Not necessarily, there are some verified hybrids that don’t look anything like natal.

Ok, good to know, I'm still excited to try these ones.

Slow growing nats update. Notes: These are low spore natalensis. Spawned 12/1. Big blue section on the stem becoming more pronounced.

My shoebox of Nats has a crazy amount of overlay. It is about an inch thick in some places. I can see a few pins trying to force their way up through the mycelium, but will they be able to poke through the really thick parts? Is there any way to salvage this flush by adding a late casing of CV, or do I just let it ride and hope for the best?
Spawned 1/24. 1 myco quart of spawn mixed 1:2.5 with CV, added about another half quart top layer. Compressed and sprayed heavily. Is the top layer causing all this? I thought it was supposed to help. Sorry for all the questions! First time growing nats.

The concensus on overly is that it is probably genetics. Is it an isolate or ms? I have seen people scrape it but it doesn't usually turn out well. I would leave it alone and see what happens. You might want to go back to spore or try to source new genetics. I would definitely try to clone one of those pins pushing through first though. Good luck

Just put my first Nat spores on agar, excited to see what she’s got in store for me.

This is my first successful Nat grow. Everything else I’ve ran was nothing but overlay and metabolites. Going to pull them tomorrow and hopfully give them a try this weekend.

Awesome, I bet it’ll be worth the wait. Please report back with your findings!
Started reading this thread from the beginning a while back and after getting a couple hundred pages in I’m just thinking holy shit, Nats have so much to offer! Whether that’s through the chase for a good culture or the experiences the fruits bring it seems like quite the gem

First three are pictures of a monotub that had a few flushes and stopped yielding well, so as an experiment I added 1.5q of spawn sandwitched between compressed layers of coir. Started pinning today.
Last one grew and pinned in almost no light. Yielded 58 grams dry second flush.

This was a MS grow. All of mine have been so far. I'm just nervous because I spawned another shoebox of these same genetics a few days ago. Different agar plates but those were a few transfers out from the same germ plate. So fingers crossed lol.
Love the idea of trying to take a clone from one of the little guys that does make it thru, though! Thanks for the tip.

One of the things I read here and there is that using a thin (1/8 inch) pasteurized casing layer of 50/50 + some perlite for fluff, hydrated with water in a mix of 6 grams hydrated lime per gallon of water, then the hydrated casing mix is buffered with 3% calcium carbonate by wet weight goes a long way towards signaling the myc that they are out of food AND down modulating the overlay tendency. I cased once I saw my bulk substrate at full colonization across the top of the sub. I did this for my tubs and none of them have overlayed. As well, I've heard that the optimal spawn to bulk ratio is 1:4. That's the spawn ratio I used. My bulk is pasteurized h-manure:verm:coir:ChoppedWheatStraw:.5partPerlite hydrated with that same water recipe. Even so ..... genetics in ANY grow is *THE PRIMARY* factor in outcomes.

Hey if you have a tub, like that one, and you take a biopsy, or just cut some mycelium off and put it on agar, transfer till clean, will the mycelium off that final agar plate always make overlay just like the original tub?

Most probably yes. Then again, even if it didn't, why would you risk it? Isn't it better to just go back to spores?
