Keen observers of the skies may have noticed over the past month a change in the constellation Orion. The once bright red giant star Betelgeuse is disappearing. Since October it has lost 60% of its brightness. Betelgeuse is a variable star, but this decrease is unprecedented. We know that the star has almost run out of fuel, and there is a small chance this dimming means the star has now run out of fissionable material and is collapsing. If this is the case, it may be on the verge of going super nova. If this happens it will become the brightest object in the sky except for the sun. The explosion will last for months and be visible day and night.

There's no indication that Betelgeuse is going to explode anytime soon.  And stars don't do fission.  Nor does that image actually suggest that there's anything lumpy about its photosphere. The fact that it's dimming doesn't mean that it's collapsing either.  If anything it means that it's probably expanded (which would be a necessary step in a type-II supernova), but not enough that the material in it is going to bounce off of itself when it starts to collapse/contract again

Do you want me to share some actual literature on the topic so that you can bitch about how obtuse I'm being, with my educational materials?

Got anything that shows how a 102020 supernova is more likely? Is there more of a chance of it happening in 100,000 years, or tomorrow?
Really asking.

Genuinely don't know.  Seems like it would pretty much be a shot in the dark to be totally honest (aside from the fact that people can sort of observe it now and make some pretty well educated guesses what's going on inside of it).  I don't think that there's a concrete prediction about when Betelgeuse would produce a supernova.  There's just a recognition that it's entered a phase of its stellar life cycle where it'll eventually collapse in on itself with such a great energy that its layers literally bounce off of each other.

If you've ever seen that astroblaster toy then it's actually a really similar principle (and that toy was invented by the guy who figured out that that's what was happening).  Basically the star expands way beyond any size that could be maintained by its own internal pressure, it starts to collapse, there isn't enough heat from fusion to stop it from collapsing and all of the layers of material in the star just sort of ricochet off of each other.  More momentum is transferred to the outer layers than the inner ones (and is sort of transferred to the outer layer from the inner layers), so they tend to go flying off into space with some ridiculous amount of energy.

Don’t they have the best telescope location on Hawaii?

Or maybe they were going to but the natives didn’t want them fucking up the mountains...  something like that.  Either way, yes the sky there is legendary.

They want to build a thirty meter telescope Mauna Kea but some local politicians are playing it up into some sort of a desecration of a holy site.  Thing is that the structure isn't going to be permanent.  The entire thing was basically designed to not leave a trace, but it plays pretty well to voters if you can convince them that some forces of technological progress are trying to rob them of their way of life.

Yup Mauna Kea has Keck is currently the biggest optical ground telescope. They want to build a couple HUGE telescope but the Native Hawaiians are rising up againist it. Sacred land and all that. Gotta respect the Aina braddah!

Heres some photos at the entrance of Mauna Kea access road:
