The crab fishing Scandoe Rose was just starting the crab season this year, when for whatever reason had to abandon ship. 2 crew members made onto a life raft but the remaining 5 are missing and presumed dead. "The decision to suspend an active search and rescue is never an easy one" A chilling reminder of what could go wrong as I prepared to sail to Dutch Harbor for the start of A season this year.
The scandie rose parked at the Seattle shipyard on pier 90

Yeah I saw a little bit about this.
One of the guys who survived made appearances on Deadliest Catch I think.
Anyhow, terrible news. It's an extremely dangerous way to make a living, obviously. Those waters that they make their living in are so incredibly volatile.

Even inside those emerson suits that water is damn cold. Not sure how it happened, but we practice abandon ship drills at the start of every trip. Our boat is much bigger though. Some of these crab boats are old. I just watched the Baranofe pull up and offload it cargo a few weeks ago. It's amazing how some of these boats are even still floating

Anything could've happened. I think most likely they were overcome by choppy seas. Those boats go into waters I can quiet understand. it seems they get tossed easier and some of them were built in the 1970s . It's not surprising something like this could happen. These boats are privately maintained meaning they don't always follow proper protocol for abandoning ship and don't practice it ither. Their a family own private boat who sub contracts to a company. The boat is not maintained to safety regulations like a company would
