Can’t afford a dehydrator. Oven method question...

Hey guys, I’m at it tonight with the requests for help.
I have a second flush due in about 5 days, so wanted to expirement. I usually fan dry in ambient air for a few days until dry then put in a desiccant chamber for a couple more days, then freeze in sealed containers with desiccant sachets.
But I’ve heard that this:
- doesn’t get the mushrooms 100% cracker dry
- loses more potency due to the amount of time exposed to air
So rather than splash out £60 on a dehydrator, I want to try oven drying.
I have heard that 2 hours on the top shelf at 160-180 degF with a fan on them will get them cracker dry.
That is what I plan to do, but firstly two questions:
- why do you need the fan?
- why is the oven door left open? Surely door shut and lower temperature?
Many thanks for your responses, shroomery DJ Ed

It’s the moving air that causes dehydration, the heat just helps things along. Or more exactly the heat increases the holding capacity of the air so it can absorb more evaporating water, while warming the fruits also helps this along, it’s the lower humidty air being moved across Much higher humidty mushroom that causes it to dehydrate.
In an oven setup you are wanting the fan to be blowing across or above the hot elements to heat the air. In fact if you have one, a hair dryer is a better option.

Ah, light bulb moment. So we have a fan-assisted oven. I guess with that, keep the door closed and check on the mushrooms often........

I implore you to get a dehydrator. It is very much worth the investment. Even the $30 ones on amazon will work. It's not like you are making jerky in these

And even if you were making jerky, the $30 ones will work fine. The fancier functions of the more expensive models include on/off switches, timers, and variable temperature settings. I use mine to make chicken jerky for the dogs. They love it, and it helped me justify the expense.

Personally, right now i'm using a collapsible drying/cure rack. It does what it needs to do for roughly 15-20 bucks (it's been awhile since the purchase for it.) I would recommend it as an alternative.
But, the oven method, is just basically getting your oven to lowest temp and keeping constant airflow to help lock in potency, i've tried it, but didn't receive the results I was looking for.

I recommend using the Lamp Method. Its like sun drying but artificially. It involved a office lamp, an incandescent bulb 60W or more and some tin foil.
Lay tin foil down, place shrooms on top and point lamp with incandescent bulb at the shrooms for 12-24 hours. The light and heat of the bulb will dry the shrooms completely.

Thank you rido, Corundum, I am seriously tempted, given the overwhelming advice to get a dehydrator. The other snippet I didn’t mention was that my last harvest was about two years ago. I got much fruit from my first successful monotub grow that I’ve been living off the fruits now for over two years. I don’t seem to have done that well this time round (550g wet off first flush - think it was 3x that last time round!). But all the same, I’m just thinking £60 for something that may only be used once every couple of years.....
Still, if it was to save potency it would be worth it.

You know what , LogicaL Chaos, I have never even considered that. That to me sounds safer than using the oven by a long way. I think I’ll give the oven a miss (my oven is in Celsius not Fahrenheit) so the temperature scale is much narrower than for degF, making me even more nervous (160 -180 F is about 70 -80 C).
Plenty of food for thought, thank you.

Yeah, try it out. It works great.
Ive tried to "dry" shrooms in the oven, but every time I tried, the shrooms "melted". With the lamp technique, never had an issue.

Shame on me! Just checked my desiccant chamber; it was at 40% RH last night, sealed in a tub, inside a sealed bin liner. Checked again this morning expecting to see about 15% RH, but it was reading 43% 😱
Looks like my desiccant gel beads have been recharged once too often so now they’re actually adding moisture to the mushrooms not removing it. So panicking, I’ve just ordered a dehydrator from Amazon.
I feel almost embarrassed, but reckon from all the feedback that my investment will be worth it. If it saves as much potency as I believe it will, then I’ll recoup the costs from a single flush........
And I can make beef jerky for my dogs 👊🏻
Thanks for all your advice, very much appreciated. DJ Ed

Dried fruit is pretty awesome in the dehydrator too. I like doing apples sprinkled with a little cinnamon and bananas

I’ve already justified the cost to my wife with all the healthy snacks il be able to make. I fancy a bit of apple and banana, and reckon the dogs will love some jerky 👊🏻

Good shout, LogicaL Chaos. My mushroom knife turned up yesterday, ready for slicing my fruits. I had to show ID to the Amazon delivery driver..........had to tell him its not a gang-knife! DJ Ed

Have I just messed up, folks?
Just sliced up some mushrooms to dry in the dehydrator, and this happened:

Isn’t blue a sign of oxidation, and does that mean by slicing you’re losing loads of potency? Should I put whole mushrooms in the dehydrator in future?
Thanks for your answers, DJ Ed

It's just bruising. You can put them in whole next time but I don't think it matters much, they'll dry quicker sliced like that though
