The official Psilocybe natalensis thread 15

Anyone have experience with this species, can it be grown indoors, substrate type etc.
Ok after reading more and asking about the print it appears we just confused this cube with natalensis what it actually is ( P.cubensis var. Natal super strain) so from the same area just a cube.
EDIT by Land Trout 10/22/2023 I’ve changed the thread title from “Psilocybe natalensis or cubensis var. natal” To The official Psilocybe natalensis thread as it is a better fit for how the thread has evolved. Trout

Hi! I didn't grow it. There's little information about them on internet, but for what I could find, they grow "On fertilised rich soil in pasture: KwaZulu-Natal", so I guess you could cultivate it similarly to a Psilocybe cubensis.

Good luck!

Thanks I recently received a print and couldn't find much on them so I guess I'll try read whatever there is then give it a go I'm sure there's other folks on here who got the same prints in the giveaway so maybe someone with more knowledge will do a grow. Or a few of us do a group grow in a couple weeks I just got it so need to do up some plates and prep.

If they can be done like cubes then hell maybe it will be the shroomery that can grow it out and get it to more ppl in the community domestication of a new species would be a fun project. I think I read it didn't enter the scientific community until 1995 so it's fairly new to being grown the guy I got it from said its his favorite to grow maybe he will pop in with some info.

Those look like cubensis. How have you determined they're Natalensis?

For what I've seen, Ps. natalensis is larger and has smaller caps than Ps. cubensis and it doesn't have veil.

Aka traits that are not unusual for cubes to have from time to time.

The species was described as new to science in 1995 by Jochen Gartz,
Lol 99.95% chance it's not even a new species. This guy and Paul are the absolute kings of bad taxonomy and trying to make new species.
Someone needs to get Alan a sample to put it to rest

Yeah bod I was thinking this last night after seeing pics when I (or anyone that wants) grows them out and gets prints or can send a swab if Alan is up for it I would love to know. In all reality I guess it's possible the prints going around aren't even from the mushrooms they're calling natalensis shit gets mixed up all the time. To find out we probably need a wild sample since they look so much like cubes my guess is it's probably a dif cube variety but whatever we will see when we grow them out.

My spores originated from a vendor here in SA that has them listed as P.cubensis var - NatalSuperStrength(NSS) While a google search has some people listing/posting them as P.natalensis. I believe the original collection (of these spores)possibly came from a collection in the Hillcrest area of Natal- And NOT from the Gartz,Reid,Smith and Eicker collection which was more inland towards the Drakensburg(also in Natal ,South Africa) I cannot however 100% verify all of this. P.cubensis (and Panaeolus cyanescens)are found all along the warmer Eastern side of our county where cows and horses are around.(P. cubensis var Transkei being the other more well known cube variety from SA.)
Id love to see side by side test results of samples from both species-collected in different areas here in SA-and see what the results have to say. More than likely-genetically they are more or less all the same BUT that slight VARIATIONS(phenotypes) of them would occour in them from different factors in different regional areas(colour, size.strength ect...)but also day/night temps, altitude, humidity, soil compositions, grasses ect Much the same like different regional varieties of cannabis but also no different to humans ,animals, birds, plants ect.. But hey... I very may well be wrong... Im always open to what those more in the know have to say and always ready to learn some more.

Ok so what's probably going on also is ppl giving two diff types the same name or nickname I hate when that happens not only is it confusing but makes noobs mistake there dosage just over vendor hype names. Well at any rate we have p.cubensis var. natal super strain so an African cube is still somthing cool for the collection.

Edited the op to reflect that it's apparently a cube from natal not the species listed as natalensis if that's even a separate species itself lol.

I'm getting some crazy overlay on these but from what I've read it's pretty typical and will still fruit. 2 shoeboxes I'm debating scraping one/casing or a portion to see what effect it has. Anyone else fruit these or have overlay like this?

Growth is usually very fast and rhizo on these & while Ive never experienced growth on a tub like yours-just leave them be..this variety is pretty much bullet proof and Im pretty sure youll still get some nice fruits...
