in the grow room.

I believe I’m starting to see the early pinhead growth. But again I’m not 100% sure. is it gonna look like a yellow/brown mycelium root on top of the knots? And do I change temp, rh or amount of air it gets when pins start to develop? I’ll post a pic when I get home

What variety are you growing? That sounds just like what my PE blobs looked like as “pins”. Just a bunch of white/brown/beige crust, almost like a scab.

And yeah, some people increase FAE once the pinset is in, but if you don’t have a canopy (and the microclimate one creates), you might wanna watch/mist the surface more often.

Matazapecs. That’s a good description. Mine basically looks like a brown/yellow scab on top of the knot, sprouting out creating what looks like a starfish

Usually it’ll look like a knot that stretched out a little bit and has a dark spot on top. They grow so quickly that that stage is short lived. you just check and all of a sudden there’s pins. You’ll know when you see one.

I recommend ditching that elaborate sub. Just go grains to coir or if you have access to cheap vermiculite go coir and verm.

I go one qt of fully colonized grains two 2 qts hydrated coir. Mix it in the shoebox then add 1/4 inch of straight coir on top just to cover the grains. No need to pasteurize just dump hot water on the coir and your good to go.

I'd get my temps down if possible too much heat + too much water = tha funk. I wouldtn't mist unless it needs it. I often go a week or so with no misting if I nail feild capacity. If your needing to mist 3 times a day then you are getting too much FAE imo and run the risk of drying out your sub. It's easy to get overzealous with the mister in your first few grows but if you get it all diled in you won't have to do much at her than spawn and harvest. Good luck I hope you kill it!

Oh yeah, that’s a blobber. I so regret going balls deep with PE...I miss the pretty canopy harvests.

That’s what I always read. Original PE and Mazatapec are the top contenders

Still nothing. I cut down on misting it and fanning, came back from work today and still can’t see any signs of pins. It looks like the mycelium is starting to run through the casing. Any advice?

Just keep it moist with plenty of air and wait.

My maz colonized super fast then when I cased it they seemed to slow down for a while, and then one day there was new fuzzy myc poking out the casing and next thing I knew a huge pinset.

It’ll happen man it’s so hard to wait especially on the very first one
