New to Mushroom Picking
    #26415095 - 01/03/20 08:10 PM (4 years, 26 days ago)

Hey there, first of all I'm new to this site and new to mushrooms in general so if this is the wrong spot to post please redirect me to the proper one.

I have a couple of questions regarding mushroom hunting to make sure I don't ruin any patches or do something really stupid. I haven't found any straight answers to these questions yet, and they're too specific to google so I hope you guys can help.

- How many seasons does mycelium grow mushrooms? If I saw a patch of mushrooms, assuming no one harmed it, would it still be in the same spot, still making mushrooms a few years later?

- Is it possible to "plant" a mushroom? I saw someone claim that you can tear a mushroom from the mycelium, keeping the root-like bits attached, and plant it in the same substrate to make a new patch grow. They also said that you could spray the top of the mushie with water to make it drop more spores.

- Do mushrooms vary in shape depending on the region, or just randomly? For example, if I found some wavy capped subs, should I assume the area will mostly have wavy capped subs?

- Is there anything a first timer should know about picking mushrooms that isn't "don't eat if you aren't sure" and "don't fuck up the patch"?

Thanks guys, I appreciate it!

They will continue to grow until they eat all the nutrients, season after season.

Hello there! :mushroom2:

- Usually only one season. But if one seasons is like another (like Winter that is like Spring) you will have fruits in another season. Just depends on the climate/weather.

- Mushrooms use spores to germinate/create mycelium. Also pieces of mycelium can be used to spread a species around. Usually people will take the mushroom stem butt (covered in mycelium) and bury it in the substrate that it requires (like wood chips or a cow pie). It can be pretty effective. But a better way is to take it home and try to cultivate it at home under your own supervision. Spraying the top of the mushroom may trigger it to sporulate more from the water drying off the cap.

- Theres slight variations in mushroom phenotypes (physical characteristics), but for the most part, they look all the same.

- Always double-check any species you think are active on the Shroomery. Post clear photos and post all info related to the shroom.

Welcome to the Shroomery! :mushroom:

It depends on the species. Many mycorrhizal species, like chanterelles, will stick to the same host tree for years and decades
as long as the tree and its surroundings are healthy. Most saprobic species will stick around only as long as they have something
to eat - like Doc9151 stated above.

Some species are also extremely selective with regards to fruiting conditions, and they will remain vegetative until the right
conditions occur, even if there are years between. In general, mushroom mycelium is hardy and can survive pretty harsh
conditions. Some even make "depots" of living tissue, so-called sclerotia that may lay dormant for long periods of time.
